skeptical first timer - Dukem, Etete, or Ethiopic?

Looking for great ethiopian for someone who is an experienced eater but skeptical of the DC scene. Where should we go to impress? I'd prefer to stay in the district (and not venture out to Silver Spring). Which of the above is the most interesting? Or is there somewhere else I should be aware of?

thanks!

Midwood/Ditmas Part - central Asian, middle eastern, and other recs on Coney Island Ave from Ave. J to Cortelyou and thereabouts?

Midwood/Ditmas Part - central Asian, middle eastern, and other recs on Coney Island Ave from Ave. J to Cortelyou and thereabouts?

I have a friend in Midwood near Ave. H and Coney Island. Every time I am out there, I see all manner of intensity in the way of (what appears to me to be) central Asian and middle eastern restaurants, bakeries, snack shops, etc. I need some help navigating all of this. Not interested in the hipster fare up on Cortelyou or DiFara's - I want the kebabs and plov and everything fragant and amazing that perfumes the streets I traverse in the area bounded by Ave J on the south, Cortelyou on the north, Ocean Ave. on the east, and Ocean Pkwy on the west. I'm open to expanding this area for something special.

Does anyone have any insight? Guidance for a neophyte?

Any help would be much appreciated

Coco South East Asian Cuisine (Elmhurst)?

I always see this Coco place on Broadway in Elmhurst (roughly across the street from the strip mall that houses Nusara). I think it is Malaysian. Has anyone been there?

Did Minangasli close?

I attempted to go to Minangasli last week and found that it no longer exists - it its place there is a vaguely Indonesian restaurant (I think it had gado gado on the menu, although there seemed to be some pan-Asian offerings as well).

Anyone have any info?

Hummus and pita in Astoria (Steinway)?

Does anyone know if any of the Egyptian or Moroccan places in Astoria (on or near Steinway) make particularly good hummus and/or bake their own pita?

My frame of reference for good hummus is Hummus Place in Manhattan (I stand ready to be corrected in my believe that this is good hummus).

Thank you

Lunch in Jamaica near the courts - recommendations?

I have jury duty this week in Jamaica (the court is on Sutphin between Jamaica and Hillside).

What can I walk to in the area that would be fun and interesting? Any good Caribbean nearby? I know there's a Sybil's Bakery somewhere up there. What else? I need something relatively quick and closeby - unfortunately I won't have time to go to the Liberty Ave. area for roti or Veggie Castle...

Food recs in the Bend-Sisters-La Pine-Crater Lake area?

Thanks Tacompton! We're in Bend now and last night went to Deschutes, which did not dissapoint. I might add that I thought that the prices were more than reasonable for some really good beer. Wife had the housemade gingerale which was really unique. May try and hit another brewery on the list tonight.

Food recs in Jacksonville?

Thanks!

Definitely not against making the drive to Ashland. In fact, I'm pretty sure that will be the case. Any recs there? I should add that only one of us is a vegetarian, the other is definitely a meat eater.

Spending a day in Seattle - what to eat?

Brunhilde, point taken about NYCers and Italian food, although I have to say I was pretty impressed by what I saw on Triple D about Bizarro.
ShaolinSF, thanks for the Sushi rec! Anytime we're on the West Coast, we're always looking for locally sourced seafood, and sushi would be awesome. It really is different than NYC sushi, although NYC sushi has it's place too.

Food recs in the Bend-Sisters-La Pine-Crater Lake area?

Thanks to both of you for your replies! Tacompton, I welcome the meat and beef recs, because one of us is as much a meat and beef eater as the other is a veg/fish eater. Please recommend! Also, which of the nine breweries would be at the top of your list?

Thanks!

Portland breakfast rec?

Thanks to both posters. We will be looking for breakfast on Saturday morning, so I'm expecting long lines - although the goal is to get started early. I'd also be curious to know about a good doughnut and coffee place. It may be that a Saturday breakfast will take too long.

Spending a day in Seattle - what to eat?

Thanks for your response!

We will have a car, and are looking for anything that's good! A great sushi place would be welcomed, as would anything in the "diners, drive-ins, and dives" category.

Spending a day in Seattle - what to eat?

Hi,

We are spending the day and early evening in Seattle before we hop on a plane back to NYC. Where should we go? Veg-friendly and awesome fish/seafood places welcomed, as are ethnic restaurants.

Thanks!

Portland breakfast rec?

Hi,

We're getting into Portland late in the evening and heading out the next morning to the Columbia River Gorge area. Can you recommend an awesome place with the kind of breakfast that leaves you full through lunch?

Thanks!

Food recs up the coast from Lincoln City to Forks?

Hi,

Two NYCers making a trip up the Oregon Coast and into Forks. (Yes, I realize according to most guidebooks we're doing it backwards.) What local food can you recommend, or, even better, tell us we should not miss?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Food recs in the Bend-Sisters-La Pine-Crater Lake area?

Hi,

We are two NYCers traveling through this area next week. What is unique and/or not-to-be-missed? Veg-friendly places are even better, and the goal is to eat local.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Oh 5 Star Punjabi, your virtue has been compromised

Took out from 5 Star Punjabi last night and, much to my dismay, I discovered that 1) the price of almost every item on their menu has been upwardly adjusted by a couple of bucks, and 2) more importantly, their take-out portions are literally HALF the size (they now mirror their dine-in portions - it used to be that you'd get a giant tub of each dish, now it's only a small container). The lunch buffet still seems to be intact (and the price was only raised by a dollar), and the food is as good as always.

I am disappointed because I loved everything about this place (the food, the price, the clientele, the hours of business, the experience of going driving to the underbelly of the universe to get my food at midnight) - but it has lost some significant appeal as there is far less bang for my takeout buck. (From what I can tell, the price increase is to defray the cost of, gasp, renovations).

Rosario's restaurant? (Ditmars and 38th St., Astoria)

Really? What is that understanding based on? (The picture of the dude on the menu bore an uncanny resemblance to the 31st St. Rosario...)
