Must Eats in PGH

Can I get an exposition on the new How Lee? It looks like it's been busy every time I've gone by lately. I am a huge fan of the Rose Tea Cafe just two doors down.

Best Thai Hole-In-Wall type places are Thai TYK near Edgewood and Smiling Banana Leaf in Highland Park

Italian
Gotta second Dinette and add La Cucina Dolce out in Monroeville for a real nice and fresh take on Italian with a seasonal menu. and the Verona Village Inn for huge portions of good food. Lydia's would combine your hankering for Italian and season menus.

Just moved to pittsburgh

To fill that sweet treat fix I can personally recommend the Oakmont bakery a little ways away from the city. Closer in, I've heard good things about Paddy Cake bakery on Liberty Ave and Dozen at a couple of locations around the city.

Some of the best clam chowder, in my opinion, can be had at Roland's in the Strip. As far as seafood, you might try out Mallorca on the South Side. Their seafood selections never fail to impress and there'll be something for the carnivores in the group as well. Italian, I would strongly recommend Dinette in East Liberty for some thin crust pizza goodness and Dish Osteria and Bar in the Southside.

Best Place for Devonshire Sandwich Pittsburgh

yes, the Union Grill has the best Turkey Devonshire's in the city. They are enormous and all of the ingredients are spectacular. You won't be thirsty afterwards, because they serve huge soft drinks as well.

Has anyone been to Hokkaido Buffet yet - pittsburgh?

I haven't been there, but I'd imagine since it's brand new they're probably still working out the kinks. For the best sushi buffet in the Pittsburgh area, take them down McKnight Road to the Sushi Deluxe Buffet up in the same strip mall as Best Buy. Great selection of sushi for only 20 bucks a person.

Pgh Restaurant Closings/Changes

I work right down the street from the Grant Street Mixstir's and it's a favorite standby for me. Their soups are all homemade and delicious. Their wraps are just so-so, but their panini's are fresh and tasty. I've never tried a salad there, though. Add on a smoothie and you've got a great and quick lunch. It can get packed on Fridays, but it's usually nice and empty during the week. I think for a quick counter lunch, there aren't many better places around.

Bubble Tea, where do I find it...

Green Mango Hut (both on Braddock in Regent Square and the new location in Monroeville) serve a handful of bubble tea flavors. Their coconut flavor is perfect to cool down a spicy meal.

Wilkinsburg

I've never heard a word come out of Wilkinsburg, good or bad. I live right up Penn from the main drag through and I'm constantly seeing these restaurants open and close. None of them seem to last longer than 6 months so I'd say approach with caution, but if your experience is positive, let us all know!

Pittsburgh - Asian Food

First off, welcome to the city! I'm sure you'll discover lots of delicious places hidden around. I wanted to second the recommendation for Smiling Banana Leaf in Highland Park, their Tofu Paradise with peanut sauce is one of the best thai experiences in the city. If you love the Pumpkin Curry from Thai TYK, you've definitely got to try their Panang and Massaman, I think they do the best curries in the city. For great cheap thai, there's Thai Me Up in the Southside. One of my favorite chinese restaurants is Pacific Ring in Squirrel Hill. They have got this spectacular Chicken and Wild Mushrooms dish and everything I've gotten from there has been really fresh and really tasty. They also do Dim Sum and All You Can Eat Sushi on the weekends. For some of the best sushi in town, there's Sushi Kim on Penn Avenue downtown. They also do an AYCE Korean BBQ upstairs on the weekends which is a fascinating exploration into indulgence and an experience I'd recommend if you've never done it. Enjoy!

The Noodle Hut, Pittsburgh, Regent Square

I agree on Smiling Banana Leaf and have to add Thai Tom Yun Kung (I know it's Thai TYK, but not sure abot the spelling) in Rankin. Tiny little hole in the wall place that I feel serves up the most flavorful and authentic Thai in the city.

Thai in Mt. Lebanon

I've been to both the Mt. Lebanon location and the North Hills Location in the past month and both meals were delicious. At Mt. Lebanon, I got the Singapore Rice Noodles which is a nice go-to dish for me at most chinese places and I asked for it extra spicy. Most chinese places refuse to add heat to their dishes, but the noodles were perfectly cooked with a real nice kick.

The second, more recent visit, was to the Sesam Inn in North Hills. We went on Christmas Eve and there were 5 of us. The service was atrocious due to the large, unexpected (on their part, not on ours) crowd of people. However, the food was delicious. We started off with their crab rangoon, which I think are some of the best in the city. Their hot and sour seafood soup for 2 is not like you'd expect with the brown, earthy colors and flavors of the traditional hot and sour, but rather more like an eggdrop seafood soup with a sour bite and a peppery kick. Quite different and really enjoyable. I ordered the pad thai, as I was in the mood for the spicy and peanut combination. I also asked for it extra spicy, but the waittress brought out their hot chili oil (read: fire sauce) to save the work in the kitchen. The noodles were cooked quite well, and while it lacked any sort of sauce, the lemongrass, bean sprouts, peanuts, and large chunks of both cooked egg and chicken blended quite nicely. I'm a big fan of Sesame Inn for affordable, family style dining and recommend it only slightly below Pacific Ring in Squirrel HIl.

'Burgh bakery recs for Anniversary celebration

I have to second Oakmont. Everything we've gotten from there (especially the Oakmonter which is an unholy union of cake, cheesecake, and fudge which redefinies decadent) has been delicious. If you're looking for fudge/chocolate I don't think they can do any wrong. We've also realy enjoyed their lady locks, carrot cake, and napoleons.

New Thai Pittsburgh

I wanted to echo the sentiments. I think I've been to pretty much every Thai place in Pittsburgh and the surround areas (Thai Cuisine, Thai Me Up, Spice Island, Thai TYK, etc. etc.) and I have to rank this in the top 3. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and kind, the food was extremely fresh and delicious, and most of all, they know how to make it SPICY. I asked for a 7 when I ordered and he laughed. He said, "I'll bring you a 3". It was perfect. The heat didn't stand out and was melded into the dish (simple Pad See Ew with chicken) exquisitely. Their Thom Kha is the smoothest I've ever had it, with some of the freshest vegetables inside. Also, you'd never know it from the outside, but the decor is extremely calm and relaxing. A beautiful place and second only to Thai TYK in Rankin, if only for the personalized attention.

Chowing Suggestions in PGH Please

right near PNC Park are a couple places I can recommend with confidence. For a really fantastic steak, Hyde Park is literally right there. They do great cuts of meat and their sides are delicious. Also if you want to rub elbows with the lesser-folk, check out Ugly's for a ridiculous amount of wing options and a pretty nice beer selection.

Corned Beef/Pastrami Sandwich in Pittsburgh

I totally agree about Corky and Lenny's. For a pretty good hot pastrami, I'd recommend Sammy's downtown, but that's just in between your trips to Cleveland.
