Joan Nathan Cookbook

Thanks, chocolatechip and rocky. Jewish Holiday it will be.
Herby, I looked at Quiches, Kugels but I already have Olive Trees and Honey (by Gil Marks) so I think that Quiches would be redundant. Thanks, for the rec, though.

Joan Nathan Cookbook

I'm trying to decide which Joan Nathan cookbook I should get. I have narrowed the choice to Jewish Cooking in America, and the Jewish Holiday Cookbook. I know the Holiday cookbook has considerably fewer recipes, but I wonder if I need something as comprehensive as Jewish Cooking in America, since I do have some other Jewish cookbooks.
Any thoughts on these two, or, perhaps, a suggestion of another Joan Nathan book, would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks

Passover chocolate walnut torte question

Diane,
Just to give you a heads-up...
I posted a very similar question (about a chocolate torte) on the Cooking board about two hours after you posted here. Still no answer to my question, either.
I, too, plan to make the torte for Passover, and could have written your post!!
I'll keep checking here as well as on the Cooking board , where I posted.
I am actually making the recipe from Allrecipes.com or Epicurious. Actually, I can't remember from where I got it.

Chocolate Torte

I am planning to make a chcolate torte and am wondering if I can freeze it. If it can't be frozen (without affecting the taste) how many days in advance can I make it and should I refrigerate it or leave it out?
Thanks.

Puree garlic?

Thanks for these responses. The link that you provided, todao, is great. Thanks for directing me to that site.

Puree garlic?

I am thinking about making Chicken Marbella frorm the Silver Palate Cookbook. It says to puree a head a garlic. Any suggestions on how to puree a head of garlic? Also, my husband doesn't like olives and I love them. Would I suffer more if they are omitted, or, is the flavor of the olives so overpowering that my husband will suffer if they are included?
Thanks, and any hints or thoughts about making this dish are welcome!!

Methodist Hospital Brooklyn

I went to La Bagel Delight and it was fine. I got one chicken salad sandwich and one egg salad sandwich and both were good. The sandwiches were very generously stuffed with the chicken salad and the egg salad and they served the purpose.. quick, filling food.
On my return from the hospital, I noticed a board outside Purity Diner and they had an egg on a roll for about $2.00, and that would have been fine, as well. Maybe next time!!

Methodist Hospital Brooklyn

Thanks, everyone. It looks like I have a bunch of decent choices. I think I am leaning towards
La Bagel Delight, but I'll probably decide after I check-out each place!!
Thanks again.

Methodist Hospital Brooklyn

I need to grab an egg and cheese sandwich on Mondy morning, to bring to a friend at Methodist Hospital. Can anyone tell me of a good place to get this?
I will be coming from Manhattan on the "F" train, so I think someplace on 7Avenue would be good. Don't really know that area at all, and just need a quick sandwich to take out, so any help will be appreciated. This is not for a :gourmet" breakfast!!
Thanks

Eating near Costco, Brooklyn

We will be making a trip to Costco in Brooklyn tomorrow, which may include a stop at Fairway as well.
Any ideas as to where we can catch a quick bite (other than at Fairway's Cafe, although that is a possibility).
Thanks for any suggestions, especially near Costco.
Thanks

What to do with feta cheese? Help, please

UPDATE:
Last night I made shrimp with tomatoes and feta cheese. Sorry, Coll and Alkapal, but I wimped- out and did not use ouzo.
I used Ellie Krieger's recipe (from Food Network) and it turned out great.I served it over rice and we had salad, as well,. It was very easy to make and it I'd definitley make it again.Freia, you were quite right... the feta, which is now over 2-weeks old, has held-up very well. I think my next venture with feta will be a pizza, but that probably won't be until after Thanksgiving. There were so many great suggestions on the original thread, I am going to try to get through a bunch of them. Thanks, again

What to do with feta cheese? Help, please

bizcat,
Thank you so much for those two links. They look fabulous, and I enjoy reading the stories behind the recipes. Thanks

What to do with feta cheese? Help, please

Will do!!!

What to do with feta cheese? Help, please

Thanks, alkapal and coll for the reminder about ouzo. It actually brings back great memories of when I was in Greece after I graduated from college. To be honest, I was not a fan of ouzo at that time, but perhaps cooking with it is different than drinking it straight!!
Also, thanks alkapal for the additional links. I will check them out. Someone previously mentioned feta pancakes, and I have that on my list,as well. And, yes, that picture of saganki is inspiring!!

What to do with feta cheese? Help, please

Okay... here's my first update.
Tonight I made a feta, caramelized onion, and red pepper fritatta. It was DELICIOUS!!
Sorry, Freia, I did try to reach you to invite you for dinner, but I just couldn't get through to you (LOL).
So, I did make a dent in the feta, and I loved the result. Thanks to those of you who suggested a fritatta. I imagine the same combination of ingredients would work on pizza (another suggestion, thank you), but I think my next feta dinner will be a shrimp, feta, pasta(or orzo) concoction. That will probably be next week. I will report back, and, thank you all, again.

What to do with feta cheese? Help, please

WOW!!! Thanks for all the great ideas. No I worry that I won't have enough!!
I loved the suggestions of shrimp/orzo/feta pasta, the frittata, the salad with olives, the pizza, and the spread. Actually all of these sound wonderful.
The spanakopita is certainly something I would also love.'
Thanks, too , to goodhealth gourmet for the links. There are a load of ideas there, as well.
I'm on my way to using up the feat, thanks to you CH'ers.

Thanks for these great suggestions. Keep them coming!!!
And, yes, monavano, it is President brand. Good to know it lasts!!!

What to do with feta cheese? Help, please

Was in Costco today, and, impulsively, bought a 2 1/2 pound slab of feta cheese. I love it sprinkled over salad with olives, but really, how much am I going to use-up that way???
So, any easy, delicious ways to use it up before it goes bad? Can I freeze part of it?
Thanks

Gotham Bar & Grill - Sunday Dinner

I can't give an opinion on the prix-fixe dinner, as I have never tried it. However, Gotham is probably our favorite restaurant. The room is beautiful, service is great, and the food and its presentation are always perfect. Regardless of which way you go, prix fixe or reguar menu, I can't imgine that you would not have a wonderful dinner. I'm jealous!!

Incredible (and easy) fruit Clafouti... give this a try this summer

This looks great, but I'm a bit confused about the sugar.
The recipe calls for 1 1/4 cups of sugar. One cup is going into the batter, and the other 1/4 cup goes on top. Does the 1/4 cup go on top of the batter before you put it in the oven(as it says in sprinkle sugar on top) or after it is in the oven, about 10 minutes before it is due to be done. You have the "sprinkle sugar" in two different places.
Thanks

Sunday brunch in Carroll Gardens

Thanks, everyone. These look great. I'm thinking Cafe Luluc (which does not accept reservations) or Prime Meats (haven't searched whether or not they accept reservations) might work.
Since these are all within walking distance of each other (including Chestnut,...Buttermilk is a bit further) if one place is too crowded, we'll go elsewhere.
Thanks,again.

Nice dinner in W. Village

Thank you all l for the great recs. I think the menu at Annisa is a bit too non-traditional for our host, but will consider it for another time. I will definitely consider Babbo and Market Table
Collichio and Sons and Little Owl are also on my radar.
Thanks

Nice dinner in W. Village

My husband and I are being treated to a higer-end dinner in the W. Village. Price is not much of an issue. We prefer American or Italian food, and definitely do not want anything spicy.
We have been to Gotham (always love it), Perry St, Otto, DelPosto, Blue Hill and other area restaurants.
Our host appreciates fine food and drink, and I am just at a loss as to where to go. This will be for a weeknight in mid-July, if that matters.
Any thoughts? Should we do a repeat of one of the restaurants we've already been to? Any ideas for something new?
We usually default to Gotham, but would love love some new place to try.
Oh, we do not want anything in the Meatpacking district.
Thanks

Pepin's "Fast Food My Way"

Just got this book out of the library. Does anyone have any favorite recipes from this book that you would recommend? It looks like the balsamic chicken gets some love, and I wondered what else I should try.
Thanks

Glass Jars?

WOW!!! These suggestions are fabulous!! So many choices. I thank you all. I especially appreciate LNG's naming ("wide mouth canning jars") what I am searching for, and the link that Jung Mann provided.
I will look into Whole Foods and Ace Hardware as they are nearby.
Thank you all, again.

Glass Jars?

Thanks, all.I guess I'll make a trip to Chelsea Market and check it out. I don't really want/need canning jars. What I really want is jars like gefilte fish comes in.. .. same diameter from top to bottom, without that narrower, indented upper part.

Glass Jars?

Any thoughts as to where in Manhattan I can buy wide-mouth glass jars? I prefer to put things in glass, and when I make tomato sauce or soup, it's easier to pour the liquid into a wider mouth jar.
I have some glass jars which I saved from store-bought things, but I really need more.
Thanks
