Do you know of great weekly specials which a restaurant runs on a particular day of the week?

just had the patty melt last week and loved it. More precisely, had it twice; it was so big that after a salad and half the sandwich, took the other half home and had it a couple of days later, heating it up with my secret patented method. :)

Quite often, when thinking about where I might want to eat during the week, I wonder where in our great big city, that night, be it a Monday or Tuesday or whatever, some restaurant is running a daily special that night that I am not aware of. I am not speaking of a daily special in the sense of "tonight we have sea bass on the menu". I am thinking about a restaurant that has a special on a certain day of the week, every week. Kind of like the Tuesday Taco night concept, but expanded for every kind of food. By way of example, I believe there is a restaurant on Westwood that one day a week has all you can eat mussels frite. That kind of thing. I am posting this on a Thursday, and wondering if somewhere some restaurant has a great or interesting Thursday deal. If you are aware of a list, or of a restaurant that has one that you can recommend, please share. Here's one: Monday is $1.00 taco night at Barragans, and they are good tacos (IMHO).

Taking my kid to visit USC end of next week. What's a cool

Oops. Bacaro open only for dinner apparently. Guess you'll have to take her to UCLA for her undergraduate work. You can thank me later.

OK. I am only doing this because I feel sympathy for you. Try Bacaro on Union.

But have the decency to have your loved child do her graduate work at UCLA so she can get a job. :)

The Pastrami List 2014

Since no one else appears they want to stick up for Johnnies pastrami on Sepulveda, I will do it. I think they are great; pricey but great. And they have the best chili cheese fries with onions, in LA. I have tried every single one of the ten except Wexlers, and I would get Johnnies over every single one. And as to the different types, if I wanted a kosher style pastrami, personally, I would go to Labels over Langers, though I acknowledge the cult status of Langers.

Fatal Attraction

Oki Dog. It's greasy, its not good for me, the fries taste like they have been cooked in grease that's been there for months, and yet its the same greasy oki dog with an order of fries that once every couple of years calls to me like the sirens of yore.

Looking for Chicken Vesuvio (heavy on the garlic!)

Thanks for the reply, Servorg. Unfortunately, the picture looks like it is tomato based, and the one I am looking for is not.

Looking for Chicken Vesuvio (heavy on the garlic!)

Looking for a moderately priced restaurant that prepares and serves a Chicago style Chicken Vesuvio, heavy on the garlic. Downtown west to Santa Monica. Thank you.

Chicago Style=it is a dish that is omnipresent on menus in Chicago. Quartered chicken, cooked with wine, chicken stock, oregano, and most of all garlic. Sort of made famous by Harry Caray's.

Best Eats for $2

My first job was at Baskin Robbins. 1966. Pico and La Cienega. But I have to say, the "Burgundy Cherry" at Thrifty, (as it was then called before legal issues required the change of name to Black Cherry), was better than our stuff.

Chicken and Sausage Italian dish???

Some years ago, Dante Restaurant on Wilshire had a chicken and sausage dish on the menu (Chicken Dante??) that was great. Looking for an Italian restaurant that has such a dish. Any ideas?

Is there better Italian in LA than Madeo?

The world is a very big place. For one, the pasta with a duck bolognese at Crispo in New York is way better. Not saying Madeo is bad, but.....

New to eating mussels - where should I try?

First, when I thinking of a great mussel restaurant, I also think of black mussels rather than green mussels. I think that is because I began to seriously like them in Europe, where the great restaurants that serve mussels as a specialty, generally use black mussels.

Having tasted both black and green mussels throughout LA, my personal favorites are the mussels and frites at Lillys in Venice. The entree is a large bowl of tender, plump, and tasty mussels in a wonderful broth. The fries are great, add a glass of wine, and dip the bread in the broth, and its a great dinner. Can't speak much to the rest of their menu, but those mussels are great.

Survey of LA Hounds

I want to play. Fast version!

1. Fathers Office. mediocre burger, overcrowded.

2.Oki Dog. The Oki Dog. A greasy heart bomb masterpiece of tortilla, chili, hot dogs, pastrami, and cabbage.

3. Lawrys. It may not always be the best cut of prime rib in your life, but it's always good, and no one I"ve ever taken has not liked it. (Plus cheap corkage which everybody likes.)

4. Cut. Love a great steak and looking foward to the meal.

French Fries (and a request for knowledge from a West Side old timer (like me))

Thank you.

French Fries (and a request for knowledge from a West Side old timer (like me))

I am sometimes bugged by the inability of some places to prepare a simple tasty french fry. After all, it should be an elongated piece of cut potato properly fried. And while I grant that there is nothing wrong with cooking it in fat versus oil, or one oil versus another, or putting parmesan on it, or truffle oil, or whatever, my preference is a simple fry cooked in clean oil, rather than one on which something has been put beyond salt and pepper.(particularly one that is coated which should simply be banned!). So in that vein, I propose the french fry at Apple Pan as a simple, yet majestic example, of what a simple hot french fry should taste like. Is there a better simple fry out there?

Now the trivia for an old timer: Many (like 55) years ago, there was a restaurant at Pico and Sherbourne on the North-East side of the street. A simple place, that made a great simple french fry a la Apple Pan, its contemporary. Someone once posted its name here on chowhound, but alas a search has not uncovered it. If you know the name, please let me know.

Ruen Pair Shopping Center

Thank you. Don't know how I missed that thread but it was right on point. Noticed though that there was no discussion of Thai Patio which is at the corner. Anyway, thanks for the link.

Ruen Pair Shopping Center

I'm a fan of Ruen Pair. But I'm also curious about all the other restaurants in the same shopping center. If anyone has tried Ruen Pair and 1 or more of the others, I'd be interested in their opinion, comparing the restaurants and food items. Thanks.

Bludso's BBQ is coming to Hollywood at old Tar Pit location!

But will it have the same $30 Texas Sampler that feeds 4? Or instead the West Side $30 small slab of ribs that barely feeds 2. That is the question. If the former, I'll be one of the first there. Here's hoping.

Top 10 Chili Dogs in LA

As to Skooby's I liked their fries and lemonade but for whatever reason, that I can't remember, the dog did not impress. It just might have been time and place because as we all know, time and place has a lot to do with how we perceive the food we eat. By the way, speaking of dogs, the dog they used to sell at Costco was darn good. We think the dog of late is not as good, though factoring in cost, it's hard to beat.

I should have been more specific. I was not saying LA Versailles is better than cuban food in Miami. I was just saying that LA Versailles is better than Miami Versailles.

Versailles

OK, but to be fair. I've eaten at Versailles in Miami and the restaurants here on both Venice and La Cienaga and I would take the garlic chicken and lechon asado here in a heartbeat over the flavorless stuff they serve in Miami. And so would everyone else in my party that has eaten here and in Miami.

What good AYCE Korean BBQ also has great banchan?

So everyone has their 1 or 2 favorite Korean BBQ place. For us, non-AYCE, it is Park. But I'm looking for a good to great AYCE BBQ place that has really good banchan as well. It also has to have a nice green salad. Thoughts?
