Larkin's, Hungry Cat, or Grace

I just had my birthday dinner at Grace a week ago -- loved it! I had a fantastic salmon dish (although you're right, the menu changes a lot), the Thai lobster soup to start, and a strawberry tart with a candle in it for dessert. Tell them it's a birthday dinner -- they make a special place even more special for the occasion.

Patio restaurant in L.A. or S.F. Valley for June Shower

Cliff's Edge in Silverlake would be nice.

Has anybody had the Grace 5yr tasting menu?

I was there with my parents and brother over Thanksgiving weekend, and two of the four of us had the 5-year menu (it seems to have changed somewhat since the OP's list). Everyone agreed that it was fantastic and an amazing deal, including the wine pairings. The thing that I love about Grace is that they won't make everyone do the tasting menu, and they make sure it isn't awkward on the two courses where some people are getting food while others aren't. A really great experience.

Any good places to pick up a dinner salad in Los Feliz?

I've done takeout a few times at Tropicalia on Hillhurst -- I enjoy their salads (although I'm not so sure how healthy they really are).

Birthday In Buffalo

Happy birthday! I grew up in Buffalo and visit quite often, so I remember meals at Chef's and Just Pasta and I'm familiar with your choices. I'd say that Hutch's is probably closest in atmosphere to Just Pasta, and I really enjoy the food. It is quite small and crowded, though, so a party of 6 may feel a bit cramped in the space. I also really enjoy Bacchus, which is a more comfortable space with great food, and if you're a fan of wine, it's a great choice. Also, the atmosphere on Chippewa is really fun now (and not in the way it used to be). Have fun!

Quiet but trendy and good food for foodie grandma's birthday

I'd check out Grace -- food and ambience seem to be just what you're looking for, and they have a semi-private room that might fit the bill. I also agree with the Josie recommendation.

Wine List at JAR?

I don't remember much that seemed interesting in that price range -- last time I was there, I was thinking that I might bring a bottle next time and pay the corkage.

where can i get abita purple haze?

I've also found it at Cap'n Cork's, on Hillhurst in Los Feliz -- but they don't always have it. I'm very excited to hear from the others that they have it at BevMo -- a Purple Haze would taste great in this weather.

anything new or noteworthy around LA Live/Nokia?

Within walking distance, I like the Palm or Riordan's Tavern (that's more for a drink and some pretty good bar food). Have fun at the show!

Downtown business dinner -- best food and most fun!

Thanks all! I was thinking I might be overlooking some fantastic downtown spot that has it all. Looks like we need to wait for some new places to open. I think they'll enjoy Blue Velvet, but one of my colleagues really thinks that Cicada's the better choice, so we'll do that and hope it's a great night there. At least it's an amazing room.

Downtown business dinner -- best food and most fun!

We've got some colleagues coming in from Chicago on Wednesday, and we'd like to go someplace with great food that's also kind of lively. Since they're from Chicago, we'd like to do something they don't have there (so The Palm's out). Initially we thought Patina, but they're closed for a private event. I was at Cicada recently and had a nice dinner but wasn't thrilled. I haven't been to Water Grill in a few years -- while the food was excellent, I thought the atmosphere was a little stodgy. Has it changed? How about Blue Velvet? Part of me just wants to put them in the car and go to Providence, but downtown's more convenient since that's where they're staying and they'll be arriving just before dinner. I'd appreciate any ideas you may have for upscale downtown places with great food and a fun atmosphere. Many thanks!

What to Order at Josie?

I love the venison. And the fried rapini side.

Opinions about Tangier?

The food's ok, and some of the shows are pretty good, but the thing is, some nights it's completely dead and not that fun. I'd go somewhere else. As Chowpatty mentioned, you have lots of good options right near there. I'm loving Little Dom's on the same block.

HELP! Thoughts on CAFE STELLA (Silverlake)?

I love Cafe Stella. If you ask to sit off to the side outside, you can avoid smoke if there is any (I go pretty often, and it varies).

WILD BOAR AT GRACE - BEST ENTREE IN CITY?

I agree, the boar at Grace is a fantastic entree! Another favorite of mine is the venison at Josie (especially when we order a side of the fried rapini).

Eastside Sunday Happy Hour

I'm not sure if they have an official happy hour, but Mixville Bar at Edendale Grill has a great patio, and they make a nice cocktail.

Grace Restaurant Tonight...

I really love the boar, and for me the sides that come with it are just perfect. I'd give it a shot! I really enjoyed the Thai soup last time I was there too.

DineLA Grace Warning

This doesn't seem like a problem to me. They did offer the $34 menu published on the website, right? Seems to me that offering a few items in addition to the expected menu for a supplemental charge gives you more choices, and it's still a better deal than going on a regular night.

Grace for solo dining?

Yes, they have a nice bar with friendly bartenders, and they serve the full menu there. I'd maybe skip it during prime time on weekends, when it fills up with people waiting for tables, but generally it's lively without being overwhelming, and it's a friendly atmosphere. As I think about it, I'm tempted to take myself there one evening too!

Moules & Beer spots in LA?

I second Chowpatty's suggestions, and I'd add Mimosa to the French list -- they offer a few preparations for their moules. I also just had some great mussels at Village Idiot. I'm not sure what they have in the way of Belgian beers, but I'm guessing they have a few.

BOA? Any recent reviews or experiences?

I really like the West Hollywood one -- one of my favorite places for a steak. Not a huge fan of the one in Santa Monica. The food, service, and atmosphere don't appeal to me as much.

brussel sprounts at good price

Costco had some nice ones last time I was there -- smaller and much less expensive than TJs when I got some last month -- but I'm not sure if they've got them all the time.
