Beehive: 80 Seat Patio?

The patio looks like it's in the middle of no man's land, and the Sovereign Bank kiosk in the middle doesn't help.

I agree about the music at O Ya. It doesn't fit at all.

What is so special about Tavern on the Water??

With one of the best views in the city, it's too bad it's not Neptune on the Water, or something comparable.

Last Boston Meal -- Sushi Debate

My vote would be Uni, consistently spectacular.

If fin is talking about a patio @ Oishi in the South End, it's not in a great spot. It's on a bit of a gritty stretch of Washington Street. It's certainly no Oleana or Hammersley's when it comes to ambiance.

A drink in a pineapple

ECG no longer does it anywhere in the restaurant. I just confirmed with a bartender.

What is so special about Tavern on the Water??

Great view of the skyline. Decent place to watch a game. 2-ingredient drinks are usually safe. Beyond the view, nothing is special. Total waste of space, and no need to go there unless you wear your baseball hat backwards and think that's cool.

Looking for meatloaf

I noticed meatloaf on the menu at Stephanie's on Newbury Street yesterday afternoon. Could be a good call on the sidewalk if the weather is nice. I enjoyed the tuna tartare over avocado with cucumber and a sauce with a slight kick. Only complaint was the tuna was a little mushy. Before anyone rips the place to shreds, has anyone actually eaten the meatloaf at Stephanie's recently?

Quite pleased with the reuben at Pops (South End)

I agree the reuben is great. The sandwich is very filling and a little difficult to keep in tact, but still tastes great. The service at lunch is a little "on edge"/nervous and the food is slow from the kitchen, even when they're not that busy.

Stephanie's taking over Garden of Eden spot

I'm with you. When I said "new location" I meant "sister restaurant." They do great #'s on Newbury. I understand the licensing issue. I hope they'll get the ok for bar seating. I'll try to find out about wine/beer or if a full liquor license is in the works.

Stephanie's taking over Garden of Eden spot

I heard the same information over the weekend.

I was walking by "the original" on Newbury yesterday and stopped in to say hello the Lee (formerly of Union) on the bar. A friend was sitting at the bar enjoying a tuna tartare with avocado that she said was excellent. Hopefully the new location will be a big improvement over Garden of Eden, and will include a nice bar. Garden of Eden was awful in every way.

Sometimes the meal is perfect even when the chow isn't: Sullivan's

Great post tamer, and well put cassis.

I went to Sullivan's a couple of weeks ago and had a double cheeseburger, those old-fashioned ribbed fries and a fountain coke. The bun was lightly grilled to give it a little crunch. I second your recommendation that this place is a great find, and a great experience when you tie in the walk around the horseshoe. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

How to get the "good" server?

I believe wholeheartedly in giving positive feedback on a server to a manager, especially when a server does an exceptional job. I also believe in letting a manager know when a server was sub-par. Why not make someone's day when they do a great job? Yes, they're expected to do a great job, but a little positive reinforcement never hurts.

tell me...WHAT is wrong with the Barking Crab?

"It's just a shame that there aren't really any good no frills seafood shack type restaurants, by the water in Boston."

It really is. I get a kick out of the fact that some people recommend places like the Barking Crab when out-of-towners are looking for a water view. It's also a shame that we have to drive to places like The Beachcomber in Wellfleet to find a great seafood shack on the water.

Charlestown - what's the food scene like?

I actually did like the steak and cheese at Papa Gino's. That is if you could make it through the gauntlet of thugs and townies on the sidewalk in front of CVS without getting into a fight.

SP is spot on. Johnny's is a dump.

Charlestown - what's the food scene like?

Sorry JT, but your choices/options are going to dwindle considerably. I moved from Charlestown to the South End almost 5 years ago and it was like going to Churchill Downs from Suffolk Downs to watch a horse race. There is no comparison. I believe that the biggest thing you will miss is not being able to walk to so many places in your neighborhood, especially on cold, rainy or snowy nights. Yes, the North End is "just over the bridge," and Sommerville and Cambridge are close, but the options of places to walk close to home will be very limited. Depending on where you live, you will only have a couple of choices.

Olives is your best bet. Many people who haven't tried Olives in the last few years are critical, but it's improved a lot since Joe Brenner is back at the helm.

Ironside is a good place to watch a game and get decent, casual pub food.

Tangereino is a nice dark place for a drink and decent food.

Navy Yard Bistro is decent standard fare.

Sorelle service is surly. Sandwich nazi.

Tavern on the water, good for a beer, the view and to watch a game.

Warren Tavern. Bar, Burger and Baseball hats.

Figs. Good pizza and decent food.

I'm with Gabatta...what food scene?

UES Mayor coming for visit and need Recs for higher end places!!

I'm almost certain that Hammersly's was one of those places that closed for 2 weeks last summer to paint and spruce up the entire place. I wouldn't put Hammersly's on your list because the bar is so small and the atmosphere is very staid. Maybe you could overcome the ambiance, or lack thereof, by bringing a group and making your own fun. It's not uncommen to see solo diners sitting at the bar with a book or to see boring deuces or four tops that looked like they just came from buying more whale pants at a boutique in Nantucket.

I envision the Mayor as more of a Toro or Neptune guy, where the atmosphere and food are so much more fun, and it's not uncommon to make new friends and share food with strangers. Maybe I'm wrong, but a sedate table at Hammersly's (just to try the chicken) would be a buzz kill.

UES Mayor coming for visit and need Recs for higher end places!!

Come on hot shot, anyone who refers to himself as the "Mayor" deserves some ribbing!!! You've been given all of the places that fit your criteria;

- Clio/Uni
- #9 (John and Ryan)
- Sorrelina
- Mistral
- Mooo
- ESK
- O Ya
- Liberty Hotel

Gramercy- I would take the Mr big stuff to the Oak room for an old-fashioned Manhattan/Martini to loosen him up. Maybe a "pub/food crawl" through the North and South End would do the trick also. Maybe we could get a duck boat named after him!!

UES Mayor coming for visit and need Recs for higher end places!!

I've gone (6 times) more for the space and drinks than the food. The only place I've dined is Scampo, where the service was a bit erratic. As others have pointed out, it's a good place to graze. If you order safe you'll be fine. If you haven't been, I guarantee that you will be impressed with the entire venue. They have preserved the bones of the old jail very well. Start with a drink at the big open bar adjacent to the lobby and work your way through all of the bars and restaurants. It's a bit of a scene that might be perfect for the Mr big pants to strut his stuff.

There's no room for two Mayors with big heads in this town!!! We have to bring your guy down a few notches...

I think Excelsior is a bad suggestion.

I'd include a night visiting all of the restaurants and bars within the Liberty Hotel.
