Ruby Red Grapefruit Granita!!! Couldn't be easier and with fresh tarragon from the garden it's a hit.....would love to give credit but I honestly can't remember who posted it.....but Thank You!
Bakery that makes authentic petit fours
I know this is NOT Toronto, and I admit the reference is dated!!! Having said that, a few years ago I managed to pick up some petit fours at La Sem...an italian place on Eglinton in Mississauga.....
Jupiter to WPB - the hit list
Thank you for adding to the original post all! Coolinary Cafe has made it's way on to my hit list too!
Have now had the pleasure of visiting Leftover's and had the sweet potato crusted fish - excellent!
Also had the lobster fried rice special at Talay Thai and it was delicious as suggested by other posters.
Time is running out and the list is still so long! Another year perhaps......
Mid season update - Juno, NPB
Let me say that we have a long list and are working our way through our "hit list"!
Here's what we can report so far:
Pita Grille - a standby that we love.....between the lamb shank and the ahi tuna, we love the place.
Kee Grill - very good - enjoyed our fish specials (sorry details escape me as it was weeks ago)
La Scaletta - newly opened and it was a disappointment - service was poor (waitress apologizing for the new guy in the kitchen among other things) - and 1 out of 4 dishes was really not edible. Given that it is very new, we might have given it a second shot but there are others on the list and it simply was not good enough from the get go
County Line Pizza - we had a delicious thin crust pizza here
Brass Ring Pub - wanted to try the burgers - they were good but mine had to go back as it was not well done as requested, so a bit of a turnoff
Bentley's - although we have never been for dinner we have been twice for breakfast and love the sourdough toast
Talay Thai - it was a busy night when we decided to drop in for a dinner so we ate at the bar...lobster fried rice special and the sweet and sour chicken - both excellent
Crazy Cuban - has the best chcken tortilla soup - delicious!!
Gyromania - Crystal Tree plaza - excellent chicken gyro but even better almond cookies - yum
Top of the list now is Leftover's!!
Jupiter to WPB - the hit list
Thanks Freaker.....I knew I could count on your reply. Forgot to mention a Thai recommend. I believe you're a fan of Talay Thai - is that the best bet?
We are also pho lovers, although not quite as appealing in hot weather! Vietnamese Express Cafe has been touted I believe....Thanks again!!
Jupiter to WPB - the hit list
We have the good fortune to be back in this area for a few weeks. So last year we tried the following - in no particular order!
1) Food Shack - loved the food and the vibe for lunch....felt it might not be so great for dinner as you may feel pressured due to lineups.
2) Season's 52 - chain that does better than most. Had been in Orlando before so no surprise and consistent - very good
3) Hurricane Cafe - decent breakfast but lineup on the weekend
4) Cafe Sole - excellent wraps and pizza for lighter fare
5) Hogsnappers - we had a great meal here - believe it was the whole hogfish dinner
6) Anthony's coal Fired Pizza - as I remember it was good!
7) Jupiter Island Grill - as I recall we landed in on an evening when we were not very hungry so can't make a comment, but may make a return visit
8) Pita Grille - returned more than once and enjoyed every time...will return this year although I understand it has changed owners.
And likely a couple more that don't come to mind right now....
So who/what/where do we put on the hit list for this year? Looking for any type of cuisine as well. We would love to find a great local Italian, non-chain restaurant. We are willing to drive and we are not early diners! Suggestions would be appreciated!! TIA
Where to buy fresh turkey in/near Barrie
Try calling Country Produce in Orillia....I don't know if it's too late or not, but a friend ordered a 24 pounder there this year.....
WHERE to BUY Ceramic/Appetizer Spoons???(Toronto)
You can get them at Pier 1 as well.....but they come in a box set with a serving tray....
Where to find a Turkish teapot in Toronto?
I was just in Teaopia (the chain) and was surprised to see they sell the yerba mate tea cup there along with the tea.....so you might find the nearest one and try there.....
New to Barrie, seeking advice on where to (and not to) eat...
As relative newcomers as well, we are working our way through various eating establishments in Barrie. We just discovered Com Pho Asia and second it - we love pho. Nobody has any recs for Chinese here....and we don't care for Indian. We do go to Mango Thai for laksa soup - yum! As for fine dining, we have tried and recommend Crazy Fox (happen to love their fish dishes), Painter's Hall (service could have been better) and North (oh so creative and good, but pricey). A couple on our "hit list" are Groovy Tuesday and Shirley's Bayside, so can't comment as yet. Almost forgot that we had a delicious dinner at Gio's - Italian food in an intimate setting.
To satisfy our craving for wings and beer we hit Wild Wing (chain in the south end)...
We have yet to try Era67 in Orillia, but certainly Sixteen Front in Orillia is worth a visit, as is Country Produce for specialty shopping - with fresh seafood, meats, veggies, baked goods, and lots of gourmet goodies. I wish they'd open up in Barrie! Oh, and one last find is The Lemon Tree bakery on St Vincent....would love your comments as you eat your way around the city!!
Trying to locate Nancy's
I'm looking for a frozen appetizer......they are pinwheels or Deli Spirals by Nancy's. Have bought them in the U.S. and used to see them at Sam's Club in Canada.....has anyone seen them locally?
Jupiter - What are the great restaurants in this area?
From our experience last year....
The Food Shack
Hogsnapper
The Kee
Guanabanas - for drinks
Hurricane cafe - breakfast
Anthony's on PGA- for bar food
Pita Grille - but it has changed hands apparently
Cafe Sole - wraps/pizza

Cooking for One: A Widow's Challenge
Lots of advice here on cooking for one ...but I think the crux of the matter was stated somewhere down the line....it's not really the "cooking for one" as much as the "eating alone" that is the toughest adjustment. So invite a good friend or friends to dinner often......having two couples at a time is easier because you get "help" in the kitchen and can leave the rest to converse without it feeling awkward. If you BBQ you can let the guys do the cooking outside with a drink in hand while you do the rest. Other times just invite someone you know who will love your bacon and eggs for dinner, just for the company and time together. Once motivated to cook for others you may find that you will begin to enjoy preparing healthy meals for yourself once again.
Muskoka, Honey Harbour, Bala, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Midland Areas...need help!
Here are some recs for you as well as a vote for some already mentioned!
Bala. Moon River Lookout - have not been for a year, but it was very good prior to that. You should visit Don's Bakery for scones (they aren't a real scone, more like a bun, but it you are into peameal bacon - these are great for that, or just toasted. Don't forget to get a number at Don's when you get in the lineup for these! I would second the vote for Rebecca's just east of Bala - very good food.
Gravenhurst. I also second the vote for North, although expensive, good food. The Farmer's Market is on Wednesday morning - can be busy. Visit "Taste" more toward downtown for Kawartha ice cream cones that are huge - a kid size cone is enough!
Severn - Rawley Lodge - have only been for lunch but it's a lovely setting and good food.
Bracebridge - Second the vote for Griffin Pub - great beers (micros) and good food - not just the usual pub fare! For diner type lunch - good breakfast/burgers/sandwiches and fries go to Fresh Kutz. Riverwalk is indeed good but priced like some of the ones I mention above,
Enjoy!

Thai Restaurants in the 905 area
As it happens we went to Thai Bamboo today simply because we were in that area and looking for a quick Thai lunch. At 1:30 the place was full. The food was a pleasant surprise.....I would echo the comments above - not heavily sauced, crisp, fresh veggies and served steaming hot. The cold fresh spring rolls were excellent. We considered ourselves luck to stumble on the place!

Best restaurant in Mississauga
I agree re Chezanne. The prix fixe lunch was perfect with quiche and salad, tarte tatin a la mode and a glass of wine for $18. Service was excellent and we heard about the plans for a patio - IF ever there is a summer here!!!
Brunch/breakfast in Jupiter or surrounding area
You could try the Hurricane Cafe....always a line up but moves quickly and you'll enjoy the breakfast!!
Breakfast in Palm Beach Garden area
Hurricane Cafe is very popular....we've only been one time and it was very good......
West Palm to Jupiter
Thanks.....your suggestions have been pocketed for another day due to logistics. We actually ended up at Carmines Gourment Market to browse and subsequently we ended up having lunch there on the patio overlooking the marina. It was a case of timing, but quite lovely actually. The store itself is ian mpressive enterprise! Lunch was quite good - 2 sandwiches - we should have shared one. We split the key lime pie, which we enjoyed. Came away with a few treat for dessert for this evening and some were excellent, some okay. So....Guanabanas is still on the list! Thanks again...
West Palm to Jupiter
Looking for a great lunch spot....can be any food type, but casual, perhaps waterfront. A nice place to meet an old friend for a glass of wine and lunch, so not too bustling or loud...we want to linger!
On a side note....any good bakeries in this area?
Thx!!

Help with a summer menu, need suggestion for a side
Now that summer squash is once again available, I'm doing a Vegetable Tian from the "for the love of cooking blog" . It went over very well last summer!
Ontario Recipes?
How about the Laura Secord Canadian Cookbook? Likely available at the cookbook store...or on line somewhere!
Best restaurant in Buenos Aires- La Cabrera
We had dinner at La Cabrera within the last few days as well, and although the tenderloin (we shared the thyme seasoned tenderloin) was done to perfection and delicious, we were not as crazy about the sides. A lot of little dishes that we thought could be more flavourful - some of which could be left out altogether. Our service was not attentive, nor amiable, but rather quick and non communicative. We were SO looking forward to this dinner and although I would go back (perhaps on a weekday night), it was somewhat disappointing.
I would say that our dinner at Lo de Jesus was excellent....anyone else been there? We loved our great big plate of grilled veg as a side, but the beef too was done just to our taste. A lot less commotion so perhaps more our style? Service was excellent. We will likely return here....
Elegant desert needed - Grand Marnier Souffle?
Don't know if you can find these, but tomorrow eve at a dinner party I'm serving tartufo (the Italian ice cream dessert). The ones I purchased are chcolate on the outside with a centre of raspbery sherbet. Yes, I bought them, but will dress up with a raspberry coulis, a bit of whipped cream and fresh raspberries.
Dessert for Thai dinner???
My sister-in-law is having several for dinner and ordering in from a great Thai restaurant in her area. I volunteered to bring dessert BEFORE I realized what she was serving. I believe she is also having appetizers before dinner - so all in all there will be plenty of food. My question is....what the heck do I bring for dessert? There will be couples there that we have never met, so no idea as to their tastes. I was thinking perhaps some green tea gelato and in keeping with the holiday spirit, a small plate of sweets?? I have a good repetoire of Xmas dessert items but am open to suggestions in keeping with the Thai flavours!! Thanks!
