just spreading the word about a great Thai place I tried on Thursday

Hubby really likes the Thai House that is down at around 110th and Holmes. Which ones do you prefer? I'm always interested in what others think are
excellent picks....

Morel mushrooms outside of KC

@Irishbeer; please report back if you had any luck with the drying process. Sounds like we went out too early, but last weekend we were in NOLA to cheer on the Jayhawks in their final series. LN: good luck hunting. I hear you need to look on sloped lands, they don't grow so well on flat plains. But we have plenty of sloped limestone country
side to poke around in!

Morel mushrooms outside of KC

We went hunting today. Found one large fellow and several too small to pick in clusters, so we'll go back tomorrow B4 the KU game. Are others finding morels? We've had a week of rain and warmer temps than usual, so I'm betting they are out several weeks early. Any favorite morel recipes to share, for those who carry pillowcases and fill them this time of year??

just spreading the word about a great Thai place I tried on Thursday

My bad, FOTD, I should have prominently put KC in the subj line. I had friends escort 10 Myanmar refugees (Burma) to this place from North of KC....they were so excited when they left this place one evening b/c the chefs would cook 'anything and everything' they remembered from their homeland. I was thrilled for them, b/c I don't find that kind of accomodating attitude at most restaurants, esp. ones that have been favorably reviewed from the local 'foodies' on radio and tv. Usually the opposite occurs.
No, the coconut cake is NOT like any other. I haven't tried yet, but folks with wider minds than mine have said it's unlike anything they've ever tasted, but it's divine. I guess expecting it to be like a traditional coco cake is a HUGE mistake.

just spreading the word about a great Thai place I tried on Thursday

A friend and I finally drove out west to 77th and Quivira to a place another friend has been asking me each week if I've been there, b/c she thinks it's incredible and has been going once every week since it opened about 6 or 7 weeks ago. Called Sweet Siam, I have to say, this is the BEST Thai food I've had in KC, and I eat Thai quite often. Had an eggplant melange that was 2-pepper spicy on the lunch menu. It was perfect! Heated well, but not completely overwhelming the dish. Had half of it to bring home so shared that with hubby and son in the evening. They wanted to go back there Immediately, they thought it was so wonderful. Sauces are simply so fresh...this place is a treasure. And yes, they also have a liquor license. I didn't try their cocomut cake for dessert. I guess that was a huge mistake....

steak dinner - Kansas City

I know it's crazy to suggest a french place for a great steak, but hubby and I have had incredible filets at Cafe des Amis in Parkville. They melt some yummp blue cheese and butter combo over a great steak....heavenly!

Chez Elle -- KC

I've always loved their savory crepes. Particularly one called the 'formage and something or other'.....my kids, college-age, love the place. My Mom, aged and hard of hearing, has an impossible time when we eat inside with her friends. They all said 'never again'....couldn't hear anything...and the patio has very uninviting metal furniture. But the food is excellent. Just catering to a spec demographic, I believe.

Cafe Trio - KC

I've been to their patio 2x in the last 6 months. Always was pleased. Service was very attentive, and our food was excellent. I think this is one treasure, when you want outdoor dining in KC and the weather is glorious....

Prairie Fire Oven/OP Farmer's Market (KC)

I am so glad for the recommendation, Stellamystar. I, too, don't give a whit for all the kitsch that surrounds FM except the MAIN reason for a FM----> FOOD, either things we prepare or others do for us! I'll look for this guy!

thanks for the update, Stellamystar. I have been confined this summer due to some broken bones, but I'm healing well and needing to explore the new places around here.

2 new restaurants opened this summer in Prairie Village shops

They are called Tavern in the Village and another, more upscale one, called Story. Can someone fill me in on their experiences at either of these restaurants? Thanks!

Any great recipes for morel mushrooms?

So thankful to all those responses. I made a dish tonight with filets and 'shrooms, but like others had warned, they are too delicate to eat with strong other flavors. Sauteed a couple of pounds in butter, with some sea salt and pepper, a tiny amt of garlic, and will try this sauce with some milder dishes soon.

Thanks so much for your ideas!

Milano Kansas City

It;s been 10 years since I've eaten there. They were ok. Nothing to rave about, but decent. Hope they haven't gone down hill, b/c that wasn't a fast drop. SHouldn't be posting without positive things to say; slap my wrists.

I've tried searching old posts, but the only place I've found recommended to stop at was a CoffeeHouse in Lamoni just inside Iowa. Anyone have any other recommendations that are worth a spot on this trip?

KC - Best Italian Sausage?

Call me crazy, but HyVee sells a pineapple bratwurst in their meat cases that is wonderful! I usually don't like to mix sweet and savory, but these brats beat anything I've ever tried.... You buy them individually, and I think they charge like 80 cents or a dollar each. Take them home and grill them for 20 minutes on a med low grill.

KC: what's good at Werner's meat market in Mission?

I love all their sausages, esp the smoked polish. Plus, don't skip their potato salad. It's in their cold refrig section, and it is super! No eggs, just a delish potato salad. You can't go wrong with the food in this place.

Kansas City "musts"

Do your palate (1st) and your wallet (2nd) a favor and go to Cafe Tempo at Jo Co Community College. Open for lunch, and make sure you save room for dessert. Tonight, we tried Broadmoor Bistro, and were wowed with what those kids could do for $25/plate for 4 courses.

Students need our critical and appreciative eyes to urge them forward in the culinary arts. Support these incredible programs. (Your stomachs will thank you).

I drove by today and I believe this place is called Sabuka Buffet (noodle shop). Is it truly a buffet; has anyone been here? It's only opened recently.

Hot and Sour Soup

I too kept this recipe from Cooks Illustrated from my copy. And yes, I believe the instructions are not clear with all the side mixtures. But you really can't go wrong with this one; I've made it repeatedly and I LOVE it. Spicy and delicious.

Has anyone tried this new place that recently opened at this intersection, next to a Chili shop and Petco? I'm curious for some feedback before I stop in. Appears to be Japanese or Korean possibly?

Thanks, Sara

Offal and other specialty meats in Kansas City

Yep, Bichelmeyers' just over the bridge on 7th Street is the BEST source for offal and other ingredients known and loved in this household. I am pleased that I know many of his kids and grandkids....what a great family the Wetzel's are!! Bichelmeyer's, Wetzel's, can't go wrong with that name!!!

Lunch in Lawrence, KS?

I forgot to add that I have to agree with the poster who thought Free State was great years ago. We haven't returned there for at least 5 years. They offer fantastic Beers (which we love), but for food, their quality really slipped. Now it's just standard bar food.

Thanks, but I'll eat elsewhere and stop in there only for an occasional drink. I 2nd Milton's for an excellent b'fast joint.

Lunch in Lawrence, KS?

I was in Lawrence just yesterday for a 'ladies lunch' for 12 of us. We had opted for Pachamama's as I've never been disappointed there. We all thought our food was delicious and the server knew EVERYTHING about all our questions. Very impressed!!

It's rather busy, as we walked in with reservations for 12 at noon, and it was empty. Within 5 minutes, the place was jammed!? I guess it's commencement weekend in Lawrence so we should have expected a huge crowd.

This is a GREAT restaurant. But I have to tell you, you can't leave without eating their Apple Almond Tort with caramel sauce. We ordered several yummy desserts, but this one was the clear winner by FAR from all of us. It would be worth it just to go there for dessert (but be warned, it needs to be split with at least one other person. It's huge, but so nicely plated! ) Go for it!

Best burgers in Kansas

We are partial to Westport Flea Mkt, right in the middle of town, and their burgers are very, very good. Also made with McGonigles meat (which is another reason I think they are delicious). Plus, it's ambience is fairly fun, esp when the weather is great and you can sit outside on the patio....

Branson - god help me, Branson

Yessiree, god help you. I went once with my mother in law on some cooked up 'family reunion' almost 10 years ago. I was stunned beyond my expectations. While I appreciated the fun she was having watching "shows" that I must admit, some were spectacular, the culinary experience in this place is considerably less than you would expect. And while I refuse to go to Vegas ( I abhor gambling and zombie folks that I saw in Monaco while growing up), I shudder that millions of people in this country consider these environs 'decent' entertainment. GOOD LUCK!

Another trip to Kansas.

Tomatoaday,

You're SO right! I feel blessed to live here. People really are into loca-vore foods and it's easy to adjust; the restauranters do their best, and we have the ultimate experimentation. If you can't find something....just ask around. You'll find SOME ONE, SOME WHERE doing it, who can give advice and help. I feel very energized living here (and I've lived everywhere from Paris to Upper Michigan to South GA to Texas, etc)

Nice Brunch in KC

Here is a suggestion. Avenues Bistro on 63rd street in Brookside. Problem is, they don't take reservations (or used to not do so) and they have a GREAT buffet. Actually, you order one entree (like around 6-8 $$ and then the rest of the b'fast/lunch comes as part of the entire price of something like $12.00. This place is heavenly for a weekend buffet, but it's packed, b/c the locals all love it too.
