Is Restaurant August the real deal or hype?

If I am not mistaken, wasn't the crabmeat gnocchi and truffle app also an amuse when August first opened?

Gourmet cheese shoppe?

St James Cheese has the best selection. Horrid staff though. I asked the expert staff to help with a blue cheese selection. She found out that I wanted about 1/4 pound of 5 different blue cheeses and proceeded to hunt for approximately 1/4 lb already wrapped. Unfortunatley she misunderstood, what I needed help with was cheese selection not 1/4 lb volume estimation. She was also put out when I asked the names of the cheese she brought to the counter. This is only one of the recent problems I have had with the staff. If there were another comparable cheese store in New Orleans I would never go back to St James. But for now, they are the only game in town.

How did the New Orleans chowhound recommendations fair?

A friend and Kansas-exiled native New Orleanian came in for a short vacation. I decided to try some Chowhound recommendations for our meals.
1. Charlies Seafood- Harahan Perfect stop for a Midwestern, seafood lover back in town--boiled crabs and shrimp perfectly seasoned and excellent fried shrimp. Great recommendation.
2. The Red Slipper- CBD cheap and good with an awesome Bloody Mary. Good recommendation
3. St James Cheese Company- wonderful cheesy food- service needs lots of work- Toss up
4. Restaurant August- Great food and service- Great recommendation
5. Johnny's Poboys- Excellent shrimp poboys- Great recommendation (The Spice and Tea Exchange of New Orleans next door, sells salts, peppers, herbs, and blends- awesome for the NOLA Foodie)
6.Palace Cafe-Horrible Food- returned 3 entrees- never again-Bad recommendation
7.Tommy's Cuisine - Really enjoyed Tommy's Great recommendation
Thanks everyone for their recommendations. You steered up in the right directions

Middendorf's Question

Actually, getting off I-12 to 55 to Manchac and Middendorf's takes about 15 minutes,it's an easy drive. Getting off I-12 to weave your way through Mandeville traffic and Louie's might take longer and is not an easy drive. I love both places. They are very different but I would have to try the thin catfish.

Clam Pizza at Domenica?

Has anyone had the clam pizza at Domenica? What do you think of the clam? I haven't had it yet.
I am a huge New Haven fan of both Sally's and Pepe's. Being from New Orleans, my answer to which is better, I say eat them both!

Andouille Sausage

By far the best, they sell it by the pound. There are two different Jacob's in Laplace. Wayne Jacob's is by far the best. Yes, it is smoked. I'd suggest you find out the best yourself. Jacob's, Bailey's and Wayne Jacobs are near each other. Try all 3 and chose to your liking. You might have to go 3 minutes further to Wayne Jacob's but worth it.

Impastatos vs Sal and Judy's

Honestly, I think Impastatos beats Sal & Judy's hands down. You have to give Impastatos a try, you owe it to yourself. I am craving the crab fingers now. I can almost taste that lemony butter sauce!!!!!

WHAT ABOUT TOMMY'S?

Been twice in the last 3 months. The meals were devine. Love the crabmeat canape and Fish Capri. Heard the Duck Tchoupitoulas and Veal Sorrentina are fantastic. Only problem I endured was a waiter that was hell bent on defining a speckle trout after I had already informed him that we were from New Orleans.

Soft shell crabs to go

I have recently seen soft shells at many of the areas seafood markets. Have her call around to the local live seafood places. I know the market in Mandeville has them and BJs in Hammond, right off the interstate. These are just the few I have been to this week

need a lil more help with gallatoires

To be honest, I think that Fridays are the worst day to experience Galatoires. I have only eaten there once on a Friday and swore I would never do it again. In my opinion, the customers were some of the most blantantly pretentious people with whom I have ever come in contact. For example, one well dressed woman ignored us while we were trying to squeeze into the corner table. She would neither move nor answer our, "excuse me, Please" However, she was also ignoring the conversation with her lunch date waiting for the right moment to look up and say to another woman, Alexis such a wonderful job you did at the film festival. I had to laugh, it was phony. The conversation are extra loud so that all can hear exactly how much they think of themselves. I never returned on a Friday again. The food is to good to have to compete with the loud, obnoxious voices and drunken behavior from the regulars. The food is fantastic just go on any day not Friday lunch

Sclafani's Salad Bowl

Back in the 1970s, I used to eat quite often with my parents at Sclafani's on Causeway. I remember the salad would be made at your table. They would rub the bowl with garlic, mash some anchovies and add the salad dressing. The Salad Dressing. Does anyone know what was in the salad dressing? I remember that it was almost pinkish in color. Does anyone know the recipe or even a good guess at it?

Soaked Salad

As a school kid in New Orleans, the cafeteria ladies would serve us a salad called "soaked salad" I remember it was soaked in dressing and wilted. The dressing was loaded in fresh garlic and I think basil. Does anyone remember this salad? What was the salad dressing recipe?
