Trattoria de Lepri (Ellington, CT) Why do you tease us so?
First the positives...
the food is delicious, inventive and expertly prepared. The surroundings are attractive and cozy and the staff accommodating and personable.
Now the negatives...
No reservations are accepted. They open at 5. We arrived on a Saturday at 5:15 to an hour wait. ( This is the second time we arrived early to be confronted with an hour's wait)
It is simply not possible to plan an evening around dinner there. I realize they don't "need " to accept reservations...no restaurant needs to. The opportunity to make and confirm a reservation is an act of respect for the time of one's patrons.
If we could make reservations we would dine there regularly with friends. The current policy leaves as many disappointed walkaways as delighted diners.
1 night in/near Newport, RI
Sparks on Broadway. Creative , eclectic, excellent quality. By no means run of the mill-more hip than fancy. Tuna tartare pizza, crab succotash, fried oysters with chipotle aoli- you can't go wrong
Worst restaurant experience ever!!
I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I paid the tab, however I've been kicking myself about it ever since.
Worst restaurant experience ever!!
Last year my husband and I ate at Alici's in Brattleboro on our way home from spectacular eating in Montreal. The dinner at Alici's was every bit as good and inventive as those in Montreal. So this year we tried to repeat the experience. Well... it started out fine, but when my entree arrived, a special, striped bass in a hibiscus sauce, etc., the trouble began. The first couple of bites were fine if unspectacular, but then I couldn't even manage to cut the rest of it. I think there was some tough membrane or something. I asked the waiter to send it back and he assured me they'd fix it since the chef was also the owner. About five minutes later the waiter came back with the fish telling us that the chef insisted that the fish was fresh. We told the waiter that freshness wasn't the issue, it was too tough to even cut and we wanted to see the chef. He left the fish on the table and said the chef would be out to discuss the matter with us himself. Fifiteen minutes later, after my husband finished his dinner there was still no sign of the chef and the dish remained on the table. We asked the waiter to take it away and the waiter said he would see what he could do about adjustinng the bill, meanwhile there was no attempt to remedy the situation; the chef nor any other representative of the restaurant ever spoke to us about our disatisfaction. When the bill came , there was no adjustment made to reflect the inedible main course, no apology made, no attempt of any kind to satisfy an obviously upset diner. This was the worst restaurant experience ever!!!
