Paris - Speculoos Spread and cupcakes

thank you - am I correct in thinking Bercy is on the outskirts/suburbs? Was hoping to find it more central but if not I think I may have to go to Carrefours.
Thanks again

Paris - Speculoos Spread and cupcakes

Hi
Just wondering if any locals can point me as to where in Paris I can buy Speculoos spread - we are visiting in March and I want to stock up (we love it and can't get it in the UK). We are staying near Mouin Rouge so anywhere near there would be most helpful.

Also I write a cupcake blog and if anyone can recommend any places to get good cupcakes that would also be appreciated.

Thanks
Anne

San Antonio - Cupcakes/Bakeries

Hi
My husband is playing a festival in San Antonio next month and I'm coming to see him play. I write a blog on cupcakes so am looking to visit some good bakeries while there (doesn't have to be all cupcakes). Any recommendations gratefully accepted.

I am staying near the Riverwalk but plan to visit some of the malls as well and am happy to walk for a bit to get somewhere. I don't drive (Will be getting a taxi to the mall though!)

Recipe for Macaroni and Cheese Scotch Pie?

if you can't find lard then perhaps you could use trex? there's that English store in NY (sorry we've been to New York twice but never visted it) - not sure if they sell lard, or just nice English food!

Recipe for Macaroni and Cheese Scotch Pie?

Hi Kdka - I'm originally from Scotland and Macaroni Pies are the food I miss the most, and I stock up on loads when I visit my parents.

You are unlikely to find a recipe online - it's not really something we'd make at home, more likely to buy them from local bakers/supermarkets.

You are right that you'll need a water crust pastry case. I'd say cook the pastry blind, fill with your mac and cheese (to be authentic Scottish people would use fat macaroni not the thing stuff you see these days in England, oh and the cheese should be, if possible, Scottish cheddar, if not something orange (red leicester would be good) as it needs to have colour. Then cover with some grated cheese and heat through.

I would love to hear how you get on if you make them!

London - Best beer spots in central London

We went to Cask for the first time on Saturday and it definitely will not be the last. Good range of Oktoberfest beers on cask, along with a great range of real ales, a kriek (my favourite) and some ciders. No Fosters/Stella type of beers. Also a massive range of bottled beers including old favourites like Orval and some other more obscure ones and some good looking food.

I'd also recommend the Draught House, the Rake and the Wenlock (although not to everyones taste). We've also had some fabulous Belgian beers in Belgos!

Any "must get" food items that can travel back to States?

My friend lives in Chicago and we sent food/candy parcels throughout the year (halloween, christmas, birthdays, easter) and the one thing her and her husband always want is Percy Pigs from Marks and Spencer - they love them and end up fighting over them (I've started sending a bag each!)

I also get them things from Hotel Chocolat (for example the Halloween care package this year had some Tiddly Vampires chocolates), and she loved the Spotted Dick chocoalte I got her from Hope and Greenwood in Covent Garden. They are a treasure trove for old fashioned sweets that Americans seem to love (I sent some to another friend in Boston and she was v.impressed).

Finally, I love the childrens biscuits from Artisan Biscuits (http://www.artisanbiscuits.co.uk/two_...) available from Waitrose which adults and kids love. And as a Scottish girl I can't fail to mention Tunnocks Teacakes - another favourite when I send them!

Some places around Columbia Flower Market, Shoreditch/Tower Hamlets, London

You were luckier than us with Treacle - we went on Wednesday night and I'd bet good money our cupcake had been there since at least the Sunday before - it was as hard as a hocked puck, totally inedible and instead of brown like chocolate cupcakes should be it was grey.

Two places in Shoreditch, London

My husband and I went to the Albion on Wednesday for some food after a soggy late night's shopping at Columbia Road. I had fish and chips, with a side of mushy peas and he opted for steak and kidney pudding with a side of chips fried in beef dripping - and we shared a big brown betty of tea.
My fish and chips was fabulous - when you cut into the batter there was a satisfying crunch sound - the fish inside was moist and very well cooked. The chips were some of the best I tasted and the mushy peas were fabulous (I adore mushy peas and so rarely get good ones!). The tartare sauce was really nice as well and came in a lovely bird shaped container - very cute.
My husbands pudding was huge and very unlike those steak and kidney puddings you buy in shops - rather than being full of gravy his pudding was stuffed with melt in the mouth beef (reminded me of v.good salt beef from Katz in NY), the kidneys were just right with a hint of pink and he smothered it all in a side of gravy - he said it was one of the nicest things he ever ate!
The place is really nice and non-fancy and the service was great. It was slightly more than you'd pay for at a "caff" - however the food was outstanding and I'd highly recommend it!
We didn't have room for a pudding but took home a couple of cupcakes at 75p each for when we got home. I wouldn't bother again - the base was ok but the frosting tasted very much like pure butter. Next time I'd save my money and buy a loaf of their lovely own-made bread.

[London] Great British Beer Festival 09

Nanette - I go every year with my ale-drinking hubby and frequent the foreign beer bar. The range of American beers has gotten better over the years and I shall definitely be having a few myself on Friday when we go!
I know Kidtofu mentioned the ale shop in Twickenham (great shop btw) but Utobeer always has a good range of American beers too, although I do prefer the Ale Shop solely for service reasons!

Franco Manca - Underwhelming

we went on a Wednesday a couple of weeks ago about 2.30ish and we managed to get a seat straight away, was quite quiet. My pizza bianco was gorgeous and really helped my hangover. I recommend Rosies Deli round the corner for a nice coffee and a cupcake too

Baking supplies - London

Hi

Just wondering if anyone can help me - I want to find a store with lots of sprinkles, cupcake cases and if possible cupcake boxes as I have been asked to provide a number of cakes for a fundraiser and am hoping to find some unusual cases etc. I tend to get a lot of things via friends in the States but I need to get these in the next week or so - are there any good baking supply shops in London to visit? Thanks v.much

Anne

[London] Best brownies?

My husband is the brownie eater in our house - his favourites include Hummingbird (particularly their frosted brownie), Flour Power (although they are sometimes hit and miss) and Outsider Tart. I'd recommend trying the Hummingbird ones - I made a batch from their cookbook this weekend and they went down very well - very squishy and moist.

katz deli ? and where are best pancakes?

We went to NY last month on holiday and two of the best things we ate were a sandwich from Katz and banana and walnut pancakes from Clinton St. I highly recommend both - those pancakes were huge and I didn't eat anything else for the rest of the day- and even then my husband ate half for me!

Cupcakes in London?

The last time I went to Treacle the cakes were incredibly dry so I have decided to give them a miss! The ones at the Cakehole (a little bit down Columbia Road) were really flavoursome and moist though.

yum alert - mini cupcakes from Baked By Melissa in Soho

Like you we stumbled upon Baked By Melissa while on holiday in NY and shopping in Soho in early March. We also experienced a sugar rush but unfortunately not a good one - when we tried the cakes there was no taste to them - just sugar. The frosting we had was sugar and the cake base was flavourless bar again sugar.

I was totally disappointed - maybe we got a bad batch but I personally couldnt' eat more than the mouthful I had. My husband who has a way sweeter tooth than me tried 2 and agreed they were just tasteless sugary treats. We tried 8 different cupcake places in NY in 8 days and this was definitely the bottom of the pile!

London - whole/birthday cakes?

I'd second Hummingbird - their red velvet layer cake is fabulous!

Also Primrose Bakery (Primrose Hill or Covent Garden) have layer cakes available and I think Outsider Tart should be able to supply from their Soho kitchens - you can ring and check.

Cupcakes in London?

Angel Food Bakery is FAB - I really liked their vanilla and red velvet when I visited! Definitely worth the train to Brighton :)
I'd have to disagree that Hummingbird is second to Lola's though - I prefer Hummingbird for sure!

Cupcakes in London?

I had the same problem recently with Lola's from Selfridges, however when they're fresh from the bakery they are really different - moist cake and yummy frosting. I think its a pity they dont have their own store so people could try them properly!
