Best Banana Cream Pie in LA??

I don't even like pie....but the banana cream pie at the Apple Pan is outstanding! You can taste the quality ingredients, sweet and plenty of bananas, the cream not overly sweet but rich...

I have been twice now to Sushi Hanashi on Lincoln close to the 10 fwy and across Walgreen's (that's Venice for you). This place has been open for some time but they changed owners a few months ago.
I am no fan of happy hour sushi, but I make an exception for this place: from 3-5pm most sushi and some rolls are 30% off.
The quality in my opinion is solid, it is not outstanding but it's good, fresh fish - ideal if you need a fix but don't want to go all out.
My friend and I ate there and paid $42 (plus tip) - we had an ex-boyfriend roll, nigiri, and a large hot sake. Not bad, eh?

Oh and it just occurred to me....I usually go here for Santouka Ramen (best salt ramen!), but the Mitsuwa Marketplace (Sawtelle and Venice Blvd, Mar Vista) has pre-prepared sushi, sashimi, bowls and other Japanese dishes. The fish quality is outstanding, the seaweed melts in your mouth (no joke), and the prices are super affordable.

Sushi Raku in Agoura Hills - or else....?

I only found older threads for this:
my friend keeps telling me this place is fantastic and a serious sushi place (he says sushi master is Japanese and even knows/is trained to prepare blow fish)- I cannot really tell but it seems from what I have been reading online that guests like their rolls a lot (not nigiri?).

Has anyone been recently? Your thoughts?

Any other recommendations for sushi in the area (10-15 minutes drive)?

Thanks a lot & happy eating!

Chowhound Find: Sushi Central in Palms

I recommend the monkfish liver: it's prepared differently than at other restaurants.
You might want to sit at the sushi bar, I had a very informative and pleasant conversation with the chef.

"Penacle" black tea??

I had this very delicate black tea at a restaurant in Bangkok, the waitress told me the brand is "Penacle" - I did several searches but could not find it. Any ideas of brands that could be similarly-named (yes, I know it's a long shot!)? - thanks!

Bangkok - Siem Reap - Ho Chi Minh City

I am traveling for the first time to Asia in November, and I am really excited about the food! Now, after reading about being careful about all kinds of stuff (raw food etc) I am little bit on the fence about how to really experience all the local flavors but at the same time staying safe (being Westerner and all :-(). I would really appreciate some suggestions/ideas where to eat and what....THANKS in advance!

Best Creme Brulee in LA???

I have been to Barbrix in Silverlake a few weeks ago, and I was not overly impressed with the menu and the dishes we ordered....but the Nutella crème brûlée was to die for: it had the right balance between creaminess and smoothness, chocolatey-milky flavor, not to sweet. I think I might just go back there just for this dessert (and I am normally a cheese plate person).

heard it on the radio....cheese and sake pairing?

I listened to a public radio show a few months ago and the hosts were discussing some quite unusual pairings - cheese and sake. In the conversation, they also brought up a few (US, Wisconsin?) cheese makers and their unique creations. Now I have tried to find a podcast or even info only but can't seem to find anything at all - I checked the NPR's food shows and also did searches online. HELP!

Quark = curd?

I want to make a rhubarb cheesecake with a German recipe - the ingredients include Quark, which I am not sure I can get in US (Los Angeles). Any ideas where to look for it, or how to substitute it? thanks!

Good soups in LA?

Hi,
I am looking for places that have great soups. I love Pho and Thai-style soups, but also interesting variations of classics or superior classic soups.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Who would have thought great pickles are found at Hooters (of all places...). But yes, they have the best pickles I tasted in LA.

I Don't Really Care For Butter On My Bread

Butter is fat and hence carries flavor. The quality of the butter though really does matter - if you have any Trader Joe's in your area, you should try their European-style butter, it's superior.
