Great pancakes in Brooklyn

Thanks for the clarification. I am local and I was sort of dragged there by, indeed, visiting tourists who'd read about Tom's. I'm not a pancake person and actually, neither were my visitors.

Lots of word of mouth on Tom's in Prospect Hts.
I've only been there once and only had a standard egg special breakfast that was fine. At worst it is a good old school neighborhood diner. But like I said, word of mouth is strong.

Corned Beef hash...from a can. Preferred brands?

Then there's hope! Until it disappeared, it was always on the shelves of my NY supermarkets & bodegas--not sporadic. I'd never thought of it as regional. Something must have changed.

Are you saying that Broadcast still exists? I grew up on it (born in '53) in NY, I consider it the best canned CBH, and I thought it was no more as of around 8 years ago. You've seen it?

The Outer Boroughs: great beer choices.

Pure satire. Not good satire but satire, nonetheless.

Whole Foods opening in Brooklyn

I'm adding this for the purpose of clarifying my tone: I have no particular antipathy to WF. I'm simply well enough served by other options. And it is not conveniently located for me. No hostility to WF was intended.
The next item, on the other hand, was edited for maximum civility.

A) I do not care about Whole Foods
B) I care significantly less about your 'recommendation'. What on earth gives you the idea that people are seeking your guidance?

M. Wells Steakhouse

Any idea what "Topnecks by the Bottle" means on the raw bar menu? I'm coming up blank.

pastrami in bay ridge?

As long as this ancient discussion is back on the board it wouldn't hurt to update it with the mention of David's Brisket House at 7721 5th Ave.

Shaking my head.

Seeking Flushing Roosevelt/Prince Guidance

Thank you. We are a party of 3. Even if a private room were a viable option, it does not interest us. After discussion we have decided on Imperial Palace, armed with a handful of plan B's.

Old school usage. Street hustle bustle.

Seeking Flushing Roosevelt/Prince Guidance

Thank you for the responses. I've done a bunch of reading and unquestionably, Imperial is a strong contender. I welcome more thoughts.
And btw, your point, swannee, is taken. Perhaps I overstated the level of serenity I was seeking or perhaps I was seeking unrealistic tranquility. I guess what I hope for is a place several steps up from a combat zone where people say "who cares! The food is amazing!"

Seeking Flushing Roosevelt/Prince Guidance

I had forgotten this one. I just went and brought up Lau's splendid review from 3/12. Looks like a strong choice.
I'd love if you could elaborate on your recommendation. If not, thanks for the suggestion.

Seeking Flushing Roosevelt/Prince Guidance

I am aware of the wealth of CH reporting on the several Chinese places in this area. Here's my situation:

Friends are in town for one night at a hotel. I was having a hard time coming up with a meeting place to dine & visit w/ them. Then they told me that a) they were totally committed to good/exciting food and b) they were staying at Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel (this is, like, right at Prince/Main/Roosevelt)......problem solved, I think.

I have never been to this area or to any of the talked about places like Spicy & Tasty, Fu Run, Szechuan Gourmet and Little Pepper.

Can I get guidance please. I need a place that will provide pleasant, unrushed, comfortable, non-mayhem dining. This is first & foremost a social occasion with friends I have not seen in 15 years. Can any of these places (or any other suggestions in the area) provide this sort of atmosphere along with good food? FWIW we will be dining on a Friday at 7.

Thanks in advance.

E Taverna, lovely neighborhood Greek restaurant in Astoria: pile up the small plates

Appreciating this thread. This might be a good solution for a mid-point-located place to meet some friends next week.
Could you give me an idea about parking in the area?

Where to buy Mortodella

Google pulls up a specific mention of Meat Hook's mortadella NOT being too salty. Esposito's (Court St, Bklyn) house-makes a lot of really good stuff but their mort. might actually be Italian import. It has been way too long since I tasted it so I can't comment on it (other than that I've never had anything bad there).

What happened to the Outer Boroughs board?

Been down for quite some time. The only reason I did not report it here is that the error message specifically says
" The CHOW team has been notified and will check it out."

If that message is not accurate, someone might want to reconsider that auto-response.

Fish share/CSF/ fish CSA

I'm assuming that you have already found online info and don't need this:

http://mermaidsgardennyc.com/csf/

But I thank you for raising the subject--I had not been aware of the existence of fish CSAs. I'd also be very interested in feedback responses from participants.
My only problem is that the pickup time is not consistently convenient for me. Probably rules this out.

Peasant Lard (Greenpoint)

Funny--I googled "bigos", being unfamiliar with this and after a wiki entry, the first item is a 2007 Chowhound 'Home Cooking' entry starting "A few weeks ago, or is it months, Silverjay asked me to post my mother's recipe for Bigos...."
And now I know what bigos is.

Juliana's Pizza

Short line, 10 minute wait at 2:30 Sat (long line at Grimaldi), warm and gracious greeting/seating by....Juliana?....Mrs. Grimaldi. Just one lg. pie for 3 because we had dinner plans later. Margherita pie with 1/2 sausage (thanks for the sausage recommendation). Very pleased (out of town guests VERY pleased). Agree with the assessment--not life changing but really good. No negatives. Even longer line a Grimaldis when we hit the street.
Annie Hall moment---upon overhearing me telling my guests the back story, Mrs. G took the time to tell the REAL story. As I told my guests later, it was pretty much exactly the story I was telling them but I dug the scenario of the expert coming out of the wings to set the record straight, even if it already was (and she was perfectly charming--no sotto voce 'you jerk' implied).

Restaurants serving shad roe in Brooklyn?

re: your initial post---expect subtlety. It won't hit you over the head with awesomeness. I like roe sacs in general a lot but you need to approach it more from a tofu direction of deliciousness than from the direction of a high-sensory textural and flavor experience.

I hadn't realized that about the Hudson shad. Thought it was a healthy population (but, as I look it up I see that it is not).

Shad roe at Fish Tales, Brooklyn today ($14/pair sort of shocked me but it's been a while...I've lost track).

Butcher Merguez Brooklyn

Good info.
For the record, I am a big fan of Paisanos on Smith but their merguez doesn't do much for me. Not bad. Just meh.

Great smoked salmon in brooklyn?

I have always been happy with Garden Of Eden's hand sliced fish (Montague St) Scottish, Irish, Norwegian or local (Acme, presumably). Shelsky's on Smith St. has nice fish. Pricey.

Thanksgiving near Mt. Vernon

Your post caught my attention because MV is my home town (haven't lived there in over 40 years) and because I believe the location of your folks is the former site of the synagogue of my bar mitzvah (47 years ago). Just moved my 90 y.o. dad out of his MV home this year. Rough story about your folks & Sandy. Sorry for their troubles. I regret that I can't help with any suggestions but I hope you get some good help here (probably on the NYS board). Good luck.
