Parisian-style macarons/macaroons in the Triangle: A report
I have never had macarons in any other country, but I, too have been on a macaron quest for a few years.
Daisycakes - largest, most reasonably-priced macaron I've found, but only came in one flavor, which I could only identify as "pink," possibly strawberry? I enjoyed it.
Miel Bon Bons - I also ordered a large pink macaron with a raspberry on top, it was at least $5, and I was assured of its freshness. It did not taste fresh to me, I didn't even finish it.
Southern Season - I recently went there and ordered one of every flavor - to my surprise they tasted fresh and the flavors were good, especially the amaretto.
Guglhupf - on my last trip, I was tantalized by the many different colors/flavors of macarons on a tray, but I didn't purchase any. I know they supply macarons and other baked goods all over Durham/Chapel Hill/probably other places, so it didn't surprise me that they had so many. I will make it back there!
I also once enjoyed a macaron-studded dessert from Open Eye in Carrboro, it was obscene but so good - I think it was a passionfruit bombe/trifle dessert with multiple pink macarons stuck to it. Very decadent!
Blue Bell ice cream now in Raleigh/Cary
I picked up a half-gallon of Blue Bell pecan pralines 'n' cream at Lowe's. It was good, but I wasn't so impressed with the high fructose corn syrup. And I haven't bought a container of ice cream that large maybe ever!
Cooking classes at The Cookery in Durham, NC
I took a pizza making class at The Cookery and it was great - the people instructing us were very informative and fun, and afterward there was a huge variety of the best pizza I've ever tasted to sample. I did wonder what would happen if the weather was inclement - the noncooking portion of the class was outside, next to the building.
Best Frozen Yogurt in the Triangle?
Chill Bubble Tea on Franklin Street is closed. I was sad, but not surprised.
Li Ming's Global Market in Durham
Please report back after the bakery is open! My brother has long had access to a Chinese bakery in a suburb of Detroit, and we are very excited to have access to one here!
NY style deli opening soon in Chapel Hill
Was driving past post-lunchtime today, thought I'd stop in and grab a bowl of matzoh ball soup to-go for my husband, especially since they didn't have any when we went last time.
Silly me, of COURSE they don't have any soups on Sundays and only serve their brunch menu, even at 2pm! Shaking my head. I don't know that I have it in me to go back a THIRD time for matzoh ball soup. I'll just get the transcendent chicken noodle soup with matzoh balls ($11 for a big glass jar - expensive and worth it) at Steve's Deli, the next time I go visit my mother in MI.

Nostalgia, pure and simple. I grew up eating at restaurants like this, and I at least want to be able to purchase one bowl of matzo ball soup at a restaurant where I live, this has never happened in 18 years of NC residency (several wild goose chases to Raleigh over the years have proved fruitless) and I am willing to go back to make this happen. Although my husband just came back from work and said the more he thought about that fatty flavorless brisket sandwich, the more irritated he got at the manager's pat response of "that's New York Style." Maybe their breakfasts are better.

Ate there for lunch - today is the first day of the soft open. There were some small issues (no matzoh ball soup, should turkey on a grilled sandwich be fresh-from-the-fridge cold?, no napkin dispenser on the table, no bread plate, or option to purchase one on the menu that I could see.) None of these would keep us from going back, but my husband won't be ordering the brisket sandwich again - he found it too fatty and lacking in flavor. The manager said that was "New York style" but we've had brisket in New York (and as a descendant of NY Jews, I've been eating and cooking my mother's brisket my whole life) that was not like that at all.
Also, the potato pancakes were kind of raw in the middle, although the top and sides were perfectly golden brown and crunchy. It is hard to get large potato pancakes cooked all the way through, I know. Again, not a dealbreaker.
Baby Friendly Restaurant in Chapel Hill
Not to simply be contradictory (especially because I'm no fan of Tyler's - I don't drink beer and I don't need THAT much garlic in my life) but Tyler's has a children's menu, crayons for the table, and colorful plastic cups with lids and straws that they serve milk, water or juice in, for children. I don't know how much more they could do to become a spot for kids. I've eaten there with a party of several including toddlers and it adequately met everyone's needs.
NY style deli opening soon in Chapel Hill
thank you, Tom :-) I've lived in the Triangle for 18 years and there have always been tales of "this place in Raleigh" that never turns into anything, certainly never a bowl of matzoh ball soup! I have my fingers crossed that this place opens soon and we can get a good meal there.
NY style deli opening soon in Chapel Hill
omg, they misspell delicatessen EVERYWHERE. On their facebook page, in every instance on their website. I should really let this go, but I've never seen anyone misspell the name of their own business quite so many times before.

I am going to try and overlook that they misspell "delicatessen" several times on their website and hopehopehope that this happens and I can take my husband out for a bowl of matzo ball soup somewhere local and SOON.
Crepes Truck, Carrboro NC
Sandwhich hasn't moved. At least not according to their blog, they haven't.
Jewish Deli-Triangle Area ??
I'm not from NY - I'm from Michigan. I'd like a Michigan deli!
Chapel Hill: Jade Palace
hey, a thread from 2003!
Has anyone noticed a severe downturn in quality of the food at Jade Palace? I've been getting takeout and eating in for about fifteen years, and it very recently has become much worse. The doughy steamed dumplings we love have been replaced, the won ton soup suddenly has no flavor, and cabbage has become much more prevalent than other vegetables in the entrees. I would rather pay higher prices and keep the food the way it was, I assume this is from economic necessity. Too bad, we won't be going back.
Alivia's in Durham: Never again
we had the same experience a few months ago. I couldn't get over the sticky tables, and our food (and the dirty silverware) was really sad also.
Jewish Deli-Triangle Area ??
we waited so long to try From NY With Love (no reason to go to Raleigh, usually) that both locations seem to be closed. The website is now generic and the phone numbers don't work. Dang.
Durham, NC: Any news on old Pao Lim/new Kimono restaurant?
I'll miss the chili chicken and corn soup.
New Kosher Option in NC
of course!
although my husband and baby would probably miss me :-)
Jewish Deli-Triangle Area ??
when I first moved here, people heard my obviously-Jewish surname and kept asking me if I was "from New York."
it took me a while to figure out what that meant. There aren't *that* many Jews here.
Durham Alivia's Bistro
I had to add my thoughts to this old thread - we ended up at Alivia's last Sunday out of desperation (it was foolish to go out looking for lunch at 4pm on Sunday, we know that) - there were so many things wrong, it was comical. Sticky, sticky tables. Filthy plates. Bad hot drinks. Flies everywhere. Distracted service. Lettuce that had seen much better days in a salad.
Despite all this, the food was pretty good. But everything else was so bad (and my elbows were sticking to the table, which needed to be re-finished - water wouldn't wipe off that stick) that we will never return.
Cheap, Casual, Healthy Lunch Place in Chapel Hill?
not discussing the quality-for-price issue, Sandwhich ain't cheap. I paid $9.60 for my blt with avocado today. I skipped a drink because I really did not want to spend more than ten bucks on lunch.
PIZZA! In Chapel Hill or Durham
I have to speak up and say that since Pepper's changed locations, it is too horribly loud to go. The acoustics are horrible - the music coming from the kitchen is always turned up to eleven, and even without music the diners' conversation bounces off the ceiling and walls, LOUDLY. I'll only get takeout from now on.
Flying Burrito re-opening?
There is no website - heck, until now, they had to re-copy the menu by hand every night!
Flying Burrito re-opening?
It's open! I've been there twice - the first time I had a flying chicken, the second time a "small plate" with two crispy fish tacos. The first tasted pretty much like what I was used to as a longtime FB customer, the second was new, and good.
I was disappointed that the first visit's flour tortilla chips weren't repeated on the second trip. Their chips were always a lowlight and I thought that the addition of flour chips in the basket was fun.
What's New in Chapel Hill?
i'll chime in - egg salad and corned beef were great. Corned beef was very fatty, if you don't mind it that way. I trimmed off the fat myself and enjoyed it more.
What's New in Chapel Hill?
I know the bubble tea place (Chill) is still open, because I just got one two days ago. Not everyone thinks bubble tea is absolutely disgusting.
