San Fran for 2 nights- Single diner dilemma
Fellow Hounds,
I am a NY hound heading to San Fran for 2 days/2 nights this summer by myself. Been searching the boards and doing my research as I'd like to have 2 fabulous dinners while I'm there. I would like to do one top-number tasting menu that doesnt exceed 125/150 (not including wine) and one a la carte great restaurant. As for that second restaurant i am leaning toward SPQR, Boulevard, Absinthe. As to the first restaurant, I made a reservation at Atelier Crenn but got the feeling it might not be the best place for a solo diner, who would prefer to sit at the bar.
Other restos I'm considering are Ame, Coi, Outerlands, Park Tavern and maybe Maven but I'm not sure. Ill probably steer clear of thai, chinese, japanese, indian.
Im not sure when I'll get back to san francisco so I want to make it count. I really appreciate all of your suggestions.

Anyone been? Just read a great review via paris by mouth. does anyone know if they take reservations? i just called and the person i spoke with seemed relatively confused by request. i ask because they are open saturday nights as i continue my quest to find someone open late on saturday evenings.

SO you would think a repeat of le cinq lunch over a first time at gagnaire lunch?
totally agree re: the last nights dinner but we have the ballet until about 1030. Given that its a saturday night we are extremely limited. any other suggestions on where we could possibly go?

Hi all,
Have been posting a bunch the past few weeks and reading even more. Your insights are indispensable as we plan our 3rd trip to france. We will be spening 4 nights in the Loire valley, which i am pretty sure we have figured out. its paris that we never seem to have enough time in. Here is our proposed schedule. your thoughts are MUCH appreciated. we have tried not to schedule 2 set meals a day, as we love the experience of pastries for lunch and wine in the middle of the day. that said, here goes.
first night- chez l'ami jean. our favorite place on earth. non-negotiable.
second day 4pm- Spring restaurant wine tasting. apparently wines are paired with tastes from the kitchen/cheese. has anyone been?
second night- EITHER Agape Substance or Septime. we are having a very hard time deciding.
Third day- MAYBE lunch at Pierre Gagnaire (we wanted to do this the next day, saturday, but they are closed. ate in his restaurant in vegas and were floored by the food and service)
third night- EITHER Jadis, Le Quincy or Spring. We had wanted Frenchie but depsite a ridiculous amount of calls, no one answered the phone. we were told to just go there when we get to paris. Thoughts?
Fourth day- MAYBE lunch at le Cinq (this depends on whether we go to Gaganire. 2/3 of us have already had the le cinq lunch and loved it. worth it to skip gagnaire and do it again??)
Fourth Night- First is the Ballet. then because of our limited options (saturday night at 11pm) we are deciding between Alcazar (recomended by Alec Lobrando) and Allard (which we have always enjoyed).
Please let us know what you think of our options. We appreciate it and promise to report back!

Has anyone done the spring wine tastings in their wine cellar? Sounds like it could be great fun and was wondering if anyone had any input...

Anyone been to Mille Feuille Bakery-Cafe in the village?
I was totally underwhelmed at bosie. i tried their macarons twice, both times letting them come to room temp and both times i felt the macs themselves crumbled instead of shattered (if that makes sense) and were lacking in the filling. then again, i am in the pierre herme camp and enjoy a good filling in my macarons. overall, i wouldnt recommend bosie- i think both bouchon and the macaron cafe are better. I am just waiting with bated breath for laduree now.

Tragically, Laduree has moved its opening day from today to August 26. My birthday is tomorrow and my mom and i were looking forward to starting off our day with some macarons and coffee. Any idea for a subsitute? i am thinking we should just go to patisserie claude for croissants. We dont want anything heavy as we are having a big lunch. I live in the west village and have tried bosie tea parlor and found it very disappointing (twice!). any ideas for where we can go instead?

Hello,
Any suggestions for late night dining after the ballet at le Garnier? We dont mind if its a cab ride away- as we'll be staying in the 6th anyway. Its on a saturday night- not sure if that open or closes doors for late night dining...

thanks, Rio. after reading your pierre gagnaire report, i was interested to see what you had to say. my parents just ate at his new place in vgas and had the meal of their lives. Also befriended the maitre d who said we must go in paris so it is at the top of our list. there are no prices on his website, if you dont mind my asking- what are the prices of dinner, and if you know, lunch?

Am thankfully heading back to paris in the fall (3rd time!) and besdies CAJ (which i dream about year round) we want to try some new spots. I just read about Da Mimmo and while italian in france makes little sense to me, it got a rave. Anyone been? thoughts? worth 1/4 night dinner?
Also was looking into Market JGV's restaurant. I havent seen it get much play on the boards but i am a lover of his new york restaurants. thoughts?

Pre-rockettes i would say the bar room at the modern is the prime choice.
Best restaurant bars for drinks
agree on ABC kitchen, the modern, and employees only. Also try Bobo which has a great bar area nice cocktains and a good bar menu. Ward3 in tribeca, for their cocktails alone is also a good option. you could also try kingswood but beware of over crowding

Paris Report - Day by Day
the olive bread at kaiser is out of this world. We ate at least 2 in our 6 day trip.
Macarons in Paris
had a similiar experience at LaDuree on rue bonaparte. My very first LaDuree macaron was their caramel. The oustide completely crumbled while the filling was chewy and hard. it originally turned me off to their macarons completely. Another try, and rose this time, changed my mind. But i definately stick to the macarons with the "fluffier" fillings there now.

Has anyone been to Le comptoir since it stopped taking reservations? Is it still offering the 50E menu each night? or is it all a la carte?

thats an interesting take mangeur. its sounds like an "easy dining" place, which is something i really do enjoy. truth be told, i am holding out for a cancelation at spring that evening.

skeptical of ZKG because of the price of dinner compared with a bit of uneven reviews from this board. I am interested to try fables as the past 2 times we've been in paris on a sunday we've done la petite chaise. i think at this point allard is moving into the monday position.

unfortunately NONE of our choices are monday pics. We've been to le Gaigne and are skeptical of Ze Kitchen. We could move fables to monday and do allard sunday....

Haha. No, unfortunately. We need to narrow as i doubt we will have more than one sit down lunch, which while we are on the topic may be Joel Roubachon (we have already done le cinq).
I think our ideal line up is CAJ Regalde Fables Spring and Frenchie but because of closing sat-mon, and our semi last mnute booking with regard to frenchie and spring, we need backups!
