Tampa: Any good gourmet chocolate stores?

Yeah, that's the place I was talking about.

Philly: parents meet parents - help?

Someone may flame me for this, but as long as you are up to walking down stairs, La Buca at 7th and Locust fits the bill.

Bartender etiquette

What has generally happened to me when seated at the bar is that if I pay with a large bill the change stays on the tender's side so that when I want another drink he just takes it from that pile. Of course you weren't seated at the bar it seems so you should have just reached out and grabbed your change. Forget being rude.

Cuba Libre Brunch...What to order, what to stay away from?

For the brunch, get the skirt steak. Best thing on the menu. The Churros and hot chocolate are a nice calming dessert on a cool day, but tough to share.

Tipping: Settle this for me once and for all PLEASE

If the service is that bad and the manager doesn't realize it, then they are just as bad a manager.

Most memorable cooking disaster?

My rbother and I as kids decided to make homemade pasta. Made a mess as expected, but spent all day and made some wonderful spaghetti.

After it was all perfectly sliced and perfect we decided to clean and start making dinner for when my dad got home as a nice suprise

So we put the freshly made pasta in a pot of water since that's where it'll go anyway.

No, not boiling water, just regular water where it sat for half an hour waiting for my dad to arrive.

Yes, that lovely glob of goo was worth the day making it. I don't think my brother and I have tried making pasta since that date 15 years ago....maybe this weekend.

Travelling solo to Tampa Area

Just a note, Lee Roy's has scaled down their menu immensely over the past month as Outback plans to take them national and according to a lcoal server "needs to be able to make everything on the menu the same at every location". I was pissed because they no longer serve corn bread pudding or the sweet potato (although sometimes they still have the potato). Still have to go for the Smoking Tampa Tea, Grape Crush, and the Pulled Pork Sandwich though.

Any Recs for St Augustine

Hey everyone,

After some research on the board I made reservations for Opus 39 for Sturday night for our special dinner. Unfortunately, I have to eat a bunch of other times during the coming weekend. Any recommendations for lunch or dinner on other nights. Good and local is what I'm looking for.

Thanks.

i want a tomato/moz sandwich on superbly crusty bread!

Just go to Campo's on Market between 2nd and 3rd and get the seeded roll. Tell them what you want and you're good to go.

Dinner at La Croix last week

Did you talk to Eric the sommelier about the wines first? He's always been so friendly to me and definately gave us a great pour on each of the wines we ordered?

Dinner at La Croix last week

Is this a new thing?? The last time i went (last Christmas) it was amazing. At the time it was my favorite restaurant in Philly and the best place for a special night out. Did something change?

I made a peach pie in Sacto

When making fruit pies I always precook my filling and precook my bottom crust. I then put them together and bake unitl the top crust or lattice are cooked....or you can do what my dad always did and make the filling alone and bake up some crust rounds....basically little round crusts about 6 inches in diameter and serve the hot filling with a hot crust. Good stuff.

How can you tell if an egg has gone bad?

There are 3 types. Sink is good, stand on end or half floats is okay, totally floats is bad.

Kielbasa and Kraut

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to make a simple Kielbasa and Kraut that tastes really good without much work. I did it a year or so ago following a viewing of 30 minute meals (i know, blasphemy, but its a guilty pleasure) and it was really good, but I don't remember if there was anything to it except butter and kraut and kielbasa.

Any suggestions are much appreciated...but no fruit please (I would love it, but my wife is weird and won't eat fruit and meat - crazy wife)

Any Chowhound-worthy places in North Pinellas or Pasco counties?

You can try Pizza Mania on BBD and 56. Don't be afraid of the name. I was for so long and i completely regret it. not only do they make the best pizza in the state, but their pasta is awesome and their other stuff is excellent too.

Whole Wheat pasta?

I've tried the Dreamfields stuff and its pretty good. I can still tell the difference...but not by much. It definately keeps the tooth.

Very casual — Philadelphia

Try Campo's at 2nd and Market. You can get a great hoagie and it will be very casual...and very good.

nice, stable site with tons of features. too bad it's not as much fun as the old chowhound.

I think that what steveh is getting at is that while the new chowhound is loads better in terms of everything technical, it doesn't have that same community feel that the old chowhound had. It now feels like your basic reader response site and has lost the focus on the chow.

The old was like your best friend from elementary school who you've grown up with and are now middle aged with. He's ugly, offensive, a free loader, and all around social mess...but he's your buddy and you'll still talk to him almost every day.

The new is like your new girlfriend. She's hot as heck and has curves in the all the right places....but she's just not your buddy. Not at all. Just my 2 cents.

What are your personal faves in the Tampa/St Pete/Clearwater area?

Since most of these are in South Tampa and St. Pete, I figured that I'd bring it up north....

Thai: Thai Orchid - On Cross Creek near Hunters Green. Good stuff

Sushi: Sushi Ko - Opened fairly recently on BBD near I-75 in the shopping center with the Boston Market and such across from the Krispy Kreme and LeRoy Selmons

Pizza: Pizza Mania - BBD and RT 56. Don't be fooled by the cheesiness of the name. Such goodness and their pasta is pretty good as well.

On a side note, OysterCatchers has the best crabcakes in Florida bar-none. The other stuff on their menu has been hit or miss for me. However, my wife loves being able to get a piece of fish simply prepared with the sauces on the side.
