Gabardine--Pt.Loma Open Yet

I live close by and can't wait until they get their liquor license - sounds perfect for cocktails and apps. Going to Searsucker tomorrow night but my husband hates downtown.

Omaha's Best 1 night

The Boiler Room looks great - only question....do they have a bar I can eat at if I'm alone? As a woman I suffer from the eat alone awkward syndrome...

Sundance gastropub or foodie casual

Going skiing in Utah in 2 weeks and staying just outside of Sundance. We are looking for great food in a semi-casual environment. We like the gastropub feel with creative delicious local food - anyone have any ideas? Suggestions welcome - winebar might be nice too - but not snobby just great food.

Pomodoro Restaurant Point Loma - reviews?

Just moved to Point Loma and my husband heard good reviews of Pomodoro's but I haven't heard much - has anyone been recently and have any input? We've been to Old Venice, know Roseville and the Pearl so Pomodoro's is now on my radar but it's an unknown for me. It always has a crowd....

What's your favorite beachside restaurants/bar in SD?

No one mentioned Shades or Tower 2 in OB - both not right on the beach but outside and with a great Ocean View - Shades has a good happy hour and the food is not bad. Their flatbreads are fun and they have a pretty good lobster bisque. Great place to watch surf and the sunset.

North Lake Tahoe Favorites?

Just returned from 5 days in Carnelian Bay (right near Tahoe City) and here are my thoughts:

Bridgetender - great bloody mary's, kind of a dive bar / restaurant - didn't eat here as we sat at the bar and the owner sort of hovered in front of us. But a fun vibe.

Jake's - great cocktails, loved the pomi-kazi ,a cosmo but w/ pomegranate juice and sugar on the rim - ok there's more to it but it was great. The bartender and wait staff was really nice to us - we went 2x for cocktails and once we had the crab cakes - lots of crab (not lump but good quality) and very little breading. Enjoyable - didn't try dinner too many overpriced and underdeliver comments. Great lake views and music on Sat.

Wolfdales - so pleased with this choice after 3 years finally a true winner. We sat at the bar and tried the chicken potstickers, very nice. SO went for the surf and turf, I chose scallops w/ ravioli. Although disappointed the ravioli wasn't created on premise, both dishes were high quality and well prepared loved the creative fusion, flavor profiles unique but solid. Dinner ran over $200 including cocktails, but worth it. Also of note at 36 we were the youngest by 10 or 15 years.... Definitely a repeat, pricey but so far the most creative and the chef came out to meet us and did the rounds - nice to see a chef on premise on a Sat night.

Gar Woods - we love the lake view and the cocktails, great happy hour - had some fun beers and enjoyed the ourselves. Food not so great - the sliders were really low grade my so only finished one, the clams were out of a frozen package....my other friend eating the sliders had a chunk of glass - he pulled it out of his mouth with blood, it was a couple of pieces - we think it was in the beef - they much order frozen patties from... anyway he was really low key about the glass and we get the mood lively but later my so and I both felt really bad - he had a cut in his tongue and cheek and you know how that stings when you eat anything acidic. We will return to Gar Wood but only for cocktails. It's up to the kitchen to maintain standards for their products.

Still more to try - as we left Tahoe was getting 12 inches or more of snow...

Point Loma Restaurant Questions

Umi Sushi is my fave in SD, they have great quality seafood and some interesting combos, family friendly, which can be a pain on date night with the unattended children running free.

Pizza Nova is ok - like mentioned below, it's a take on CPK but pretty good quality, nothing exciting.

Club Marina - total dive bar, but cheap and dirty, if you are down with strong drinks.

Hudson Bay has pretty good clam chowder and fish and chips, not as pricey as Pt Loma Seafoods but not the variety either. Fun to sit outside with clam chowder and a salad for lunch. Not a dinner place.

North Lake Tahoe Favorites?

My SO and I went to Soule Domaine last year and had a less than stellar experience. I'm not sure if it's because we went early in the evening, but the place had 4 tables seated on top of eachother and it was so quiet anyone at any of the 4 tables that spoke was heard. Our waiter had that pompous I am culinary or local attitude. My SO couldn't take it, so we ended up taking our entrees to go and heading back to our house to eat. The food was really top notch but the atmosphere and waitstaff were not inviting.

Best Kebab/Shawarma in SD???

I really love the chicken shawarma at Mama's in North Park. It's an order at the counter, or eat outside kind of place but really great.

Impress the 'rents

No budget restrictions, since it's a once every 2 years event, we go all out. Location - we live in OB so not looking for North County, but anywhere in main SD. Any type of food is welcome, but we are looking for overall experience, including nice wine menu and good atmosphere.

Impress the 'rents

My parents come into town every 2 year from New England and it's always a challenge to impress them w/ SD culinary delights. I'm thinking Urban Solace and maybe Sea Rocket or the Linkery - need really impressive SD restaurants- sorry to be trite but I'm competing against Boston so I want something unique - like the time I took them to El Agave in Old Town that's a special and unique dinner - any thoughts?

San Diego Restaurant Week 2009

Best advantage of restaurant week - I called Friday night around 530 to The Better Half and got reservations for the next day for 6 people at 7:30pm - saved my procrastinating hide! Service was great, loved the 1/2 bottles of wine, ostrich was a hit, toer of beets & quail a keeper, mahi special, not so special. Amuse bouche very nice. All in all so glad we chose Better Half and not one of those participating in RW.

Roseville -- San Diego/Point Loma

Thinking about heading here this weekend, menu on the website looks good, not super exciting, but since we live in OB we want to give it a try. Anybody have any reviews or input?

Fresh pasta or pasta sheets in SD

I'm looking for the pasta sheets and the fresh ricotta, then I'll take it from there and make it at home. Look out Mario here I come!

Fresh pasta or pasta sheets in SD

The poached egg is inside the nice big fluffy ravioli. It was great nesting on the fresh ricotta, floating on yummy sage brown butter.

Help Me Pick a Magazine

I receive both Cooking Light and Bon Appetit and use CL for easy week day meals and Bon Appetit for weekend meals - I think they both compliment eachother well. Tried Food & Wine and Gourmet and the meals weren't as easy to implement and the overall magazine was a little off topic for me. Everyday Food I bought at the airport and thought all of the recipes were way too basic and not creative at all.

Fresh pasta or pasta sheets in SD

I'm looking for fresh pasta or pasta sheets in the Central SD area. I'm sure there are one or two places in Little Italy, any suggestions? I went to Mario Batalli's Osteria Mozza in LA on Saturday and had the BEST ravioli, only one on the plate but filled with fresh homemade ricotta and a poached egg. The egg oozed out into the sage butter and was absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to replicate, but I haven't quite worked my way up to making pasta at home. Sounds like I need a pasta maker for Christmas! Any ideas on fresh pasta?

Patina or Cafe Pinot

Which would you choose for a Friday night dinner w/ Dad? He's mid-60's and doesn't drink, but we both love great food.

Trader Joe's not carrying orzo

Last week I was looking for orzo at Trader Joe's and when not found asked the manager when I could expect to see it again. He indicated that nationwide it was not a good selling item and so they discontinued the product altogether. Bummer.

Casual but great food this friday downtown LA

I'm driving up from SD on Friday and won't arrive until 8:30 or so, staying at the Westin on Figueroa, any suggestions for dinner? I want terrific innovative food within walking distance of the Westin, something casual but upscale. Too much to ask for?

We are hitting Osteria Mozza on Saturday - any must do's or any please avoid? I'm really excited for Saturday night so no Italian on Friday.

Also on Sunday we are staying at the Palomar, the new boutique hotel, anyone have any thoughts on their restaurant, BLVD 16?

What's yummy @ Island Prime - SD?

I too was disappointed in Island Prime - I didn't feel like the food was of the quality I would expect at the price. C-Level we enjoy regularly - sitting outside, great cocktails, ahi appetizer is good - skip the entrees, nothing remarkable or memorable.

question for san diegans - what is the state of the food "scene" right now?

As with most of the responses I agree that the San Diego food scene has improved greatly and continues to do so. However the population and economy of SD is so different from LA to expect the food scene to be on point would be unreasonable. With the growth and acceptance of places like Urban Solace and The Linkery, hopefully we'll see more creativity in our options. My most recent example is my search for good pork belly options for my hubby, Urban Solace was my only find, where as in LA I found most similar style restaurants had a version of the pork belly. I love SD but wouldn't mind hitting some of the food trends a little quicker!!

3 Nights in LA - bistro casual, high end & laid back surfer

I'm coming from SD to LA for 3 nights in November and already really excited by my options and don't want to make a bad choice. Night 1 - with Dad, thinking a casual bistro type atmosphere, he doesn't drink so no wine bar, like fresh food good ingredients nothing too heavy. Day 2 - thinking Craft, I'm paying so I figure why not do it right. Want creative great food, something I'll remember long after the meal. Day 3 - surfer husband, won't stray far from ocean - casual, most likely flip flops, but not willing to sacrifice the quality of the food. Too much to ask for? Great food, low key casual atmosphere. Not too loud or too hip but a barlike atmosphere ok - if the food is distinct and excellent. Any help?

Forever SD - The 1 you'll never forget?

I know it's been said but South Beach, in OB - nothing like a cold beer, good music on the juke box, a terrific mahi taco, and an ocean view. It's pretty much unbeatable. My mom has begged for the mahi taco recipe and tried numerous times to replicate, but honestly it's the whole experience for me.

Israeli couscous

Coincidently I made a great Israeli couscous salad w/ fresh grilled zuchini last night using Israeli couscous from Ralph's. It was in the Jewish section of the store - near asian foods.

Alternative to Pt. Loma Seafoods

I absolutely love the ahi, sea bass, and halibut at Pt Loma seafoods. Every Wednesday I make a new creative challenging fish entree to go with Top Chef and have been purchasing the fish at Pt Loma Seafoods, but I can't get out of there for less than $25-$30 for 2 good pieces. Anybody have a good alternative? Also anyone getting creative for Top Chef tonight?
