Raw Milk?
Welcome to San Francisco! Both OP and Claravale are delicious. OP milk tastes similar to Strauss in my opinion. It also seems to sour quicker than the Claravale. Our local neighborhood store carries Claravale, so that's what I end up picking up most often. We love it. It does have a slightly different taste...more grassy? And honestly, I also like it because it does not come in a plastic container.
Dim Sum to go in Santa Clara?
Just to report back... We ended up bringing a big box of goodies from Dim Sum King to our visit with friends. In the box were egg tarts, baked cha shao bao, cha shao w/ puff pastry, and sesame balls. Your basic kid-friendly, finger food. The egg tart pastry was flakey, custard was delicate; the cha shao puff pastry was slightly too big, but also flakey and tasty; the cha shao bao was the perfect size -- filling well-portioned and seasoned; the sesame balls also had a good amount of not-too-sweet red bean filling. Everyone was pretty happy and noshing pool side. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. I just wish everything was still warm when we dug in :( We live in SF, but I do look forward to swinging by to try more items the next time we're in the neighborhood and in need of take away dim sum. Thank you again for the recs!
Dim Sum to go in Santa Clara?
Thank you both to KC and Soup. I'm a little wary of the dim sum from Ranch 99; I'm also looking for a place where I can zip in and zip out (will have kid with me too). I'm going to give Dim Sum King a try. Always love to check out a new place anyway. Thank you!

Dim Sum to go in Santa Clara?
Visiting friends with kids tomorrow in Santa Clara. We will be driving down from SF and would love to bring delicious dim sum -- would also like it to be as fresh as possible. Our destination is close to Great America (Lick Mill Blvd & Tasman Dr). Any chance there might be someplace good to stop on the way? Thanks so much in advance.
Hot Chocolate 2009 - Open season
I make our own hot chocolates too. I'm curious to know what your favorite chocolate and/or unsweetened cocoas are for making hot chocolate?
Joong/Zongzi - East Bay?
Pork and zero peanuts (or mung beans) sound like Shanghainese zhongzi -- my favorite that my mom used to make, with pork belly and soy sauce. Can't find them anywhere. I might've asked before...(and apologies in advance for jumping into this post), does anyone have tips on where to find these? I also like the sweet version with red bean & sugar. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.
Thai Market(s)?
True. After Kasma's classes (off and on for about 2 years), I couldn't eat Thai at a restaurant for another year. I still think it's always better to make for oneself. Her trips are on my list too. No kids allowed, though. So will have to wait until ours is big enough to trek/eat with us!
Thai Market(s)?
Thank you! I finally did remember to pull up Kasma's site. Found May Wah market on Clement and did my one-stop shopping. Her site's now bookmarked (again) on my phone. :o)
Thai Market(s)?
Making Tom Yum Goong this weekend for a party. When I lived in Berkeley, I used to make a stop at Berkeley Bowl, then at Erawan for anything the Bowl didn't have (which was actually quite rare). Erawan isn't there anymore. And, now I live in SF. If I didn't have to make the trip across the bridge, it would be nice. Any ideas for one- (or two-) stop shopping on this side?
Masa's - where I found my perfect meal
Thank you for the fantastic review. I have only been there once, and not since Julian Serrano was the chef. For days afterward, nothing tasted good in comparison.
Corn muffins in San Francisco
Joe at Desination Bakery in Glen Park makes a corn muffin.
Anything Good around McAfee Stadium?
Five years old! Hot dogs, peanuts, and malts for sure! You should have one of each with him. Have a great time -- we have yet to take our little girl, almost 5 also.
Best Shanghai-Style Rice Cake in SF
Yes, I just bought a package, sliced, at Kukje in Daly City. Organic, too, if you're into that. At the small sit down restaurant, located inside the market, you can taste the rice cakes in a soup. Yum. As a Korean food newbie, I just tasted that one a few weeks ago. Very delicious.

SF with Kids ... need dining suggestions!
I'll put a plug in for Chenery Park Kids Night. It's great. Quite a few choices for the little ones. Kids everywhere. Regular menu and bar available to Moms and Dads. They make a mean mojito. Another perk: they are about 2 blocks from the Glen Park BART station. http://www.chenerypark.com/
Best Soft Serve Ice Cream
Not soft serve in particular, but my favorite: Bi-Rite Creamery. Don't miss this while you're in SF. Better yet, make it an event: about a block away is the Bi-Rite market. Pick up some picnic food, head over to Dolores Park for lunch. Then get Bi-Rite ice cream for dessert. Enjoy, and enjoy your visit!
Tabe: new SF ramen option
ha ha ha haaaaa!! Can't wait to try this one. Thanks for the great review david.
Enough with the donuts, Sunday is Duanwu!
yeah, those are the ones exactly... I might have to visit Ranch 99 (Daly City) again to see if they've restocked the savory jaixing-style zhongzi....
Enough with the donuts, Sunday is Duanwu!
Thanks Xiao Yang for the link! Thanks also for the sugar in the filling tip, I will keep that in mind when I get a chance to dive into the recipe. Yep, in my mind, these are also the "classic" zongzi.
For kc72, Ranch 99 was charging $9.99 for a bag of the savory zongzi (they also had Cantonese and Taiwanese versions for the same price). $7.99 for the red bean, which, I'm guessing would appeal to someone out there. But if you're looking for a sweet red bean zongzi, these don't quite cut it. :o(
Enough with the donuts, Sunday is Duanwu!
So THAT's why I saw a table full of zongzi at Ranch 99 yesterday (Daly City).
I grew up eating zongzi that I believe to be shanghai style (no peanuts please!). The savory is just stuffed with pork, pork belly, and seasoned with soy sauce. Yummmm. The sweet version has sweet red bean paste inside. I had NEVER seen these in a store until yesterday. 99 Ranch was out of the savory version. So I went home with a bag of about 8 zongzi labeled "red bean". Bleh! Not only were the beans WHOLE and dotted throughout. The entired thing actually tasted salty (?!). I tried putting sugar on it and it didn't help. Really disappointing -- and I have 7 more of these things in my 'frig. Grrrr.
Has anyone ever seen Shanghai style zongzi like I used to eat as a kid?
I'lll also check out the Olivia Wu recipes (thanks Nancy Berry).
Thai market in SF?
Berkeley Bowl does carry the "good" brand of coconut milk : Chaokok? Also recommended by Kasma. Her tip for remembering this brand? The letters "OK" is in the middle of the name.
Battambang in SF would be a good bet for Kasma's favorite Golden Boy fish sauce. Paul H recommended thaifoodandtravel.com -- it's Kasma's website and chock full of shopping information, recipes, class info. Her classes are the best, hands down. I couldn't eat out for Thai for a year after I stopped taking classes from her.
Best thin crust pizza in SF?
If you find yourself in the south end of town, try Gialina's in Glen Park (on Diamond at Chenery). Thin, zero soggy, all delicious!

Thai market in SF?
I realize you're looking for sources in SF. But when we lived in Berkeley, I could almost always do one-stop shopping for Thai at Berkeley Bowl: meats, fish, chilies, galanga, kaffir lime leaves (fresh), etc etc. And while you're there, get lunch and the rest of your groceries taken care of.
Best Breakfast place in Eastbay
Right. Mama's Royal Cafe! A good one. And yes, I'd have to agree Rick and Ann's could have an atrocious wait. Although I have gone there on the late side (2pm? I think they might wrap it up by about 3pm), and was seated almost immediately. I love the hash there.
Best Breakfast place in Eastbay
I have two: Rick and Ann's, next to the Claremont Resort http://www.rickandanns.com/ and La Note on Shattuck. http://www.lanoterestaurant.com/ Both in Berkeley. I have to qualify this by saying that we live in SF now and haven't been back there for a while. But I have always had delicious food in charming surroundings at these two places. Having breakfast out is lovely in any case... these places made it even more enjoyable.
Best Carnitas Taco in the Bay?
La Taqueria is very good. My other fave when we lived in Berkeley: Picante on 6th Street. Delicous: always tender, always flavorful. http://picantecocina.ypguides.net/ AND you can watch the ladies make fresh tortillas.
Dinner in Daly City?
Yes, Kukje still has the sit-down area. Delicious tofu dishes, the Korean names of which I forget...
Lunch near 10th & Howard?
Thanks again for the good reco. I'll go to Ted's just to see this zippy line. Any fast moving line gets my vote -- at least once. Can't wait for lunch!
Lunch near 10th & Howard?
Haven't been to Manora's in ages. But alas, not much time tomorrow. I'll make a note. Thanks for the reminder :o)
Lunch near 10th & Howard?
Nope, sorry didn't specify take-out and quick-like. And you're right, a weird area. Ted's Market or the taqueria sounds like what I'm looking for. Thanks a bunch!
Lunch near 10th & Howard?
I'll be spending most of my day tomorrow at 10th and Howard. Any good recs for lunch in the area without getting into my car?
