Nathans Coney Island

I have not been to Nathans in a very long time. I do, very occasionally, buy Nathans dogs at the supermarket and it is the skinless dogs that I buy (because it is what I find). They used to be my favorite packaged dogs, more flavorful than others. Recently I was disappointed to find that they seem quite generic. It is my observation that this SPECIFIC product has been changed and is no longer worth seeking out as a special hot dog.
I have no experience of either the retail dog in casing or the dogs being served at Coney.

stores that sell live blue crabs in Brooklyn?

Carroll Gardens Fish Market at Court St. & President has carried them. No idea if they still do.

Steaming--can you flavor things?

I'll accept this with a smile. My mind is completely open. I will certainly try this!

Steaming--can you flavor things?

I won't touch the science part of this. No clue.

When I steam something without a plate or bowl, the steamer water becomes infused -- artichoke water is quite green, shrimp water was orange. But I have no interest in using this water. With due deference to Ms. Kamman, I'm thinking that my question is pretty much answered. Steamer water is not an effective means of flavoring. Most of my more serious steaming is stuff like fish which will have plenty of ginger & scallion & wine et al, over & under. The potential of the steam itself is too subtle for most anything that I would be likely to undertake.

I welcome further thoughts but I'm pretty well satisfied.

Steaming--can you flavor things?

No doubt.
I guess the simple question is, can steam carry flavor? If so, I'd love to hear ideas of things that can lend steaming flavor and things that can benefit from steaming flavor.

Steaming--can you flavor things?

That's so funny---while I was writing this, I had a couple of artichokes steaming. My question was more of an idle thought as I am content with the 'chokes steamed in water. But I WAS wondering.

Steaming--can you flavor things?

I'm using a steel steamer -- a deep pot with a perforated 'basket' that sits atop with a glass lid on top of the whole rig.
Unlike something like mussels steamed in wine where the mussels actually sit in a small amount of wine & garlic etc. and give up their juices and make a sauce, are there any actual flavoring/infusing techniques when steaming in a basket above the liquid?

With a basket-steamer rig, I am thinking that anything other than simple water steaming is a too-subtle waste.
Am I wrong?

Morgan's BBQ in Prospect Heights

As big as that fire was (5 alarm) I had just assumed the worst for Morgan's. I sure hope they are indeed not totaled.

Williamsburg, BK- the hipster diaries

My scientific observation is that exactly 2/3 of the people identifying other people as hipsters are merely aging people unhappy about younger people playing on their lawns.

Where can I buy live cockles near Park Slope?

I have indeed seen them at Fish Tales but I could not say whether it is reliable, stock, item. Call ahead.

D'Amico gone?

I was going nuts on another site (mistakenly), trying to find this post so that I could make the same report (from a yesterday walk-by too). I popped my head in, asked 'you're still here?" and she laughed and said "yes, we are still here". Much rearrangement, inside.

Planning Philly chefs road trip to Brooklyn

I suggest that you substitute Juliana's for Grimaldi's. Juliana's is owned by the original Grimaldi (and is in the location of the original Grimaldi's). He sold the business and the name, watched it go downhill (a little or a lot, depending on who is telling it) and reacquired the location and picked up where he'd left off. The current Grimaldi's moved over, next door. The tour books have Grimaldi's permanently listed but.....

disclaimer---it has been very many years since I've had Grimaldi's and I don't know their current quality. My last Juliana's, not as long ago, was excellent.

Needless to say, do your due diligence re: Monday hours.

Brooklyn Pizza around Barclays

Let me walk that back---I should have said NOLA rather than Cajun.
I had originally read that this was a collaboration but I'm not sure if that's the case or if it is 100% Sugarfreak:

Brooklyn Pizza around Barclays

The odd thing about the Krescendo situation is that the website shows the old menu. Their reopening is supposed to be a joint venture featuring a revamped cajun-heavy concept. Last time I noticed them, last week, they were still papered over.
I cannot explain the recent Yelp entry unless it's just one more indication that Yelp blows. But bottom line is....due diligence before making that a destination.

Embarrassing question

NYC consists of five boroughs. Manhattan is one borough. The other four are the outer boroughs.
Long Island is not a borough, inner or outer.

Great pancakes in Brooklyn

Thanks for the clarification. I am local and I was sort of dragged there by, indeed, visiting tourists who'd read about Tom's. I'm not a pancake person and actually, neither were my visitors.

Great pancakes in Brooklyn

Lots of word of mouth on Tom's in Prospect Hts.
I've only been there once and only had a standard egg special breakfast that was fine. At worst it is a good old school neighborhood diner. But like I said, word of mouth is strong.

Corned Beef hash...from a can. Preferred brands?

Then there's hope! Until it disappeared, it was always on the shelves of my NY supermarkets & bodegas--not sporadic. I'd never thought of it as regional. Something must have changed.

Are you saying that Broadcast still exists? I grew up on it (born in '53) in NY, I consider it the best canned CBH, and I thought it was no more as of around 8 years ago. You've seen it?

Whole Foods opening in Brooklyn

I'm adding this for the purpose of clarifying my tone: I have no particular antipathy to WF. I'm simply well enough served by other options. And it is not conveniently located for me. No hostility to WF was intended.
The next item, on the other hand, was edited for maximum civility.

A) I do not care about Whole Foods
B) I care significantly less about your 'recommendation'. What on earth gives you the idea that people are seeking your guidance?

Seeking Flushing Roosevelt/Prince Guidance

Thank you. We are a party of 3. Even if a private room were a viable option, it does not interest us. After discussion we have decided on Imperial Palace, armed with a handful of plan B's.
