Our 1st time in Paris!! Want to do it right!!

old style bistros we love: Paul Bert (for steak/frites), Pyrenees-Cevenne in the 11th.

Would also recommend Cafe Constant in the 7th.

Not sure the tres expensive places are worth the money, up to you.

La Regalade in the 1st is also good and reasonably priced.

Beaune & Paris Itinerary - Any Comments Appreciated! :)

If you're in Paris in late August, try Auberge Pyrennes-Cevennes. We love Paul Bert too and have the same problem you do as we are going to Paris and Beaune in August

Paris restaurants in August

We will be there for over a week and I'd love recommendations. Am booking Chez Grenouille, Cantine du Troquet, Le Tournebievre and would welcome opinions as well as suggestions for other affordable places.

Les Papilles- does it make the cut?

We were not at all impressed by Les Papilles, but were thrilled by the dinner at Spring and had fabulous bistro meals at Paul Bert and at Auberge Pyrenenes Cevennes. Just to add to your confusion.

Paris - Les Papilles vs. La Moustache

We, too, weren't blown away by Papilles. We just had fabulous bistro meals at Auberge Pyrenees Cevennes and Bistro Paul Bert. Of the newer type places, Spring dazzled.

Hi,

I understand your response, but somehow chowhound edited what I was writing so I didn't get to clarify my question. But you put me in my place and I stand, very full and fatter, corrected, and appreciate it.

Paris Report on eating

Le Jadin and Cerisae were okay. We weren't excited by the small size and lack of excitement. Some things were fine, others less so. After these two, we went bistro, first to Bistro Paul Bert, which was totally wonderful. The setting, liveliness, atmosphere and staff were welcoming. We got the blackboard menu of well-seasoned steak au poivre, delicious fries and were delighted with everything. Would highly recommend this meal and it's under 50e. The egg with morel appetizer is fabulous.

Next night we went to Auberge Pyrenees Cevennes in the 11th, another very affordable bistro that's been around for ages, changed hands some years ago and is as good as ever. The salade paysanne with foie gras made me happy. The cassoulet is as good as can be. My husband had the steak with salt, enormous and so taste. The tarte tatin was excellent.

Our blow-out was at Spring. We had the paired menu, which raises the cost, but it was perfect. The restaurant is casual in feel, but the food is skillfully prepared. Service is lovely as they don't make a fuss, but deliver. The chefs are in the center of the restaurant, happily preparing the meal. We were thrilled.

someone who's been, please help

You've all been so helpful and maybe now you'll understand my issue. I bought Roland Almejitas Humadas (smoked baby clams), Pay Pay Mejilones en Escabeche (picture looks like musself), Pay Pay Berberechos (Elaborado en las Rias Gallegas al natural) and Orbe Nvajas Al Natural (razor shells in brine). Also got a tin of sardines and one of pickled mussels. Do I want the ca l'espinalea sauce for these? Quimet & Quimet was crowded so this was the back-up as I wanted to see what's the deal with tinned fish. Ideas?

Tell me which restaurants you want more detailed reports on and I'll try to do that. Ciutat Contal and its partner, Cerveceria Catalana (same food, more contemporary setting) have excellent tapas. Can't miss on the french fries with some kind of sauce and fried eggs mixed in. Wasn't thrilled with Tavera Catalunya, where had an ok paella. Place is too expensive and not so fabulous. Am I supposed to go back to the French board? Ok, I will. I'm behold to you all.

Hi Erica,

I'm sorry you all feel short-changed, but I do mosaic art and have some pieces that have been commissioned so no time to play. If I get caught up, I'll try to reciprocate. Meanwhile. I'd be happy to have you look at my web site (www.sybilsage.com) and you'll understand what's taking all my time. Thanks mucho.

Thank you. I don't know if the quality of the canned fish we bought (in a store near the boqueria) will match that of Quimet, but I'm hoping we'll pull something off. Thanks for being so prescient & helpful.

oops, what would I be responding to on the French board, but I'm sure you've got the right person as we just returned from Barcelona and Paris. Yes, it was Quimet et Quimet I was asking about, but somehow the restaurant's name got lost.

To repay those who are helping, I would recommend Cerveceria Cataluna along with Ciutad Contal in Barcelona. And in Paris, we loved Spring, bistro Paul Bert and Auberge Pyrenees Cevennes. Have I redeemed myself?

Can I get this sauce in NYC?

We tried to get in and couldn't so bought tins of fish at the Boqueria. Is there something they do or add to the fish (sauces, etc?) or do we just eat it straight?

Viking stove oven problems??

We just replaced the starter (yet again) on the range we bought in 1993. When I contacted Viking to say they should alert customers that one of the parts will require being replaced as it isn't designed to last the life of the range, they refused to let me speak to someone with executive authority and kept repeating that they're sorry, but they can't warranty something for more than a year. I suggested they look at this thread and was told that they have. Talk about not caring about your brand or customer reactions. Can we do a class action suit? I just spent $500 for the starter and was told it will go out again.

best tapas in manhattan

A terrific tapas place. Friendly, efficient service. Delicious tapas. Paella had its own twist as it was well seasoned, had chick peas and was moist.

We were very happy with everything and recommend it, including the Can Blau wine.

Lyon

Four of us had dinner there tonight, found the place as adorable as the food was disappointing. I thought the review was generous. We would not have given it a star. What they call onion soup is tasty, but it's filled with brisket and is like meat gravy. The baguette that accompanies it was badly seasoned. Appetizer hot dog was steamed or boiled, not as good as Grey's Papaya.

Mussels were okay. The lamb shank was not seasoned well and the beans weren't properly cooked. Fries were fine. The charcuterie plate had a variety of pates, only one of which I liked, which was the Lyon sausage. It's accompanied by small pickled things that aren't worth fishing out of the plate. Steak tartare was nowhere nearly as good as the one at L'Express; it was ok, but not a dish you'd want again.

Desserts were equally poor. We had the pots de creme, described as chocolate and coffee. In fact, what came was a small portion of pudding made with both, dry, with two brittle, tasteless, white cookies.

We'd read the review and assumed they would have made some improvements but, in fact, felt the food was worse than what had been described. It's cramped, but that would not be a problem if all else had been fine. As we were leaving, we were asked several times if we'd enjoyed the meal and gave a perfunctory answer, but if they didn't work out the kinds after the review, our lack of enthusiasm will surely change nothing.

In a part of town with so many excellent restaurants, it's hard to understand why the place was full - and it was.

I'd suggest Convivio or Hearth, both being terrific, downtown and special. I'm not a fan of Craft or Blue Hill, having found both disappointing.
