Chowhound Find: Sushi Central in Palms

I recommend the monkfish liver: it's prepared differently than at other restaurants.
You might want to sit at the sushi bar, I had a very informative and pleasant conversation with the chef.

"Penacle" black tea??

I had this very delicate black tea at a restaurant in Bangkok, the waitress told me the brand is "Penacle" - I did several searches but could not find it. Any ideas of brands that could be similarly-named (yes, I know it's a long shot!)? - thanks!

Chiba - sushi in North Hollywood?

Kobe Lover: have you ever been to Sushi Don (Laurel Canyon and Riverside)? Their spicy tuna roll is my favorite dish there.

Bangkok - Siem Reap - Ho Chi Minh City

I am traveling for the first time to Asia in November, and I am really excited about the food! Now, after reading about being careful about all kinds of stuff (raw food etc) I am little bit on the fence about how to really experience all the local flavors but at the same time staying safe (being Westerner and all :-(). I would really appreciate some suggestions/ideas where to eat and what....THANKS in advance!

Best Creme Brulee in LA???

I have been to Barbrix in Silverlake a few weeks ago, and I was not overly impressed with the menu and the dishes we ordered....but the Nutella crème brûlée was to die for: it had the right balance between creaminess and smoothness, chocolatey-milky flavor, not to sweet. I think I might just go back there just for this dessert (and I am normally a cheese plate person).

heard it on the radio....cheese and sake pairing?

I listened to a public radio show a few months ago and the hosts were discussing some quite unusual pairings - cheese and sake. In the conversation, they also brought up a few (US, Wisconsin?) cheese makers and their unique creations. Now I have tried to find a podcast or even info only but can't seem to find anything at all - I checked the NPR's food shows and also did searches online. HELP!

Quark = curd?

I want to make a rhubarb cheesecake with a German recipe - the ingredients include Quark, which I am not sure I can get in US (Los Angeles). Any ideas where to look for it, or how to substitute it? thanks!

Good soups in LA?

Hi,
I am looking for places that have great soups. I love Pho and Thai-style soups, but also interesting variations of classics or superior classic soups.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Claudia

Fried Pickles

Who would have thought great pickles are found at Hooters (of all places...). But yes, they have the best pickles I tasted in LA.

I Don't Really Care For Butter On My Bread

Butter is fat and hence carries flavor. The quality of the butter though really does matter - if you have any Trader Joe's in your area, you should try their European-style butter, it's superior.

Puro Sabor - Great Van Nuys Lunch

I have been there a few times now and the food never disappoints - I usually order Lomo Saltado, and the meat is always tender and tasty. The other Peruvian restaurants around LA are inferior to Puro Sabor. Last time i went, I ordered the appetizer with heart (forget what it's called) and it was delicious (well, I guess you need to like intestines to begin with, but if you do you should try this dish). The secong appetizer we had were the potatoes with cheese sauce - pretty basic, but tasty as well. They also have chicha morado: it's a typical Peruvian drink made out of purple corn.

Give up on Studio City/Ventura?? a few good spots

Try Miya Sushi on Laurel Canyon (cross street: Magnolia). Reasonably priced, fresh fish. They also have interesting specials such as Shishito peppers, Chilean Seabass and others.

German Food

Try out Brats Brothers (13456 1/2 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks). Only superior sausages, with tasty sides. The owner is actually a "real" German from Munich.
