Tow amazing discoveries in the last 24 hrs - awesome Indian food and a new Asian market

I'm batting a thousand here. The restaurant is called "Flavors of India" not "Taste of India".

casual gems / dives

I really like the tacos and 2 for 1 margaritas as Saritas on Freret. It's a bit of a dive, but cheap and tasty.

Also, I recently discovered (see post from yesterday) Taste of India on Cleary. It's definitely a dive, but they had super yummy and cheap Indian food.

Tow amazing discoveries in the last 24 hrs - awesome Indian food and a new Asian market

Last night I discovered Taste of India. It is this divey little place on Cleary in Metairie that actually had GOOD Indian food! It was so delicious. I overheard the owner talking and I think he might be going to sell the place. :(
So, if you love Indian food, you may want to check it out before it is gone.

Also, in Metairie, I came across the Golden Asian Market on N. Arnoult. It was pretty big, clean, and seemed to have a pretty extensive selection of Asian food.

Has anyone else been to these new places? What was your impression of them?

Hydrogenated King Cake

I just wanted to write in and wrap up my part of this discussion now that Mardi Gras is over. I think I really liked Breaux Mart the best for a good and affordable king cake without trans fats.

I never made it to Gracious Bakery. There's always next year.

I did try the Cake Cafe goat cheese and apple king cake. It was delicious. I didn't ask about hydrogenated oils, but it was pretty yummy. It was a little too rich and sweet to be my favorite, but it was good.

I also really enjoyed a cake from the Hi-Do bakery. I have no idea about trans fats with them either because I had it at a party. They make the best french bread in the entire world and they may make my favorite king cake, but I would have to try it again to be sure.

I enjoyed the discussion, so thanks guys.

Also, I'd love to hear more about this Gracious king cake and where I can get my hands on one.

Hydrogenated King Cake

Thank you, Chowhound Team. I'm sorry I got offended of being accused of not being from New Orleans (I am from here). Also, thank you to Kibbles for defending me and also for contributing to the conversation about king cakes.

I had also hoped for a discussion of king cakes. I had just hoped to also discuss the ingredients a little bit.

So, back to it...

Manny Randazzo's - this week I revisited an old favorite, Randazzo's. We got the Royal which contains four flavors - apple, cream cheese, lemon, and strawberry each in their own quadrant of the cake. The cake was yummy, but I came to realize that I like the texture and flavor of the Breaux Mart cake better. Also, the Randazzo's cake is more than double the price of the Breaux Mart cake, so that hurts too. Randazzo's prints their ingredients on the bag which is helpful. Unfortunately, they use hydrogenated oils in their cakes.

Hydrogenated King Cake

Every year about this time of year, I start sampling different king cakes trying to decide which ones I like the best. This year, I have decided to try to determine if there are trans fats in the cakes while ranking my favs. I can hardly believe people are still using hydrogenated oils since they are so bad that the FDA is about to ban them entirely, but so be it. Here's what I have so far:

Please feel free to write in any of you start to look into this, too.

Whole Foods Market - I had the chocolate king cake and it was okay. The cake itself was a little dry, but the chocolate part was yummy. Overall, their king cake just doesn't stand out. However, no trans fats used, so that's good.

Sucré - I find their king cake aesthetically pleasing, but otherwise dry and underwhelming. I called them to find out about whether they used hydrogenated oils. They were very nice and went to some effort to find out for me. However, the answer was surprisingly YES! So, know that if you eat a sucré king cake you are getting some trans fats. Enjoy the heart disease.

Breaux Mart - Believe it or not, they are y favorite this year. We got the cream cheese stuffed, and it was moist, sweet, and divine. I called the store to find out about the hydrogenated factor and they said they were reading the ingredients, and, in fact, there were no hydrogenated oils in their king cake! This is great news because it is cheap and yummy!

Again, if anyone else cares about this topic, please write in and share your thoughts. I'm really interested in what others think about this.

Organic produce

I'm sad nobody replied to this. I guess this means you can't get high quality organic produce here in New Orleans.

Organic produce

I'm looking for a place where I can get good organic produce. I have an older baby and a 2.5 year old, and I would really prefer to give them organic fruits and vegetables. But, Whole Foods is so expensive. Plus, sometimes their produce isn't even that great! Does anyone have suggestions for good organic produce in the area?

Also, I've been to a couple of farmers markets, but the vendors weren't organic from what I saw.

Cafe Du Monde menu?

Cafe du monde or morning call are the originals. Cafe beignet is quite new. No real history to the place.

I like all the places mentioned. Since I'm in Metairie, I must give a shout out to pho orchid and pho nola. Pho Nola has my favorite ban mi.

Sweetbreads

Hey y'all. I just wanted to report in on my birthday dinner and how it went. I'm ashamed to admit I didn't take yall's advice and went to Iris instead. I'm happy to say, however, that the sweetbreads were delicious. We also had foie gras, hangar steak, lamb, and a poached pear appetizer. All were delicious. Thanks do much for the suggestions and I will definitely try them sometime. By the way, I tried but I couldn't get a reservation at Bayona or we would have gone there.

Where Should We Avoid?

You will be safe walking anywhere in the quarter as long as you aren't "pass out" wasted or wearing giant diamonds everywhere. Also, don't walk in the dark all alone. But I'd say don't walk in the dark all alone in any city. We know that tourism is a top revenue source for our city and thus keep the quarter very well patrolled. Don't let the scary stories scare you. Frenchman is totally safe. Further into the marigny you'll want transportation after 11 on and same goes for uptown. But in the quarter and down Frenchman, you'll be fine walking. I'm 5'0" and scrawny...I'm not tough, you can trust me. :)

my New Orleans trip report (late March 2012)

I was there that day, too! Same thing with the waiter, too! Also, the waiter we had at domenica one night handled Michael J Fox being there in a similar manner. Very professional.

San Francisco Hound Coming to New Orleans: Please Critique My List for My First Visit!!!

Don't worry. The 4th weekend in May is not jazzfest. The 4th of May is jazzfest. Things will be a little crowded because it's a big travel weekend, but not jazzfest-crowded.

Thanks for the suggestions! What makes the sweetbreads at Bayona so special? I Have actually never been there and tend to see mixed reviews on the place.

Dinner for 17; guest of honor is kosher

I second this post that domenica is the place for a delicious meal that can meet the guidelines of kashrut. But, be forewarned that it will not be a "local" flavor, but more an Italian flavor.

Short Drive from New Orleans into Mississippi

Gosh, this is 2 years too late, but I wanted to thank y'all for the suggestions. My grandfather died that week and we never made it to Hattiesburg. But, looking at this post, I'll have to try to get out there. Thanks, y'all!

Sweetbreads

I live here in New Orleans and love dining out when I can afford it. I really love sweetbreads. I'm looking to go out for my birthday next week and I'm wondering: Who has the best sweetbreads? I've had them at a couple of places, but I'm wondering what y'all think. Also, my birthday is on a Monday, so a place open on Monday would be nice, but I could always go out on a different night, too.

Artichoke Recommendations

Eggs sardou at Commander's Palace brunch is one of the finest dished in the city and definitely the finest artichoke dish, in my opinion. Their brunch is delicious. Make sure you call ahead to male a reservation and when you do, ask them if it would be possible to have the eggs sardou on the menu. It is often not on the menu because they only use fresh artichokes. Trust me on this one. Unless you don't like eggs, you'll love this'

Vegan eating in NOLA

If you haven't already visited, I have 2 suggestions.

Cafe Bamboo is on Esplanade under the Dragon's Den. They have an all vegan and vegetarian menu which I very much enjoy (if it is still open).

Also, Veggie Fest is this weekend, so y'all may want to check it out if you're coming this weekend. www.nolaveggiefest.com

Best place to eat crawfish

Today I went to a place called Smitty's in Kenner at the intersection of West Esplanade and Williams Blvd. I found the hot boiled crawfish to be delicious and very affordable! However, if you're staying in the FQ, and you would rather not have to drive too far (even if you aren't opposed to it), you may want to just go to Deanie's. They have boiled crawfish, and it's pretty tasty!

Rehearsal dinner ideas

Mother's Next Door was where we had ours. Great New Orleans food. Seafood, jambalaya, poboys, etc. It's not outdoors, so if that's what you're wanting, then nevermind. But it was fabulous. Everyone loved the food and had a great time.

Best Chocolate Pie??

I am looking for a place to buy a chocolate pie for my birthday. I asked my husband for a chocolate silk pie, and neither of us has any clue where to find one.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
