Boccalone’s Nduja
Funny chorizo came up; I logged on only to post that I just made the most delicious chorizo and eggs with a chunk of nduja and a half a scallion.
I just got back from SF, but does anyone know how long nduja keeps?
(Other SF food I can't wait to return to: anything at Dosa on Fillmore...oh and Smugglers Cove...and Tony's...and the Musee Mechanique, if it were food)
baguette on christmas?
clear flour is closed and so every other place seems to be--but I would love a baguette to go with the cassoulet simmering on my stove right now. any chance anyone has run into this problem and solved it?
Grocery Store Sugar Cookie Recipe, Anyone?
My gf, a pastry chef at a private club, has just this week accidentally created a recipe for a soft sugar cookie that she compares to the old Entenmann's cookie. I am not really familiar with the genre but I can vouch for the tastiness of the cookie. She doesn't use Crisco of any stripe so there is some other magic involved. She asked me to let you know that she would get back to you tomorrow night after work with the recipe. Though she did add a couple of drops of coconut extract per batch, she says it is not a dealbreaker. Multicolored sugar sprinkles are also involved. Otherwise, nothing to shop for.
Hungry Mother of Cambridge open!
I was there Thurs too...hmmm......and my dad's from Cleveland (TN) and my mom spent most of her childhood in Knoxville....she makes him pinto beans, collards, creamed corn, fried okra, corn bread (no sugar) and sliced tomatoes for his birthday every year. Anyway I loved everything I tried too, boiled peanuts were addictive, oysters and shrimp and grits (the latter's been a source of disappointment elsewhere) were perfectly cooked and seasoned and distinct in flavor. I enjoyed the catfish pate a lot too. Also had the catfish entree, fantastic, unexpectedly crunchy crust, juicy inside.
(Surely there is a unique thread in the works?)
Anniversary dinner w/ great view/atmosphere
Chester WAS the best, but it's been closed for a couple of summers now.
Olecito?
liked it in May, like it now. since then have tried the shrimp taco and the chile taco, approved of both. btw, don't make the mistake of over-ordering based on small price--they're a lot of food for the $.
Maria y Ricardo's
Finally got to Hi-Lo and I can confirm that they have them--they had piles of them today.
is Four Burgers in Central Sq open yet?
I don't like RFO's burger either, and I favor med rare, and the Druid's is my favorite. So you might like that one.
Farmers' Markets week of June 9, 2008
if you add a cone and tilt your monitor, it looks delicious too:
Toscanini's vs. Christina's
ah, well, it certainly never occurred to me that they should have broken any rules for me. but perhaps that is clear, and your intention is more to discuss general issues of retail management.
For myself, I hadn't known there was a rule until I asked, and, never having witnessed what I would consider sample abuse--impatient customer though I may be--it had never occurred to me that a place would need to establish a rule along these lines.
and now I believe I have contributed all I have to offer on this highly controversial topic.
and, I will add that whoever stirred up this nest had better be pretty good at trivia.
Where have you always had a bad meal?
pav bhaji is served with hamburger buns--they are said to be quite similar to the Indian pav used.
We like Bukhara, but avoid Sunday nights, where we've found the quality of the kitchen takes a dive. We tend toward the vegetarian dishes (bhindi, bharta, paneer) though I like the gosht saag. Agreed that the floor is in total disarray these days--and we trading out the chafing dishes was a bad idea to say the least. Still, we are picky about Indian at my house, cook it some at home, and can't agree that Bukhara needs to leave town (especially not to be replaced by Punjabi Dhaba, which is no more than ok in my book).
Best sandwich... ever?
I had a great Thanksgiving sandwich--my favorite kind of sandwich too--at Fiore's in JP a couple of weeks ago. Best one I have had in a long time. They have good vegan cookies in there too (and this is coming, obviously, from a non-vegan).
Toscanini's vs. Christina's
It's funny to see so much vehemence against the idea of samples on here! I'll ask for tastes because I am usually interested in the weird flavors--and then only to narrow down what I am going to order. I have myself asked for a third taste only once--and it happened to be at Christina's--and so I learned about their limit. Maybe everyone has a limit, I don't know. But I get a little bit of a get-'em-in-get-'em-out vibe in there already and this rule struck me the wrong way in that context.
Live a little! Take the ice cream shops up on their offer of samples--when you are curious to find out if you really want a whole half-pint's worth of, say, Guinness on a cone--it's cheap for them, it sells their ice cream esp. risky flavors, and, if you don't stand there hemming and hawing over your decision (which plenty of people do without the aid of little plastic spoons), it takes half a second.
(And, mshillue, I would observe that you are quite fond of samples outside of the ice cream realm!)
Kendall lunch thread
I had that avocado quesadilla at Mother's Day brunch--I pretty much tried everything they were serving, which was quite a task, and it was my single favorite item. Great to know it's on the bbq menu.

PS--first time I went, a Chinese coworker took me there, ordered for me--many of the dishes listed here: chops, fish, eggplant. (We have had another eggplant and I believe a green bean dish on subsequent visits.) She loves it, but she is quick to point out that it is Taiwanese, not Chinese--and so she feels she's not the best authority--anyway it's cheap and delicious (and CROWDED--and yes that's pre-renovation) for lunch.
Affordable Sunday Brunch
I've had the Hamersley's brunch and it is not too pricey at all. A little sparse, though, both in selection and on the plate.
I would recommend brunch at Pops. We've been twice and enjoyed it both times. Don't know if that patio/greenhouse area in the back has windows that open--but even in winter it has an outdoorsy feeling.
Affordable Sunday Brunch
I like it on Saturday, not on Sunday. Sunday's a scene and you have to have reservations. Saturday has the specials. And always those Bloody Marys.
Chef's table at Ten Tables
Service is a problem we have had at TT--actually we had such an unpleasant experience the first time (being made to wait half an hour in the basement for our reservations, general neglect, unpleasant attitudes--NOT ours!--we are generally very forgiving--SO is a pastry chef and a bleeding heart) that we have never managed to go back despite living within walking distance! I do mean to go back but it's taken QUITE a while to get up the urge.
Toscanini's vs. Christina's
Well, there are a lot of them, and they're only OK.
In JP we have them and Emack's (kind of) and I am not crazy about either of them. Usually we just get Toscanini's from the Co-op.
Food shopping bargains: Tips and suggestions?
I don't see anyone else smiling in here.

Is making yogurt really cheaper? I was on the verge of getting a yogurt maker and decided that by the time I bought the milk I'd be paying at least as much as I do now for store-bought...but there was no actual number-crunching
Maria y Ricardo's
yes, that's the new style. it's like every other commercial tortilla, doughy and stiff.
Estragon
yes, it reminds me of Waiting for Godot first, tarragon second...btw, how's the table service? :D
Toscanini's vs. Christina's
I agree--they are both top quality and to a large extent it depends what flavor you want (and how you like each one's interpretation of your favorites). That said, I'm in the Toscanini's camp. Partly because of the service--I find the employees at T's to be a trip, really sweet for the most part--and at Christina's it's ALL business and to my mind quite grim. Get in-get the hell out (and don't let your curiosity get the best of you--there's an official two-tastes-per-customer policy. I mean a policy!).
Make no mistake: they are the two best ice cream purveyors around (my physically distant next favorite is the Juice Bar on Nantucket) by a wide, wide margin.
Christina's had a fantastic Turkish Delight for years. Been gone for a while now.
T's has a bourbon-black pepper flavor lately that is ridiculously good.
