Catania - Ca-put?
I don't know if it's still up but for a while there was another sign in the window advertising a chef for hire. Although that could have several meanings it didn't look too good in conjunction with the 'closed for vacation' sign.
Soft shell crab sightings?
I recognize that there are two discussions here---who is serving them and who is selling them (retail). Today (Friday 5/4) there are medium/large shells at the Carrol Garden fish store 3/$10. Caveat--alive but just barely. I don't know what difference, if any, there is in lively vs. not very lively crabs. I personally differentiate between dead and alive. In between still qualifies as alive. I invite opinions on this. Anyway, dinner is still some hours away.
Soft shell crab sightings?
I pan-fried a couple today that I got from Fish Tales. Still $6/per for big crabs. Made a simple beer batter and fried 'em crispy & made sandwiches with greens & home made sriracha tartar sauce. In retrospect I should have respected their delicate nature a bit more--the texture was wonderful but their flavor was a bit overwhelmed.
Dinner open Sunday near Roulette (Atlantic betw 3rd and Nevins)?
I like Bedouin Tent a lot, corner Atlantic & Bond, if something this casual suits you. Nothing to rock your world but good predictable middle east with fresh baked pita.

Whoa--I totally missed that the story kept on writing itself. Thought it was over, done & in the books. Thanks for the info.

In the actual area, Fascati's on Henry St. is a good slice place. Not outstandingly special but good neighborhood pizza.
This

with its very limited hours was reviewed on this board a while ago.
And out of the immediate Dumbo area there are a number of whole pie options including Sottocasa and Lucali . And of course a lot more---this is Brooklyn.

Grimaldi Pizza Brooklyn NY
The old location is being taken over by the original owner, Patsy Grimaldi. It will be called Juliana. It retains the coal oven which can only run via grandfathering laws which would be null/void if moved. Grimaldi's is open in its new location, I believe. While I try to be immune to the hype machine, there is no doubt in my mind that the difference between exceptional pizza years ago from Grimaldi's nee Patsy's and the last number of years of poor-to-good inconsistent pizza is the 'new' owners' understanding that the quality of the product seemed have little affect on the daily lines of tourists.
I do not know the latest time projection for the opening of Juliana.
Japanese Restaurants in Park Slope
I've taken delivery primarily from Koto for the last few years. Several dozen times. I was not happy with a couple of deliveries from Taro at the time. At first Koto was quite exceptional. Really special. Now it is only good. Pretty consistent. It's on Seamless which is nice. I am ready to try someone else just to try to recapture some of that enthusiasm I'd had with Koto. I'm talking mainly about Sushi. And FWIW, I don't know who would possibly think that the subject here was "Japanese owned restaurants."
David's Brisket House: Renovation or Out of Business?
Quick side question: do they sell meat retail, by the lb?
Sottocasa - Neapolitan Pizza in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn
I'm a bit slow on these things...just tried them for the first time. Had a delicious prosciutto pizza delivered. I will NEVER evaluate pizza that has traveled without recognizing that it would be several notches better fresh at a table in house. This was just a little underdone--it would have traveled better with another minute in the oven. But it was so very tasty.
I had wondered, and just for information since it's not mentioned anywhere---the pie is about 11 1/2".
where to buy Italian Double 00 flour?
I'm glad you reported back about Mastellone. Having no idea of pricing I'd been contemplating ordering some from King Arthur @ $8 for 3 lbs. It's out of stock anyway so that saved me.
Clinton HIll Pickles. Old Gus's from the LES
I am legally changing my name to Pickles. I demand that all of them cease and desist using my name in their brands.
I do now recall that story of how they had the right to keep the name & signage as long as they stayed in place but upon moving it all evaporated.
Clinton HIll Pickles. Old Gus's from the LES
FWIW, I was browsing some Seamless spots and found that Shelsky's (on Smith) sells a quart of Guss's pickles for $6. I don't recall who ended up with the rights to the name "Guss" but I do recall that it was a contentious story.

Carroll Gardens Fish Store--Brooklyn
If you mean yellow fin tuna, Fish Tales has frozen blocks of it (or used to). Yellow tail, I don't believe I've ever seen around here. Actually I've been meaning to stop by to ask if they will be carrying the NY State farmed hamachi that the NYTimes wrote about.

Downtown Atlantic - What happened?
I have no info or back story but it has been closed since the summer. At first there was the "closed for renovations" sign but it became obvious that nothing was happening. Why do people do that? Months ago I thought I'd seen signs that they were still baking in the cellar but I'm not at all certain.
Buschenschank in Carroll Gardens
Was going to congratulate the neighborhood for finally emerging from the eyesore of the OTB after walking by yesterday. But after reading the blog...maybe not so much...
Monkfish Liver
Great job. I never have the discipline to organize myself to do things "two ways" or more. I love the idea of it. I've not returned to monkfish liver since the original posting. Next time it presents itself to me at the market I'll give it some thought.
Fleetwood Diner Coming Soon! Here we go again.
Before moving my dad out of MV last month, we 'd had several nice lunches at Maggie's but my 90 y.o. dad could never wrap his head around their prices (not unreasonable to me). The Athena was a go-to spot for him years ago and we always walked by the deserted spot & commented on how someone could blow it as bad as the Windmill folks seemed to have done. So he would be one vote for a resurrected straight-up Greek diner type breakfast/lunch. Which does them not a bit of good since he has moved out of state and isn't getting any younger. Best of luck to them.
Best Brooklyn Frozen Dumplings?
It's been a while since I browsed the freezer at Key. I looked today and finally found the Eton dumplings not in the freezer but in a fridge case around the produce section. At $5 for 6 smallish dumplings I passed.
Unhappy thing I'd nearly forgotten to post re: Luscious Food (PS)
I don't know what your problem is. Quote: "We will all do things our own way". I described how I handled my situation.
Unhappy thing I'd nearly forgotten to post re: Luscious Food (PS)
We will all do things our own way---I would not have spent more than 3 minutes on the issue, myself. The one time an item was missing from a Seamless order I called the restaurant, got confusion on the phone, got put on hold, got hung up on. End of that strategy. I emailed Seamless, told them I could not get customer service from the restaurant and needed to get credit for the item. They said they'd get back to me, they got back to me and I received the credit.
Stuff happens. But as the person footing the bill for the system, I will let the people who made the mistake and the people who run the system that allowed the mistake to happen while billing me, to use their resources to straighten out the problem. Of course none of this smooths over the disappointment if you were really counting on a food item but like I said, calling, explaining, arguing, dealing with jerks....no thanks. Dear Seamless. Here's the screw up. Fix it please.
Salumi in Brooklyn - best place/best prices?
If you have the time to shop around, let me add Garden Of Eden on Montague to the list. I'm not a huge fan of the store but they are a decent source for certain items. They have some selection of meats and pates with occasional specials.. Maybe someone else can comment on quality--I'm not experienced enough with high end stuff to compare.

Carroll Gardens Fish Store--Brooklyn
They used to have a lobster tank but they ditched that. Just as well---it wasn't very robust. They have a lot of frozen stuff & some sushi---that is of zero interest to me, considering the number of adequate to good sushi sources around. But no, nothing comes to mind to recommend them as a destination. I'm also at Atlantic so the only time I get down toward Carroll St. is if I'm driving by or if I'm down in that direction for other reasons. I guess the point of the post was that if you do happen to be down that way, they are a good option that is not necessarily second tier.
Carroll Gardens Fish Store--Brooklyn
Just wanted to show some respect to the Carroll Gardens Fish Market on Court Street next to Esposito's Pork. I do most of my fish shopping at Fish Tales but over the years I've always dug this other shop, somewhat out of my way, even when it was darker, older and less glam, back in the 90's. It is now totally bright, modern and more appealing. It smells impeccable and I think it actually has a wider selection than FT. Might not even be cheaper than FT anymore. I am not interested in drumming up a competition, just in acknowledging this place as more than just a compromise alternative. It's still enough out of my way that I don't get there often but just a heads-up to anyone who remembers this from dingier days gone by--you may be pleasantly surprised.
btw--I just picked up some 7 count Jumbo Shrimp. 7. Saddle-worthy. They also have stuff like baby octopus and squid tentacles, sorts of stuff I don't find at FT.
Total respect to Fish Tales which remains my local, go-to place--nothing negative here.

Kulushkat: falafel in Park Slope
Very nice. I hope to graze my way through the menu but I had to start at the beginning with a classic falafel sandwich.
I'm not sure if there are are any component choices offered--I was not offered any--and I do miss a fixings bar. I wolfed this down without a lot of analysis but between the ample amounts of excellent falafel, the bread and..was there bulgur in the salad?--a chopped salad with nice texture--the mouthfuls were pretty bready/grainy. I ate this at home and I doused it liberally with a vinegary hot sauce which really cut nicely. So pickled veggie fixings would be welcome to round out the sandwich.
Location, btw, is two doors down from the old Taro.
I'll be back.
