The Best Bread In Nassau County
That's too bad. I grew up with two great Italian bread bakeries in Glen Cove.
There was the Landing Bakery ... in the neighborhood of the same name ... then there was the aformentioned bakery near St. Rocco's RC Church ... run by a man named Giambruno ...was a junior football coach and one of his kids became a local cop.
We used to call the small loaves "juniors" and they were warm from the oven.
Mmmm.
Five Guys burgers coming to Park Slope
If you just want a burger in the Slope, head to the Purity or the 24-hour donut shop right down the street. 5 Guys is just another themed burger joint that doesn't come close to In-N-Out. And they're slower than In-N-Out, to boot. And at either end of the Slope there's a McDonald's and [just a little further out northeast or south] a couple of White Castles. Yes, I know about the hipster burgers at Bonnie's and DuMont.
And on geographic Long Island - Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk counties - there are many better burgers, including Joe's in Flushing and the great All-American in Massapequa.
In search of good fried clams in the NYC/Long Island area
Of course those HoJo memories were that of a child going to lunch after Sunday church. The palate is much better now [I think].
Also - the East Norwich HoJo's on NY 25A was turned into a IHOP, then an independent pancake/diner type house. You can still tell those converted 1950's HoJo's by the architecture ... still expect to see an orange roof, Simple Simon and the pie-man. Rothmann's is next door ... at the corner of NY 106.
Sea Cliff Mini Mart?
Not like it's a chow thing. It's an arts + crafts street fair, with the usual sausage + peppers crap for food. I've been going there for too many years now.
You'll get better food at the Oyster Bay Oyster Fest in a couple weeks ... fresh oysters, of course.
If you go to the Sea Cliff Coffee Co. you might make out OK.
Hero Place near 4th Ave/9th Street
second the roast beef
catene is old school. and the food is old-school too. no park slope frou-frou little bites here. real food for real people, right off the subway. and fresh.
breakfast and lunch only.
not open sundays.
Fairway coming to Westchester, could it be true?
It's just this simple:
Fairway will kill Stew's. And make WF look like Pathmark.
Fairway should get its own exit off the Thruway.
In fact, Fairway should be its own incorporated village!
Best black and white cookie in BK?
Lassen + Hennigs in Brooklyn Heights on Montague Street has an interesting twist on the shiny black-and-white cookie. It's more like a mini black-and-white cake, with creamy icing instead on top. Fresh, and cold. Perfect.
Five Guys Burgers coming to Montague Street!
I agree with Bob. Overpriced. Undercooked fries. I've had much better burgers for less money. And I had a regular burger with the same amount of condiments as you did. Service was OK, I've had better at In-N-Out and locally at that burger joint on Main Street in Flushing that's much like In-N-Out.
And my belly is fighting a queasy urge right now.
Cocotte: downhill..
Actually, Cocotte is downhill from me .. I live up the hill in the Slope.
I always thought it was a nice neighborhood joint, nothing more, nothing less. Went for dinner a few times and was satisfied. Don't do brunch - it's overrated no matter where one goes.
Finally, DiFara's
You've scooped the world!
Nice slice .. bet it tasted really good.
Perfect Brooklyn summer day!!
DiFara's Closed by DOH, where can a pizza-lover go?!
As of Saturday June 23, Mr. Dominick DeMarco is toiling away in Midwood .. there's another new thread with photos ... first slice from the first pie!
Good Eats Near Hofstra?
Taking me back to MY Hofstra days ...
If you want your White Castle fix, just go west through Hemp-head on the Turnpike and there is a White Castle in West Hempstead. Can't miss it.
Mmmmmmm .... Sliders .....
The Coliseum Deli across from the Mausoleum is good for a quick fix.
Queens boy trying to re-experience childhood foods
I'd say hit New Park Pizzeria in Howard Beach for a couple slices ...
Eddie's in Forest Hills for dessert ...
and Bagel Oasis on the south LIE [Horace Harding] service road near Flushing for bagels and stuff to being home for breakfast.
Maybe next day a few sliders at the White Castle in Queens Blvd near the old round Macy's can fill the hole any Wetson's left.
pizza in howard beach, queens
New Park is always nice for a slice or two, driving back to the city from JFK after a long trip. Feels like a home slice. Basic pizza joint ... always fresh pies to be had. A basic slice, yes, but it's just about a prototype of your above average basic slice. You don't have to fold it and let the grease flow onto your plate, like some other slices. Nor do you have to wait two hours for it.
Couple slices and a Coke make it real good.
FYI: Anyone with Google can find out what happened a generation ago near there ... which had nothing whatsover to do with the pies and who makes them.
Shamrock Shake?
Believe it or else ... the McDonald's smack in the center of Cork City, Ireland had Shamrock Shakes for St. Patrick's Day. True story.
Steakhouse advice
Give me Luger's with a wad-full of cash. Order the bacon. And desserts mit schlag. 15 year olds would like to hear that.
In Midtown ... I like Ben Benson's. 'Cause he's a good guy. Have the kids ask him about the football Giants.
On the other side of Midtown - Sparks. Tell 'em about the history. A little Big Paulie will go a long way.
Can't go wrong with any of them.
Favourites at Shake Shack?
When I'm on line or waiting I make like I'm on line at some In-N-Out Burger in Los Angeles, with the temps in the 80's or so. Then I order a double shack burger, fries and a shake, and it's like I'm in la-la-land again.
Best Chili
Daisy Mae's BBQ [store on 46th and 11th; carts in Rockefeller Center when it warms up] serves great chili - all meat no beans.
Survey: Where do you shop in Park Slope?
In the Slope - definitely the 5th Avenue Key Food. Clean, fresh, good selection, including stuff from the Emerald, British, and Caribbean isles. If I'm in a pinch, I head to the Met Foods across from PS 321. I'll stay away from everything else - too crummy/expensive/twee.
But I usually shop at Red Hook's Fairway. The dream city market.
Stango's in Glen Cove- Any one been?
I grew up eating at Stango's. Great, old-fashioned family neighborhood restaurant. It's in the part of Glen Cove that is an historic Italian neighborhood called the Orchard. It's casual at anytime ... good pasta dishes and nice standard pizza ... old-school, red-checkered tablecloth, red sauce type place. Been around for close to 90 years.
health food store on Long Island
Rising Tide in Glen Cove on Forest Ave.
One of the pioneers. Should have all you need.
Pardo's Mini-Review
This sounds like a winner for food, anyhow. Always searching for good arroz con pollo.
What's the address?
So we can say, as they say, "Thank you Don Pardo!"
Decent Bagel in Forest Hills?
Close by, on the south service road of the LIE (aka Horace Hardling Blvd heading east) is the immortal Bagel Oasis.
Outstanding Italian Salumeria -- Razzanos in Glen Cove
I'm a native. Razzano's is the best I've seen in any Long Island Italian neighborhood. I remember the meatball parm heroes of my youth - so huge that it took two days to eat all of it. Mozzarella of all types - freshly made in the back, flown in from the mother country, etc. Many a Razzano saus-eeege has been grilled at a family picnic.
And I'm not even Italian, though if you grew up Catlick in the old Glen Cove pre-1980, you were either Italian (St. Rocco's) Irish (St. Patrick's) or Polish (St. Hyacinth's).
And the smell - so fresh, the cheeses and the meats and all the other stuff. A cant-miss classic.
In search of good fried clams in the NYC/Long Island area
How was Crabby Dan's in Glen Head?
FYI when I was a kid I got fried clams at HoJo's, which was just about everywhere but close to me in Roslyn and East Norwich.
New to Sunnyside. Need info about EVERYTHING.
Un "slider" avec les pommes frites.
Avec le Coca-Cola.
good places that say NEW YORK, NEW YORK for not-too-adventurous tourists
1) The Grand Central Oyster Bar. Sit at the bar where they make the oyster stews. The -real- experience.
2) Yes, either of the two Rockefeller Center restaurants that border the rink - but only when the plaza is a rink, not an outdoor summer bar. And NEVER when there's a certain Xmas tree there.
Mask, Glen Cove, LI
I'm a native. Mask was a diner. Not a stainless-steel NJ type, but one nonetheless, a generation ago. Same location, next to an old gas station and across the street from a funeral home and a car dealership. I've even got a postcard.
The Land Rover dealer used to sell Chevrolets in the '60's + 70's.
Anyway, I'd like to try that pizza at Mask. Thin crust rules, and it brings out the flavor of the sauce and the toppings, not the typical LI doughy slice.
Mask, Glen Cove, LI
Haven't been there yet, but to told Glen Covers (of which I am one) the location is still the Frontier Diner. Chip away the facade and the interior walls ... and you get a late '50's diner.
Used to love their burgers and pancakes as a kid.
New to Sunnyside. Need info about EVERYTHING.
And of course, on Queens Blvd at 43rd Street, there's always Chateau Blanc, a/k/a Castillo Blanco. Nice.
