Friends' Dinner in Key West

Kelly's is good for happy hour and wings - IMO. Their food is not that great. Setting is nice, though. The Grand Cafe is very good. Bagatelle is excellent for people watching. Their lobster mac and cheese was among the best we ever had.

Restaurants en route from Washington, DC area to Northern Neck, Virginia

In addition there is a restaurant in Pope's Creek that opened a few months, Pope's Creek Waterfront. It is on the same road as Captain Billy's, but the food is 200 percent better. This is not a typical Southern Maryland crabhouse but more of an upscale seafood restaurant. (Note: Prices are reasonable.) The restaurant is on the water with a fantastic view. They also have live music on Saturday nights. Have been there six times since they opened and everything is great. The lobster mac n cheese with sundried tomatoes and spinach is rich, but fantastic. Seafood club also good. They have hand cut french fries as well. Crab cakes -- excellent, much better than Captain Billy's. They also make a specialty drink that is local to the area called an orange crush. Fresh OJ, Vodka, peach schnapps or triple sec. Very yummy. Can't say enough about how great this place is.

Newport, RI best eats/ drinks

Just came back from Newport. Loved the Red Parrot. Had garlic bread with shrimp that was awesome. For drinks suggest a short drive over to Castle Hill. Sit out on the Adrondack chairs, have a great drink and watch the sunset. We also had a very upscale dinner at The Mooring. Fantastic seafood pie. Flo's clam shack was pretty good -- clams were excellent.

Myrtle Beach Next Week

Also suggest Market Commons. Sid & Roy's is very good and so is Tommy Bahama's. Sid and Roy's not quite as upscale. Umberto's in Barefoot Landing is pretty good, upscale Italian, but IMHO Myrtle Beach is not the place for upscale Italian. Divine Fish House in Murrells Inlet also excellent upscale. They have very good sushi and seafood. Indo-Thai is in a strip center near the Grande Dunes (17 bypass, near hospital). Excellent sushi.

Pizza Delivery - Foggy Bottom area

My office frequently gets pizza delivered -- usually around 8 to 10 pizzas. The two places we have come to rely on are Ledo's (half the people love it the other half hate it) and the a pizza place in the Watergate Building (Fresco's) -- again half love it and half hate it.

Any other suggestions for pizza delivery in the area? No Domino's or Papa John's. The place also needs to be fairly prompt with delivery if they are several blocks away. Ordered from a great place that several people had eaten at (can't remember the name) but the pizzas were awful by the time they got here. Thanks.

That's where a lot of the dives are. Stay away from all you can eat buffets. Most are pretty bad. Most of the better places (even dive type places) are not near where you are staying. If you don't have a car you are pretty limited. If you don't mind walking out to the main road, Kings Highway, you will have a few more choices -- like Thorny's Steakhouse. Chestnut Hill and Chesapeake House are miles from where you are staying.

Need Southern MD help

Vera's has seen a dramatic improvement. I agree that when it first changed hands it was pretty bad. The setting is so nice, it was a shame the food used to be so bad. I have been here 3 times in the last few months and each time was very good.

List of things to eat/food experiences to have in South Carolina

Not just South Carolina, but a southern dish in general, fried pickles and fried green tomatoes. Shrimp from Shem Creek outside of Charleston, fresh from the boat.

For Solomon's Island Stoneys is great. If the weather is not too hot, I would opt for the pier as it has a great view. Be sure to get their signature drink, an orange crush. Had the softshell sandwich last week and it was very good.

In Calvert County I would highly recommend Vera's White Sands. Great view as well. The stuffed shrimp and the steak with crab imperial have both been very good.

In Charles County, Johnny Boy's BBQ just outside of LaPlata is always top rated. It is basically a roadside stand with picnic tables. Very, very good. Stay away from Waldorf in Charles County as it is mostly chains.

Another good spot in Charles County with a nice view is Crabby Dick's at Port Tobacco Marina. A little off the beaten path. They are closed Tues. and Wed. Not the best out of the restaurants listed, but good for a nice burger, crab cake sandwich, etc. They often have live music, so check their website.

I know people like Clarke's Landing, but it was really, really horrible when we last went -- not only the food but the service as well.

Lunch in Georgetown - cheaper the better

1. Clydes - Chain but still good
2. Cafe La Ruche - if not too hot outside is nice

4. Miss Saigon - on M Street
5. Bistro Francais on M Street runs a daily lunch special with several selections
6. Paper Moon - Italian - also runs daily lunch specials (make sure you ask because there are usually some not listed, even on the board out front)

Murrells Inlets/Litchfield/Pawleys Recs

I've been to both of them. Spud's is pretty good. They generally have live music outside on the weekends and sometimes during the week. I had a very good salad there for lunch. The view is one of the best on the Marsh Walk. I heard they put in a new menu last month, so I have not sampled that yet.

Salt Creek Cafe is also good -- but no view. They also have a really good happy hour. Their shrimp and grits is also very, very good and they do a good job of fried seafood.

Key West Trip Report

Hit up a bunch of places -- happy hours, high end and local places.

Pepe's - Went here for breakfast. It was good, but not great. Special of crab and spinach omelet and french toast with mango sauce. Everything is ala carte. Blue Heaven breakfast is much better.

Blue Heaven - There BLT Eggs Benedict is excellent, Bacon, Lobster and Tomato on Eggs Benedit. Be prepared to wait for a table. They take no reservations. We came early and had a 30 minute wait. Later arrivles were told over an hour.

Also had dinner here -- very good. The caprese salad was one of the best I've ever had. Tomatos had great flavor. Buffalo steak done well. Scallops were the best we had all week.

Better Than Sex - Small Dessert Place. This was the highlight of the trip. Excellent desserts, but the cabernet wine glasses dipped in dark chocolate were fabulous.

Hogfish Bar and Grill - On Stock Island and you will probably need a GPS to find. Really a locals place. Great hogfish sandwich and the best/freshest shrimp we had. Great bargain find.

Bagatelle - Stopped in for dinner just because it looked nice. Ended up being one of the best meals we had. Lobster mac and cheese was probably the best I've had. Ceasar salad with excellent homemade dressing. Small but very good wine list.

Alonzos's - Half price happy hour can't be beat. Clams casino, steamped shrimp, anything off the appetizer side of the menu. All drinks, wine and beer half price.

Dante's - Great happy hours. Half price on all drinks, beer and wine. Nachos were fabulous and enough for about 4 people. Enjoy a swim while you have your drinks.

BO's Fish Wagon - Good fish sandwiches and hamburgers. Hand cut fries. Looks like a dive but food is very good. Beer and wine only.

Guy Harvey's - Best Key Lime Martini I ever had. Highly recommend.

Louie's Backyard - Go for the tapas upstairs. Food is pricey, must make a reservation. Just a nice place to sit and enjoy the view.

Sunset Pier - Only disappointment. Ordered a lobster BLT sandwich. Bread was hard as a rock and 3 tiny pieces of lobster on an $18 sandwich. French fries were frozen shoestring fries. Would not recommend.

Croissants de France - Good Beignets and several different kinds.

Willie T's - Good choice for a sandwich or burger only. Nice laid back atmosphere. Go when they have 2 for 1 mojitos - about 50 different kinds.

Dinner in Alexandria Memorial Day weekend

I also suggest Majestic or Vermillion. I like the Chesapeake Rolls at Flying Fish. Sit at the sushi bar. I had a very good spring Risotto at O'Connells last week. If you go there, though, get an outside table or a table in the back room, otherwise is SOO loud.

Good steak near Fredericksburg?

I have been to Bistro Bethem several times. Their menu changes daily, but often times they have a steak on it. I think the food there is quite good. Not really a steak house, but it's better than Longhorn.

Fried Pickles

I think Southside has awesome fried pickles.

Kinkead's Hell point Seafood opens in Annapolis

We went to Hell Point Sunday night for dinner. First, it was not crowded -- about 6:30 p.m. The service was not great. Got menus right away -- but no waitress. Ordered bottle of wine and waited and waited. Finally got the bottle and then she took entire order -- apps and main course. I must say that the gnocchi appetizer was outstanding. Light and feathery with great, light sauce. The portion however was fairly small. Bread was good. Butter was soft and creamy.
For meals: Lobster roll was excellent. Loaded with fresh, perfectly cooked lobster. Close to some of the better ones we've had in New England. French fries were also good. I had pasta with clams and chorizo. The chorizo was rather hard, more like salami. However, the sauce, pasta and clams were very good. The wine list was small and not very impressive.

Overall it is not as good as Kinkead's in DC, but I would go back again.

pawleys island, murrells inlet sc - where to eat?

It was open this summer. I think it is not that great compared to some other places that are now open, but it does seem to still draw a crowd. Their shrimp and grits was probably one of the worst I've ever had. It was curdled! The rest of the stuff was average.

pawleys island, murrells inlet sc - where to eat?

There is a restaurant that opened last year called Twelve. It is in a strip center in Murrell's, on the left heading towards Myrtle. It is very good. The Asian Short Ribs were excellent and you have to try the friend peanut butter & Jelly sandwich. They also started a 10 for $10 menu, which I have not tried. Here is the link:

For a divey bar: You can go to Sundowner in Garden City. Drinks are cheap, music is loud and daily specials are good -- including wings. Lots of locals in here. They run football on Sundays as well.

Spent the night in Frederick and went here for dinner. Restaurant is in what appears to be an old row house with 3 different rooms. Seated very promptly. After that, service was slow and waitress kept apologizing that the kitchen was backed up. They were fairly full. Wine list is a little over priced. However, food was excllent to above average. Lobster Risotto appetizer was excellent and could have been a main course!! Main courses we tried: Lamb steak (very good) and a veal dish -- over pasta with asparagus and sun dried tomatoes (good, but not fabulous). Large portions, so we didn't have room for dessert.
Best thing all week - homemade apple dumplings at the Color Festival in Thurmont. Hot, drizzled with apple/caramel sauce and served with vanilla ice cream!

Myrtle Beach Hot Dogs

Agree if you want hole in the wall then go to Sam's Corner. There are several locations.

Mountain View Diner?

Stay away from Thurmont this weekend, unless you want to visit the 500 crafters that are there. This is the Catoctin Color Fest Weekend. If you are just going to check out breakfast I would suggest another time -- although I will note that there is some pretty good fair food if you are looking turkey legs, pit beef and fried snickers bars.

Acacia - Frederick, MD

Has anyone been and what do they think? Anything exceptionally good?

Myrtle Beach Hot Dogs

I agree that both Sam's and River City have good dogs (although I like River City's hamburgers better than their hot dogs). For a more upscale or perhaps dinner option, I would also suggest Carolina Road House and get their Killer Dog. It is a huge hotdog, covered with french fries, and then smothered with chili and cheese. I have never been able to finish one (I've actually brought one home then ate it for lunch for two days!!). Carolina Road House also has a great house salad, prime rib, fried shrimp. Can't go wrong with much of their food and it is very reasonably priced.

Jessup/Columbia - Sports Bar

Ended up at T-Bonz. Was fine for what we wanted. Most their appetizers were half price. The Old Bay wings were really good. Had lots of TVs and good atmosphere.

Best BBQ on between DC and Richmond

If you get off of 95 and take 301 into DC you can hit Johnny Boy's. They are excellent. It is near my home, so I eat there often. Everything is home made. It believe it is closed on Monday's. It is a rib shack with picnic tables, but they also have use of the building next door if the weather is bad. It is located in La Plata, MD. Here is a link to some reviews on Yelp:

Thanks so much.

First time in D.C., need help on picking a romantic seafood restaurant that wont break my wallet!

Not that I've noticed the smell. I think it does turn into some kind of dance place, but I wouldn't call it a disco. More like an upscale nightclub.

Paper Moon in Georgetown is classic Italian and not that expensive. I eat here probably once a month and the food is very good. The interior is also quite nice. Granted, this is not upscale dining but classic Italian, such as Veal Marsala, pasta carbonara and the like.
