falafel

Falafel can be made from chickpeas or fava beans. That might account for the difference in color.

Barbecue Competition at Bedners

Bedners (http://www.bedners.com/) is holding a Battle of the Badges BBQ cookoff today (11/5). See their web site for details. We just walked through and it smells great. There's around 10 different groups competing.

Next Sunday (11/13) they're hosting a food truck gathering with 21 trucks.

Boca Raton Mizner park area rec needed

I like Charlie’s suggestion. Karen and I have been going to Rocksteady for lunch a couple of times a month for some time now and have been to dinner there as well. We really like this place. It’s a little hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant where the food is very good and reasonably priced and the chief-owners are really passionate about what they serve. If you and your friend like Jamaican food then this is a good solid choice. http://www.facebook.com/RocksteadyJamaicanCafe Their new web site needs a little work (http://rocksteadyjamaicanjerkcafe.com/) and you might want to call to see if they are serving from their new dinner menu yet. Also, if you want to order the Ackee & Salt Fish you need to call ahead.

Here are a couple of other suggestions in the area:

La Rosa Nautica is about as far north of Mizner Park as Rocksteady is south. I know you’ve been there for lunch (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/553411) but you might want to give it a try for dinner too.

There’s a new Japanese restaurant in Royal Palm Place where Diamutsu was located before they closed. Karen and I had lunch once just after it opened and the food was good. We shared a couple of small skewers of yakitori (pork belly and beef) as appetizers then I had the Miso Ramen and Karen had a couple of their rolls. It made for a nice lunch and we plan to go back for dinner some night. If you and your friend like sake, they have good sized list to choose from. (http://www.yakitorisakehouse.com)

Mikey's Hot Dogs....Boca Raton

Dick - It's good to see you back on the board.

Karen and I have been to Mikey's for lunch 6-8 times since they opened. We really like the Chicago dogs and the chili-cheese dogs are good as well. The service is quick and the people are very nice. This is a good neighborhood spot.

Best deli in Boca/Delray/Boynton

It's the old Pastrami Queen (7132 Beracasa Way, Boca Raton, FL 33433, in the Winn-Dixie Plaza at Palmetto and Powerline). Same owner, same very good pastrami and they're open for breakfast too.

Boston Pork Butt

I thought I clicked on the CNBC link by mistake.

As for your original question, you might try Western Beef. There's one in West Boca (23072 Sandalfoot Plaza Dr, Boca Raton,FL 33428 Mon - Sun 7am-10pm (561) 470-1157) and one in Pembrook Pines (8030 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024 Mon - Sun 7am-10pm (954) 437-8330).

East Coast BBQ in Pompano Beach

It's not a rumor Charlie. Karen and I drove down for lunch last Saturday and when we got there we couldn't tell if they were open. So I went inside and ended up speaking with the owner who said he had closed up the previous day. Apparently his business has been way off since January when they started construction on a bank branch by tearing up the parking lot in front of the restaurant. The spot he was in wasn't great to begin with and this certainly didn't help. He tried to make some sort of accommodation with his landlord but when that didn't happen he decided to close before getting in too deep.

He did say he planned to reopen and would be looking for a location a little further north but who knows. Maybe he'd be interested in the empty Smokehouse location on Federal in Boca.

Marumi Sushi or Yakko San?

Karen and I enjoyed both, making the drive down from Boca but we've been semi-regular customers at Marumi for years. We went to Yakko San once in their old location and thought it was good (then again, clams in sake and tempura oysters aren't things we'd probably order). The place was packed but after a wait we got seats at the bar and enjoyed the food and watching the chefs prepare the different dishes. That said, we've haven't been back to Yakko San.

We really like Marumi and usually order off of the Specials board. We love the sashimi and the cooked items too. For a while we used to order the whole fish and asked the chefs to prepare it however they felt best. Our first night there we picked a good-sized hog snapper and enjoyed it prepared eight or nine different ways. On other nights we had a scorpion fish and a shovel nosed lobster. Both were a real treat prepared several different ways. All the whole fish are caught by a local diver and delivered nightly.

On other nights we've enjoyed abalone, scallop, giant clam prepared two ways, jumbo oyster, seafood stuffed eggplant with miso cheese, and a pork intestine stew that was a revelation (but probably not for pescatarians).

The chef-owners (Teruhiko Iwasaki and Tetsu Hayakawa) are great to talk to if you can sit at the bar and catch them in a quiet moment. Their staff is friendly and efficient and were very helpful when we were newcomers.

For us, this is an easy decision - it's Marumi every time. Well worth the 50 mile round-trip drive from Boca.

bamboo fire--delray

I'm okay but Karen and I are really disappointed that we missed the dinner. Sorry we had to drop out at the last-minute. From your pictures, the food looks great. What did you all like best?

Karen and I are probably going to go for dinner on Saturday night but it won't be the same without the Chowhound group.

Sorry due to emergency Rick & I will not be
able to join you tonight

Delray Beach - Coming Soon, New Openings This Fall!

Thanks. We'll try to check it out this weekend if things aren't too crazy with the Garlic Fest.

What are the best dishes at Bamboo Fire Grill?

Just three words - Curry Grouper Cheeks!

Karen and I went for dinner Friday night and they had grouper cheeks on the Specials board (who knew they had a Specials board?) along with frogs legs, and some other items. I asked if I could have them in a curry and the results were outstanding along with the okra fried rice and the callaloo. Karen had the grilled conch in a butter and caper sauce that's one of her favorites.

Delray Beach - Coming Soon, New Openings This Fall!

CFB - Karen and I love good Middle Eastern food. Is Sefi on NW 2nd Ave? Not sure where the old Taste was.

Looking for Authentic Peruvian Food in Broward like Chalan on the Beach in Miami.

I’m not familiar with Chalan, but if you’re willing to venture across the Broward border into Boca Raton, there’s an excellent Peruvian restaurant on Federal Highway – La Rosa Nautica. They offer a fine selection of Peruvian steak and seafood dishes including the Tacu Tacu you desire. You’ll also find a variety of different ceviche dishes and they have one of our favorites - Anticuchos (grilled chunks of beef heart) as an appetizer.

There’s a discussion of La Rosa Nautica on this thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/553411

And here’s the recent New Times review: http://tinyurl.com/6ab5n2f

Karen and I go for lunch or dinner several times a month and have never been disappointed. You can find the menu here: http://www.idine.com/details.htm?merchantId=95737&menu=true

La Rosa Nautica, 515 NE 20th Street, Boca Raton, FL 33431, (561) 296-1413

(Please ignore the auto-links below. It's a Chowhound feature that doesn't really work)

White truffles

Karen and I shared a white truffle risotto last Saturday night at Sapporisimo that was outstanding.

Argentango - anybody been?

I think the Boca location is already closed.

Fried Whole Belly Clams

I've never ordered the fried clams at Boston's but the other meals I've tried have been just okay. IMHO Boston's is more about the location but the food is decent. That said, we'll still have to try the fried clams someday because it's so close to home.

The fried clams at Kelly's Landing are very good and so is the chowder. Karen is from the Boston area and these are her favorites in SoFla. We make the drive from Boca fairly regularly to satisfy her need for a fried clam fix.

la rosa nautica NOT inca grill....boca

OysterHo - Try this: http://www.idine.com/details.htm?merchantId=95737&menu=true

It looks like an older version of the current menu but it's pretty close. Karen and I really like this place and go for lunch and dinner fairly frequently. They have a real talent for cooking skirt steak and seafood (or in the case of the ceviche, not cooking) and Karen really enjoys the Tacu-Tacu.

Deck 84 Delray Beach

According to Rapoport's website (http://rapoportsrg.com/), Deck 84 opens November 20th.

They also have a Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/deck84

Anyone been to Gabose for Korean? Looking for good eats in Fort Lauderdale...

Karen and I went to Gabose for dinner for the first time a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. While many of the individual dishes are over $20, we thought the entire meal was very reasonable for what you get. We had the large Korean-style crepe with mixed seafood and scallions, a spicy pork dish, and a fish soup along with all of the sides that are traditionally a part of a Korean meal. We had food to take home and with tax, tip, and a couple of glasses of wine the bill came to less than $80.

While I don’t know enough about Korean food to vouch for the authenticity, we really enjoyed what we ordered and we’ll make the drive from Boca again soon. The service was good and was very helpful considering our relative lack of knowledge about Korean food.

If you want something a little further south and west, John Linn just reviewed Myung Ga Tofu & Barbecue in Weston (http://tinyurl.com/3yagahx ).

BBQ truck in West Palm

The BBQ truck is back at Bedner's this Saturday, September 24th with a new name "Porky and Beth's BBQ" and a web site http://www.porkyandbethsbbq.com/ They'll be selling pulled pork sandwiches for $4.00 (reg. $5.50) and they've expanded their menu.

They're "open Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 until food's gone"

rec needed from Boynton Beach to WPB

freakerdude - I haven't eaten at the Old Key Lime House but I was told that this is an outdoors restaurant. Is sweating an issue on date night?

Is sushi an option? If so I recommend Sushi Bon (304 E Ocean Ave, Lantana, FL 33462 561-540-8125). Karen and I had dinner there a few weeks ago and thought it was very good. Their grilled squid made Clean Plate Charlie's 100 Favorite Dishes (http://snipurl.com/10zqs5 ) and they have a very good selection of fresh fish for sushi and sashimi as well as a number of really good (but not over-the-top) rolls.

Looking for cheap seafood restaurants in Fort Lauderdale..... REALLY CHEAP!

Try Catfish Deweys (http://www.catfishdeweys.com/ ) for good, inexpensive seafood and southern cooking. Check the menu on their website, they have several AYCE specials on different nights for your big eater.

Sardines in Miami

The Whole Foods in Boca has whole sardines available most weeks. You might try the one near you.

...and let me second the grilled sardines at Marumi. We had them on special a couple of months ago and they were very good.

Fried chicken, collard greens, and mac and cheese

Catfish Deweys (http://www.catfishdeweys.com/ ) It's kind of a dive and is best known for its catfish and other seafood, but they serve very good fried chicken and offer collards and mac & cheese among other sides.

Turkish?Arabic Restaurants....the best??? (so. Florida)

If you like Lebanese style food you might try al-Salam Mediterranean Restaurant & Grocery (http://al-salamrestaurant.com/new/ ). They're in the Plantation Crossroads Plaza 1816 N. University Drive, Plantation, FL 33322 (954) 916-5193. It's right on the north-east corner of Sunrise and University but set back so the plaza can be a little hard to find.

It's the best Lebanese restaurant we've found here in SoFla and it's all halal food. The prices are very good as well.

Breakfast Sunday Morning in Orlando

We’re headed up to Orlando for a quick weekend visit and thanks to your postings we’ve got some good choices for Saturday night dinner (Nile, Lac Viet, or Cedars). But now we need to find someplace for breakfast Sunday morning between Lake Buena Vista and Universal.

We plan to hit the park early so someplace that opens at 7 or 8am would be best. I saw recommendations for Delish and First Watch (not my favorite). Am I missing anything else?

Thanks!

Quick reco for a good bite tonight between Lauderdale airport and Deerfield?

Here are two suggestions not far from the Ft Lauderdale airport:

D’Angelo – 4215 N Federal Highway, Oakland Park FL 33308 (954-561-7300). They’re open until 11pm and the food is very good. Italian small plates and some very interesting pizzas. (http://www.pizzadangelo.com/home.htm)

Kelley’s Landing – 1305 SE 17th St Ft Lauderdale, FL 33316 (954-760-7009). They’re open until 10pm and do a nice job with New England style seafood. (http://www.kellyslandingseafood.com)

bamboo fire--delray

Karen and I missed the first Bamboo Fire Chowdown and we regretted it for the past year. This was a great way to spend an evening. Really good food combined with really good company made for a memorable night. With such a large group we were able to try a lot of what Bamboo Fire has to offer and Donald and Beverly were at the top of their game. The grilled conch was so tender you could cut it with your fork, the curried goat was excellent, I ended up having seconds on the dhal, and the meatballs (curried and jerk) were delicious as usual. Beverly’s mac and cheese had that nice crust that’s her trademark and the veggies were just excellent. This is the second time I’ve had callaloo and I’m a big fan. The Chinese long beans were a treat too. And yes, as others have mentioned, the leftovers (especially the callaloo) were better the next day.

For Karen and me, the food at Bamboo Fire is always great but what made this evening stand out was the opportunity to meet the other ‘hounds. We’ve been reading posts by CFB, smartie, Oyster Ho, BAFU, and the rest for years and it was a treat to meet them all in person.

Finally, we all owe Charlie a big thank you for getting this all organized. Really well done!
