Crispy Chinese roast pork

Drool!!!!!

Japanese style hot dogs in Ctown: Fei Fan Eatery

I don't think Japadog is a regular American hot dog. I remember that one of them uses Kurobuta pork in the sausage.

The Super Duper Island Creek Oyster Bar

Wow, am so happy that I'll be dining there tomorrow evening. I can't wait, and seems that the lobster roe noodles is definitely the dish to order! Thanks OC for all the great reviews, really helpful for visitors like me!

4 day Bermuda Vacation--must visit restaurants

If you're staying out at the Southampton Princess, I'd suggest going around the corner to The Dining Room, its up at the lighthouse on Gibb's hill. Mainly Italian leaning with thin crust pizzas, I think pretty good value and the room is cozy and if you get a window table, it's got nice views being up on the hill.

A new discovery of mine, if you're sightseeing up at Dockyard's is The Pastry Shop, it's across from the visitor's centre. They do pastries and sandwiches and serve tea in the afternoon. It's a nice little afternoon break when the weather is nice, get a tall table and people watch. Service might get a little slow if they're packed.

Advice needed for Seaport daytime and evenings on town

Rats, last news I found seems to indicate an opening right after I leave, perhaps a soft opening?!?!

The more I think about it, I think my last night I'd like a great blow out meal. I've been looking at L'Espalier or Menton. Any thoughts? I've read reviews on both and they both seem really great.

Advice needed for Seaport daytime and evenings on town

Thanks for the tips about Mexican. There's a food I definitely don't get any of but having read some of the Chow reviews of Papagayo and Temezcal, it doesn't sound very promising. I'll keep an eye peeled for Rosa Mexicano's opening and see if any Chowhounds will TOFTT or perhaps I can although I have minimal experience with Mexican. :o)

I would love to get off the beaten path but I suspect this trip will have me at zero brain power. I generally try and avoid Legal Seafoods, mediocre experience for what I paid although a waterfront location might be enticing to wind down from the day.

Advice needed for Seaport daytime and evenings on town

Is Chinatown walkable from the Seaport Boston Convention Centre for an hour lunchtime?

Advice needed for Seaport daytime and evenings on town

Thanks very much for the tips! I suspect it'll be a tight lunch hour so having all these places nearby is great.

Is there any place in Chinatown you'd recommend that does good Chinese bbq for a simple bowl of noodles with bbq on top?

Advice needed for Seaport daytime and evenings on town

Hi Boston hounds,

I need some advice/thoughts on dining. I'm going to be in town from a Thursday afternoon to Monday morning but at a course all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The course is being held at the Convention Centre in the Seaport Area and I'll only have an hour for lunches. From trolling old threads, I've found: Sportello and Flour Bakery which seem near and are open weekends. Any other suggestions for lunches in the area?

As for dinners, I've already made reservations for Island Creek Oyster Bar (have been to Neptune and don't relish the wait) and also O Ya for Saturday night. 2 more dinners to go. I've been kicking around the following:

Myer and Chang
Clio/Uni
Pho Basil
Pho Pasteur

I'm an all budget point eater but I don't really want to travel too far from the Seaport area where I'm staying as I have really full/long days and I'll probably be brain dead by the end of each day. I'm probably aiming more for Asian leaning (as I don't get a lot of good Asian here at home in Bermuda) but am open to anything, maybe some place with amazing sweet breads would be nice too.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Bermuda Eating Trip Recap - long

Thanks for posting back, it's always great to get feedback and sounds like you had a lovely trip. Come again soon!

Ah, correct, I went with all ladies before so didn't take note of the dress code at Tucker's. Thanks for the tip!

Bermuda Eating Trip Recap - long

Shame but understandable. It was really the last bastion of the old school formal dining where men had to wear jackets at dinner the entire time. And therefore not surprising that they're changing it to casual dining given that not many guests carry a dinner jacket while on vacation anymore.

Back to Bermuda

Hi Dennis,

Check out the other thread that's going on Bermuda. It's easier than keeping 2 threads and one of the posters was also staying at Cambridge Beaches.

The Newport Room opens for special occasions still and I believe that in the summer, it opens up again for a couple nights per week. That's what they did last summer but not sure if the same will apply this year.

Athena should be able to comment on how the new chef at the Reefs is working out. Out that way, I rather like The Dining Room at Gibb's Hill Lighthouse, it's a cozy room with a nice view and the food is pretty good.

Hakkasan - new luxury Chinese restaurant in Midtown

So good to know that I can doggy bag at this branch, so over ordering won't be such a waste! Thanks for the reports back.

I was a bit sneaky with the pictures, just used my Blackberry (not the greatest quality) and turned off the flash so it looks like I'm just blissfully gauche checking e-mails while with dining companions. ;o)

Hakkasan - new luxury Chinese restaurant in Midtown

I always had the vague impression from trolling the UK board that doggy bagging isn't really that common, but I could be wrong. Liability issue?

Hakkasan - new luxury Chinese restaurant in Midtown

I've been super excited about it opening since I went to the one in London. And they have the dish that I tried and absolutely loved, which was the aubergine (eggplant), tofu and shitake mushroom hot pot. It was absolutely delicious, the tofu was nice and silken with a nice firmness in the skin without being greasy. The saucing was very delicate and not overly gloppy with cornstarch and the eggplant still retained some firmness to it instead of being cooked into a mush. When the waitress said they don't doggy bag, of all the dishes we had leftover, even though we were already full, we finished off every bite of that hot pot. *sigh*...hope the NYC one is going to be just as good as I remember.

Too late for good hot cross buns this year but maybe next?

Home made? Fortunate that Easter here in Bermuda has loads of options, all more bun/bread like. Topped with a cod fish cake and you've got yourself an island tradition! Happy easter GE!

Bermuda Eating Trip Recap - long

There's a new bbq joint opening on South Shore, by the gas station called Q's. Think it's just opening now.

64 degrees at Port Royal golf course is closing down.

There's some rumbling that the old Greg's Steakhouse in Hamilton is supposed to be opening as a Middle Eastern type resto. But no set date.

Tribe Road Kitchen is definitely worth a visit, corner of King and Reid St in Hamilton. Just be forewarned, it's not for the calorie conscious and they love mayo. The sandwiches are very filling and on Saturday morning, they do brunch starting from 10:30 or 11 with really great dishes. Their eggs benny with sausage on home made biscuits is so delicious.

Taste at 141 Front Street, closer to the BUEI side of Hamilton also opened up. Their truffle fries are very truffly if you like that. I find their menu to be hit and miss sometimes but have overall enjoyed it.

Smokin Barrel is a new bbq food truck located next to the Ferry terminal in Hamilton. I've not eaten there but the office folks all seem to like it and their hours are very generous.

Little Mexico is also a new food truck serving fresh Mexican offerings. She used to have a small stand at the weekend City Farmer's market. She's now located a little bit west of City Hall in Hamilton. She's fairly pricey for the portion size but I haven't been back in a while now. I love her fresh fruit juices/agua fresca and her salsa is very bright in flavours.

Seaside Grill opened as well, located on North Shore Road in Devonshire. A friend called their fish sandwich one of the best on the island but I've yet to make it there. Their claim to fame is using local fish. They do delivery, just not sure the extent of their delivery range. If you google them, I think you can find the new article of their opening and the menu is on the background of one of their pictures. Otherwise, if you're traveling by taxi, just call ahead and order and have your cab stop for a pickup.

Off the top of my head, that's all I remember at this time.

Slowly improving...when were you last here again?

Kits Happenings

In my ever brief fly through town, we hit Siena on a Friday night. No ressies taken, we called about 20 minutes ahead and they said they could probably take us. We got there and were confronted by a group of campers. Staff were super nice, gave our group a glass of champagne for our troubles. The food was definitely worth it (from what I remember, we had hit Todd's beforehand for wine and oysters so my buzz was very buzzworthy by this point). Overall everyone had a very nice meal. Nice room, friendly service, good food. But be prepared to wait with the no reservation policy on busy nights.

CSA - how many chowhounds use a CSA

Here in Bermuda, a local farm just started up a CSA program. For me, the up front payment is not a big deal, worked out to $20/week which in Bermuda is a bargain for fresh veggies. Yes, I have some wastage as the bag I get is pretty big for 2 people and yes, you are subject to whatever the farmer happens to have plenty of. And for me, growing up Asian, it definitely forced me to confront all sorts of veggies I've never seen (kohlrabi, rutabaga's, collard, kale). It pushed me to be creative and if I got lazy, there was always cottage pie to hide any offending items from picky eaters. I think it takes a certain type to be willing to be beholden to the farmer for their produce.

Having said that, I love my CSA. The veggies last longer and taste way better than anything that is imported onto the island. Our growing season is from October to May/June. I'm not sure how much it weighs but we get a little of everything. Winter squash weighs more than the baby lettuces so weight is not really an accurate gauge for our CSA. I drive about 20 minutes to get to the farm stand and they have meat and eggs too so it's nice to pick up other groceries as well.

Dim Sum? Yes, I know it is an often asked uestion

Sign me up for the port buns and vodka dumplings! Might make dim sum with the family even more entertaining and ridiculous than it already is. Bwa ha ha....

Trip to Bermuda, staying at Rosewood Tucker's Point

Thanks for taking the time to write a quick review. Glad you enjoyed the food at Tucker's and Wahoo's. I haven't been to Tom Moore's in over 6 years so can't say yeah or nay so glad to hear your thoughts.

Indian in Bermuda

Seconded. I've had Indian friends say it's excellent and comparable to good spots in NYC and London. My only note is that I find some of the sauces to run a bit on the sweeter side, having said that, I would gladly just drink the sauce anytime. I think they run an excellent lunch option, 16.95 lunch buffet serving about 6 different options including vegetarian dishes and a dessert.

There are a couple of different options for Indian. In town, there's East Meets West which offers a mix of different cuisines but are stronger in their Indian offerings (I think the chefs are maybe Sri Lankan or Indian). I find their curries to be less saucy and they also offer an excellent lunch option, offering a lunch special for 10.95 which includes rices, daal, naan and 2 selections of the day (one usually chicken and the other vegetables). The other option is Upper Crust, which again, offers a mix of cuisines and I find that they're not as good on the Indian cuisine front. But again, that's just my tastes.

Anyhooooo...hope you get a chance to try House of India one day.

Suggestions for Vancouver (downtown area) and Whistler

No thank you meghany for the Whistler recs. Gonna be there in a couple weeks and needed an update on what's good there these days. It's been 3 years since my last visit.

South Granville Eating

Thanks Fmed but I've probably got 2 dinners in Vancouver next trip around and it'll get spent with family most likely.

South Granville Eating

Yeah, sis lives in the building and was trying to get me to rearrange my ski schedule in March to coincide for a visit to Todd's. I think she said something about someone taking over the kitchen in the evening once a week and using it to test recipes. If you let them know in advance, they'll slot you in. For the life of me, I can't remember the guy's Chow handle but I think he'd know more about Todd's. Brain like sieve moment, have even tried trolling old posts to find it...argh...

Ten out of Ten

Man I remember the cows and the West 10th location so well. And the napkins with the slogan...something about the food you are wiping off your face is good. I miss the cows. So much so I have a cow spotted coffee mug with udders for feet. Nostalgia...

Haven't eaten at CC in ages having just about given up on chains since moving away. I did hit Milestones at Broadway and Cambie over my 4 day dash back at Xmas and was disappointed. The spinach and cheese (which I've been eating since West 4th was the only one) dip has changed and not in a good way. It had this strange unnnatural colour to it, which I commented to the waitress. Oh well, leave the country for 12 years and this is what you get.
