Looking for an inexpensive, special dinner for two in Brooklyn

I would recommend Kaz An Nou in Prospect heights. Small, intimate, often have live music, BYOB, kind of a hole in the wall, but very affordable and great French Caribbean food. Another similar option would be Abistro in Fort Green. West African food which is also cozy, charming and Affordable (and byob)- if you go there, get the Senegalese fried chicken!

all great suggestions. We ended up doing a number of things. 1. grilled tomatoes, 2. tomato, mozz, basil salad, 3. shakshuka breakfast (eggs simmered in roasted spicy tomatoes) and just put tomatoes in everything i've eaten for the last few days!

We got about a billion Tomatoes! Any creative ideas about what to make with them?

2 extra tickets to Little Owl the Venue All you can eat crab boil

I Bought 5 tickets to the all you can eat crab boil at The Little Owl Venue through Blackboard Eats and due to the Hurricane, it was canceled and rescheduled for tomorrow night. 2 of my original party can no longer make it, which leaves me with two extra tickets for 9pm tomorrow night. They are $45 each and here is a link to the information: http://blackboardeats.com/sp/little-owl-the-venue-west-village-new-york

Anyone want crab? It looks like a lot of delicious fun and I don't want to be out $90, so it could be win win!

Ballard- Restaurant gift certificate for a wedding present

A couple of my newly wed friends are living in Ballard and for a present I wanted to get them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant for them to have a special date. Trying to keep it to $75, so nothing too fancy/expensive, just something really special that they would enjoy. One of them is a semi veg, but other than that, they eat most things.

CSA pick-up bounty night! what to cook!?

Great ideas! this has been really fun and i've loved reading everyone's unique thoughts and ideas and will definitely use all of them at some point throughout the season. We ended up making homemade pizza. One with scape pesto, goat cheese, squash, caramelized onions, and kale. The other with a tomato sauce, tomatoes, mozzarella, pancetta, and onions.

It was my first time making pizza and i'll have to admit, it came out pretty great!
Thanks for the great ideas!

CSA pick-up bounty night! what to cook!?

This week we will likely get-

- corn or broccoli lettuce
- bok choy,
- salad mix or arugula
- beans
- onions,
-a cucumber
- assorted squashes
-tomatoes
- and peppers or eggplants

It's become our tradition to cook something really different and interesting with as many of the fresh ingredients as possible on bounty night. Any ideas?

Any sources for sushi-sashimi-grade salmon near Park Slope?

I looked into this a couple of years ago and got some sushi grade fish at Ocean Fish market on 7th ave in Park Slope. I've heard Park Slope Seafood just down the block has sushi grade as well, but only tried the fish from Ocean. It was very good and affordable.

-snap peas

Any fun new ideas?

CSA pick-up bounty night! what to cook!?

Excellent suggestions! thanks so much! We obviously couldn't use it all in one go so i'll give those things a try.

We ended up making a roasted pork tenderloin stuffed with broccoli rabe (a welcome addition to the bounty), mushrooms, scallions, and garlic with a side of cold sesame noodles with scape, turnip, bokchoy, and scallions.

But both the turnip/scallion relish/ lettuce wrap and the egg cups sound like fun recipes to try with the rest! Maybe brunch tomorrow!

CSA pick-up bounty night! what to cook!?

Our first CSA (community sponsored agriculture) pick-up is tonight and we're excited to use our random batch of ingredients to make a creative meal. The fun part of the CSA is that you get a random selections of whatever is fresh and in season which forces you away from the routines of getting the same things at the store

Today's bounty will likely include:
-lime green oakleaf lettuce
-Red Russian kale
- green Swiss chard
-bok choy
- scallions
- garlic scapes
-sweet, white Japanese turnips
- and herb pots (Red Rubin basil and Greek oregano).

Any thoughts on interesting, creative recipes/dishes that utilize a chunk of those ingredients?
we love meat, seafood, fish... well pretty much everything

most interesting places to eat in Brooklyn

I Just ate at Traif last night for the first time and was wildly impressed. Really good small plates, very innovative and interesting menu, not terribly pricey, and a fun, hip, happening atmosphere. Was saying it might be one of my new top five for the borough.

Tuesdays in the 30's

Last week we went to Kun Jip (even though we've read mixed reviews, our friend swears by it.) Although the Bi-Bim-Bop didn't blow us away, everything else was terrific and it was a really fun atmosphere. We ate the spicy tofu stew, dumplings, and a baked egg dish in addition to the good, but not great bulgogi bibimbap.

Looking forward to tonight. Might mix it up a little and do some noshing in eatily.

Tuesdays in the 30's

Last Tuesday we went to Arirang in K-town and had the chicken Kar-jaebe and seafood pancake. It was a great choice for the rainy day and the price was pretty good. Looking forward to trying out another place tomorrow.

Great! I'll let you know where we end up tonight! Thanks!

Tuesdays in the 30's

My boyfriend and I are taking a class on 30th street and 5th ave. It's every Tuesday for 10 weeks and we've decided to make it sort of a 'date night' and grab dinner after the class. We obviously want to try different places every week, maybe starting in Korea Town. Any suggestions for one or multiple Tuesday in the 30's?

What's the perfect start to a 3 day Barcelona food adventure

We will be arriving in Barcelona at 8am on Friday and will be eating our way through the city. Can any one suggest a great place to start the food spectacular? To die for tortilla, delicious breakfast or anything that will just get us in the spirit. Also, any any must eats for the rest of our short trip would be much appreciated. We have reservations at Cinc Sentits on Friday night for dinner, and that will be our big splurge.

Really Special dinner in Barcelona

My boyfriend and I booked a really cheap trip to Barcelona for a long weekend, and because everything has been so cheap, we want to splurge a little and have a REALLY special dinner on Sunday April 10th. Price wise we are thinking up to about 100 Euros/person, give or take, but something really memorable. We are both foodies so exceptional food and wine is more important than price, and i guess atmosphere. Any suggestions??

While we're at it, any suggestions for the rest of our trip? best tapas? wine? snacks? lunches? etc. Generally we base most of our travels on food, so bring it on! We're staying in the Gothic quarter, but don't mind going anywhere around.

Thanks!

Restaurant week 2011 musts and must nots

Once again overwhelmed by the heady list of big contenders for restaurant week 2011. Definitely want to hit one or two up. Any advice on what should and should not be missed?

I'm turning 30 in two weeks - Bk venue brainstorm?

Barn/Farm on flatbush. Good farm to table-ish food and a great bark.

Need a great holiday office party suggestion...

It's that time of year again. Looking for another great place. Last year we ended up at Les Halles and although the food was good, the space was a little cramped. Looking for about 50-70 people, open bar and passed hors d'oeuvres plus dinner. (set menu, family style, or buffet are fine options). Should be less than $125/person all included and have a fun, open atmosphere and more importantly, great food.

Potluck WOW dish

My company is having a potluck and I want to bring a unique dish that will WOW. Things to keep in mind:
-Only way to reheat is a microwave at the beginning of the potluck (so not something that has to be super hot or cooked last minute)
-I commute by train, so not something cumbersome to get to work in the morning
-There will be plenty of food, so i don't need a ton, just something that will stand out.
-it's on a Thursday, so i'd make it Wed night. Just nothing super complicated that it would require the whole night.

I want to hear a lot of 'wow, who mad that _____________ dish?!?' for at least a day or two!

ISO Maras Pepper and Urfa

I recently read something somewhere that touted the Turkish spices of Maras Pepper and Urfa Pepper. This inspired a little 'city scavenger hunt' which has yielded no success. I'm tempted to buy it online, but that just takes the fun out of it. Does anyone have any ideas as to specialty spice stores where I might be able to find them or know of them specifically?

Thanks

Fun dinner in brooklyn! (

I have a friend in town and a few of us want to grab dinner in Park slope/Ft Green/ Prospect Heights/ or Carrol Gardens. It's a small group and we are looking for something fun and original, but not terribly pricey. Food and atmosphere are the most important. We are meeting people at a bar in Park Slope later in the evening, so not too far. BYO is preferred, but not absolutely necessary.

Thanks!

Breadfruit in Brooklyn....

There's a bodega on Washington Ave and maybe Lefferts ave (lefferts garden) that i picked on up from once. not sure the exact location or name, but there is a big Island population there and you might have some luck.
