I live 2 blocks from Taco Surf. What blows your skirt up there? I have been under-whelmed in the past.

Here in Pacific Beach, the land of a thousand sushi bars and tattoo parlors, I see the majority of the patrons ordering myriad types of combination rolls adorned with cutesy names. I doubt what Morita-san crafts would be appreciated by this crowd. They might even be upset that they can't order their beloved PB Dog Crunchy Roll Suprise.

I am always stunned by the quality of the food that comes out of that tiny kitchen at Cass St. Bar and Grill.
Short Visit (Unfortunately!)
Yup, that is the place (Smart & Final strip mall). My favorite is the large Vuelve ala Vida $13. Served with fresh avocado slices, this mixed mariscos cocktel is fantastic.

mmm campechana :) Good call Josh. Don't miss out on one of these excel. It is kind of like a baja style seafood cocktail. Truly excellent. I get my fix on at the tiny dive La Playita on Clairmont Mesa Blvd. near the 805 freeway.

Since you will be in North Mission, you may be as close to Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach, as you are to the roller coaster in South Mission. With that in mind here are some PB recs:
Latin Chef: Freddy, an accomplished Peruvian Chef, turns out great South American food in his casual little restaurant on Garnet Ave. Try the Aji de Galina, or his awesome anticuchos.
Surfside Sushi: This Mission Ave. Sushi Bar is a cut above the rest (PB must have the most Sushi Bars and Tattoo Parlors per capita in the nation), though by no means on the level of Kaito or Ota it is, however, walkable or an easy bike ride for you.
The Tap Room on Garnet Ave: Here you can try San Diego's epic craft brew scene. Don't leave town without sampling some Lost Abby and Alesmith products.
Pasta Espresso: This tiny dive on Hains Ave around the corner from Garnet Ave. features tasty house-made pasta and sauces at cheap prices.
Bare Back Bar and Grill on Mission Blvd: I just love the Bare Little Lamb, lamb burger here. It is super Juicy, and comes with a delicious blue cheese-mint dressing.

Kono's is a one trick pony. Only order the #1 - #4 egg burritios all of which are excellent, and the size of a small cat. Kono's potatoes are pretty good too. The rest of the menu is just bleh.
Caciques Products
Do any of the major supermarket chains cary Caciques products. Naomi Wise made it sound like they are quite prevelant. I want to try their chorizo and cheeses.
Claremont Sabrett Hot Dog Stand
It is excellent. The Hispanic grandmother that operates it is very nice. Glad to hear she is back, last couple ot times I drove by she was not there.
Top 3 'whole in the wall' Mexican in PB
La Playa on Mission Blvd. (North Mission Beach), just south of The Catamaran Hotel, has excellent carnitas tacos, and their daily home-made soups are great as well. If the sopa is albondigas or pozole, don't pass it up.
Bahia Don Bravo on the southeast corner of Grand Ave. and Bayard in PB has good fish tacos and lobster burritos.
Good Jewish Deli? Looking for Lox, Matzo Ball Soup, Rye, and Half Sour Pickles
The Matzo Ball Soup is actually one of DZ's better offerings. Rye and pickles, not so much.
Comic-Con 2010 -- New and improved!
Since you liked the fish tacos at SBB&G, you should try them at the nearby Mariscos German truck in the Apple Tree Market parking lot on Cable St. around the corner from Newport. They are much better than SBB&G. Try a Gobernador.
Delicious Sunday Seafood?
I'll second the Fishery. I live walking distance from it and dine there frequently. It has all the elements you requested, except it is not downtown which is why I did not mention it. If you dont have a car, it will be a pricey cab ride round trip.
Delicious Sunday Seafood?
This is actually kind of a tough one. The Oceanaire Seafood Room will provide the best seafood meals. They are a high end chain though, so I don't see the local flair. They have a swanky oyster bar that I just love.
The Fish Market has fantastic waterfront views. Their cold offerings, appetizers, sashimi, sides, and sourdough bread are all very good. Fish preparation is uneven so it can be hit or miss. You will get your local flair here, but the vast dining area is not what I would call cozy or intimate.
Tin Fish is a little hole in the wall joint, and while I have not been, they get some love on this board.
Cafe Chloe is a French Bistro that I am sure you will like. It is cozy and intimate, and is unique to San Diego. They are not a seafood restaurant per se, but always have well prepared seafood offerings on their menu. CC is a downtown board darling.

Good Deals for Lunch
Hob Nob is definately "Blue Hair Central." This is especially true around 4-5pm. The old folks love eating dinner early.
The Dining Room or La Folie or Fleur de Lys or ?
Hey, San Diego hound here, but I am in SF all the time, and lived in San Mateo for two years.
If you like Foie Gras, Rolland Passot is your man. I took a class from him on foie gras, and his knowledge of preparing this product is boundless. In my opinion, the food at La Folie is outstanding. I did feel the atmoshpere, while still very nice, was not as formal as Fleur de Lys.

Exotic forms of sushi for the timid adventurer?
I love the flavor and texture of well prepared ankimo as well. "The Foie Gras of the sea" as they say. A few years ago I met, through mutual friends, a CIA graduate who had headed the fish station at The French Laundry. He told me tales of the crazy parasitical worms he had pulled from Monkfish Livers during prep. Remember, they are bottom feeders. I have never quite felt the same about ankimo since then.
Alexander's: Turned Away and Turned Off
Assuming the Chef puts any effort whatsoever into creating his/her offerings, the flavor profile of aged Parm, and that of Burrata are light-years apart. Substituting in this fashion would completely change the dish. Why not just say they ran out, and give you the opportunity to order something else.
Downtown - Saturday Happy Hour?
I agree Analog looks to have potential. Unfortunately they do not have happy hour on Saturdays.
Comic-Con 2010 -- New and improved!
"this shop would go out of business in a week in Berlin."
I don't doubt that for a second.
I wish the owners would work on making improvements. I may e-mail them and complain about the sauces. When I was last there, all they had was that whimpy yogurt sauce. The least they could do is offer up a spicy red, and a garlic sauce. How tough could it be to figure out how to make those?

In my opinion, you are being to hard on The Kebab Shop. The product they sell as a donor kebab is not a bad dish. It is just not living up to its potential.

London chowhound looking for tips!
For a hole in the wall try Latin Chef on Garnet Ave. a few blocks east of your hotel. Owner Freddie's Peruvian and Brazilian fare is quite good. I like the anticuchos, Aji de Galina, and Ceviche.

Comic-Con 2010 -- New and improved!
I agree that The Kebob Shop's doner kebab sauce falls flat on its face. The truck I patronized while living in Oxford had several sauces, but their Spicy Garlic rocked my world. There are quite a few Donor Kebab trucks in Oxford serving late night food to all the college students. I tried them all, most were meh, but this one I found was a gem. It was the furthest one from Magdalen College where I was living, but it was worth the haul. I thought about it for a while, and it was not just one sauce. My buddy and I would ask for a combination of the Spicy Red Sauce and the Garlic Sauce.
Comic-Con 2010 -- New and improved!
Though The Kebob Shop's doners pale in comparison to my favorite truck in Oxford, England, why would you say they "don't have much to do with doner?" Am I missing something?
Comic-Con 2010 -- New and improved!
I know from past years that many of the Comic Con attendees are budget consious. With that in mind I will throw out:
Valentine's Mexican Food at 842 Market St.
This place is walking distance and has big portions, with reasonably cheap prices.
Their daily specials (guisados) can represent some pretty decent Mexican home-style cooking.
I think Valentine's is perfect for the budget minded Comic Coner.
Coming to SD this weekend! Need Burrito Help!
I think the Bird Rock location is better, but I visit the Grand Ave. location more often since it is just three blocks from my home.
