LA Hound SOS! Help Refine My Reastaurant List for a 10 Day NYC Visit !

I'll take a run at the dessert, I think I'm up for that.

LA Hound SOS! Help Refine My Reastaurant List for a 10 Day NYC Visit !

Thank you for taking so much trouble with this reply! I will do lunch at Del Posto for sure, sounds like an amazing deal.

I just had dinner at Alinea in Chicago and I feel WD-50 would be to similar an experiance. I think that style of cooking is fun (usually very expensive), but once or twice a year is enough for me.

I'll ditch Gramercy as you recomend, I had my doubts anyway.

Still torn about EMP, maybe lunch is a good compromise. Thanks again for all the help!

Thanks! This is all very helpful. The LV Milos tip is also much appreciated, I'm frequently in vegas and I'll make a point to try it.

Thanks. I'll keep all of that in mind. I'm not much of a brunch person anyway.

I'm so disappointed by Buchon, in Beverly Hills, that I'm not risking another meal on a Keller property. I'll go to Minetta Tavern for sure.

Huckleberry: Best Fried Chicken in LA - No, Most interesting - Maybe

Huckleberry was recently named as having the best fried chicken in LA by Bon Appétit. I just tried it and it's not even close to being the best. It's interesting though, certainly worth trying once. Bring a friend to split with, the portion is ridiculously large.

Westside dining recommendations - Middle Eastern

Flame on Westwood is my favorite place for Persain food.

Comme Ca? You're kidding, Right?

Although the OP seemed to be sour on Comme Ca from the start, I think he’s right about the food I had a lousy dinner there and decided I wouldn’t go back. However, after J. Gold 's singing the praises of the hamburger I returned for lunch. Total mistake, burger was nothing and I think I was charged $5 for tap water. I’ve liked my meals at Sona but I haven’t been back for years maybe their growing to rapidly. O yeah I'm hateing on Boule too.

(Report) Riva in Santa Monica

I was disappointed too. Apart from the lovely bartender nothing worth mentioning from my first visit. Hopefully they will improve the food.

Oakland or Berkley Restaurant

I'm fly into the oakland airport and want to have a great dinner very soon after landing. I was thinking Chez Panisse but their only reservation available is later than I want. Any other suggestion for great food within 20 minutes of the airport? Thanks.

Bakery with Long Bread Sticks(Grissini)

I hope to find some grissini that are a couple feet long, preferably available on the west side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Memphis -- Costa Mesa -- 2007

I stopped going years ago for these very reasons.

San Francisco 22:New York 0 - Review(long)

Thanks to everyone who posted in response to my plea for advice on good NYC food (San Francisco 22:New York 0). I just got back from my trip and had a much better visit this time from a culinary point of view.

Day One: Started my visit with breakfast at Sarabeth’s good French toast and a great location right off central park. I love that a side of bacon is enough for three people but was all mine. Lunch was disappointing decided to go to Burger Joint sense I was in the area and no hound recs were around here. Long line, hot gritty space, and a decent but in no way extraordinary burger. I should add that I was warned not to get burgers or Mexican food while in New York, but I’m a rebel. Dinner was in three parts first, Grand Central Oyster Bar, loved the vibe, loved the oysters. Had both fried and raw and will definitely be coming back for more. Then stopped at The House on a whim (looked nice) good steamed clams and wine. Not a real exciting looking menu but if I was in the area and hungry I would stop back for another bite at the bar. Then Casa Mono this was also good but not as great as I was hoping. Had the duck egg, foie gras and fidaios (clams, chorizo, and pasta?). The duck egg dish was over salted but still rich and pleasant. The foie gras was the best dish but it’s pairing with onions was not particularly inspired. And the fidaios(sp?), nice - but strange in appearance and a one note dish. And that was it until 4:30am when we hit The Diner for grilled cheese and fries to soak up some alcohol from are systems.

Day Two: Lunch/Brunch at Sfoglia, this was my second favorite meal from the trip. Very fun antipasto app which was a generous plate of great little unrelated dishes. Then the house made Italian sausage with stone fruit. Great Dish! Simple, with no embellishments. I couldn’t finish everything and I’m still regretting it. Snack: Doughnut Plant coconut doughnut for a snack. This is what Krispy Kream wants to be when it grows up. Dinner was Famous Fat Dave’s Wheels of Steel Eating Tour this culinary event is a post in itself. Let me just say now it is a foodie tourist must do!

Day Three: Lunch/Brunch at Fatty Crab, very enjoyable, the best dishes were the Watermelon and Pork Salad, Black Pepper Mussels, and Pork Buns. I was definitely glad to have tried this place but don’t think it ranked a return visit. The tables were a little on the small side. Offered $3 PBR, cool. Dinner was again in three parts starting with Momofuko Noodle Bar, pork buns were even better than those at fatty crab. The sweet corn and shrimp was not exciting. I would like to try a bowl of pork neck noodles next time, seem to be what everyone was getting. At Red Cat the scallops with peas and mushrooms were good but the clams with sausage were just OK. Nice space, nice neighborhood, would come again. Finally, Tia Pol - loved the space, loved the people, wasn’t crazy about the food except for the chorizo and bittersweet chocolate which sounds nasty but was wonderful. Great wine list will definitely come back to drink and give the tapas another try.

Day Four: Grabbed a pastrami Ruben from Katz Deli on the way to the plane. This was my favorite meal this trip! I would fly back just to have this again!

Thanks again to everyone who posted. You hounds are the best!

Vanilla Bake Shop... a small protest for a small cupcake

Just tried Vanilla Bake Shop yesterday for the first time. I though they did a good job. The Pumpkin and Meyer Lemon cupcakes were great. The Key Lime, a little disappointing, although I thought coating it with gram cracker crumbs was clever. For me the shot glasses were also a fun idea but the banana pudding I tried was lacking and $2 for one bite is not exactly a bargain. If I go back I'll stick to the cupcakes but Dainties is still my favorite.

Chowhond Meetup at Malo

It was great meeting so many other hounds (ChicaChow, Jaquilynne, Dommy, P., Kris P. Pata, etc.). I'm just sorry I didn't have a chance to talk to everyone. As for the food it wasn't anything I would pay to have again but I really appreicated Chowhound hosting the event. Thanks

Will do.

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

Thanks. It off the list it was hard for me to beleave that it would be better than Langers anyway.

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

Thanks for all the advise! In order to be sure to hit a lot of the great true New York food I booked a 'midnight munchies' tour (10-2am) with famous fat dave. I'm confident he will lead me to some great food. The places that have made my personal list to try are:

Momofuku Noodle Bar
Tia Pol
Casa Mono
Room 4 dessert
Fatty Crab
Bar Jamon
Katz's
Red Cat

Thanks again!

A branch of the Craft chain is going to open here in L.A. soon. I think I'll just save it until then. More so because craftbar was a dissapointment on my last visit.

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

It sounds like your right and I'm going to have to change my mind set about New York food. My ideal was to dine at places I had heard of but were also endorsed by New York Hounds. Now I'll just focus on the food and not worry as much about name recognition.

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

Wow! Great looking list and I've never herd of any of them. I'll definately have to do some research. What restaurants that get alot of national press are worth the hype?

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

I'll put Momofuko Ssam Bar on the list.

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

What is RGR eating tour? I'll add Katz's to my list for lunch but we have Nate and Al's, Greenblats, and Langer's here so it will have to be fantastic to impress me.

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

I suspected this.

San Francisco 22 : New York 0

On my last trip to New York (live in L.A.) I was dissapointed with the restaurants I tried. I've alway understood that New York had a great culinary landscape, yet it disappointed. While every time I go to San Francisco I'm blowen away by everything.

Hounds help me run up some points for NYC on my August trip. Last trip didn't like Norma's (breakfast), Craftbar(brunch), Prune, Blue Ribbon, Gusto, or anything else. Nobu was fine but we have one in Malibu as well as the flag ship Matsuitsa.

Casual great food is my preferance. I don't want to wear a suit during August in New York. However, I'll wear a clown costume and a heavy winter coat if it will insure me a great meal. Also, I prefer meals that take less than three hour to eat.

Price no object. Anywhere in the city is fine. I'm comming to eat.
