Sweetbreads

That's good to know, thanks!

Sweetbreads

Hey y'all. I just wanted to report in on my birthday dinner and how it went. I'm ashamed to admit I didn't take yall's advice and went to Iris instead. I'm happy to say, however, that the sweetbreads were delicious. We also had foie gras, hangar steak, lamb, and a poached pear appetizer. All were delicious. Thanks do much for the suggestions and I will definitely try them sometime. By the way, I tried but I couldn't get a reservation at Bayona or we would have gone there.

Where Should We Avoid?

You will be safe walking anywhere in the quarter as long as you aren't "pass out" wasted or wearing giant diamonds everywhere. Also, don't walk in the dark all alone. But I'd say don't walk in the dark all alone in any city. We know that tourism is a top revenue source for our city and thus keep the quarter very well patrolled. Don't let the scary stories scare you. Frenchman is totally safe. Further into the marigny you'll want transportation after 11 on and same goes for uptown. But in the quarter and down Frenchman, you'll be fine walking. I'm 5'0" and scrawny...I'm not tough, you can trust me. :)

Sweetbreads

Please tell me more about the MiLa sweetbreads, and the rest of the meal, too. Thanks!

my New Orleans trip report (late March 2012)

I was there that day, too! Same thing with the waiter, too! Also, the waiter we had at domenica one night handled Michael J Fox being there in a similar manner. Very professional.

San Francisco Hound Coming to New Orleans: Please Critique My List for My First Visit!!!

Don't worry. The 4th weekend in May is not jazzfest. The 4th of May is jazzfest. Things will be a little crowded because it's a big travel weekend, but not jazzfest-crowded.

Sweetbreads

Thanks for the suggestions! What makes the sweetbreads at Bayona so special? I Have actually never been there and tend to see mixed reviews on the place.

Dinner for 17; guest of honor is kosher

I second this post that domenica is the place for a delicious meal that can meet the guidelines of kashrut. But, be forewarned that it will not be a "local" flavor, but more an Italian flavor.

Short Drive from New Orleans into Mississippi

Gosh, this is 2 years too late, but I wanted to thank y'all for the suggestions. My grandfather died that week and we never made it to Hattiesburg. But, looking at this post, I'll have to try to get out there. Thanks, y'all!

Sweetbreads

I live here in New Orleans and love dining out when I can afford it. I really love sweetbreads. I'm looking to go out for my birthday next week and I'm wondering: Who has the best sweetbreads? I've had them at a couple of places, but I'm wondering what y'all think. Also, my birthday is on a Monday, so a place open on Monday would be nice, but I could always go out on a different night, too.

Artichoke Recommendations

Eggs sardou at Commander's Palace brunch is one of the finest dished in the city and definitely the finest artichoke dish, in my opinion. Their brunch is delicious. Make sure you call ahead to male a reservation and when you do, ask them if it would be possible to have the eggs sardou on the menu. It is often not on the menu because they only use fresh artichokes. Trust me on this one. Unless you don't like eggs, you'll love this'

Vegan eating in NOLA

If you haven't already visited, I have 2 suggestions.

Cafe Bamboo is on Esplanade under the Dragon's Den. They have an all vegan and vegetarian menu which I very much enjoy (if it is still open).

Also, Veggie Fest is this weekend, so y'all may want to check it out if you're coming this weekend. www.nolaveggiefest.com

Best place to eat crawfish

Today I went to a place called Smitty's in Kenner at the intersection of West Esplanade and Williams Blvd. I found the hot boiled crawfish to be delicious and very affordable! However, if you're staying in the FQ, and you would rather not have to drive too far (even if you aren't opposed to it), you may want to just go to Deanie's. They have boiled crawfish, and it's pretty tasty!

Rehearsal dinner ideas

Mother's Next Door was where we had ours. Great New Orleans food. Seafood, jambalaya, poboys, etc. It's not outdoors, so if that's what you're wanting, then nevermind. But it was fabulous. Everyone loved the food and had a great time.

Best Chocolate Pie??

Yes, and I do love cooking. My husband, on the other hand very much wants to buy one since it'll be for my b-day and he is intimidated about making it.

Best Chocolate Pie??

I am looking for a place to buy a chocolate pie for my birthday. I asked my husband for a chocolate silk pie, and neither of us has any clue where to find one.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

New Orleans Rehearsal Dinner

we had our dinner at Mothers on poydras street fantastic and reasonable

West End Cafe

Thank you for the information. I guess I won't be finding those recipes at any local restaurants, it seems.

West End Cafe

I didn't know a group bought it shortly after the storm. I don't know anything about what happened to it.

West End Cafe

Does anyone know what happened to the family that owned West End Cafe and whether they ever opened another restaurant after K?

They had such great seafood and other food, as well. I was just thinking about it tonight and wondering what happened...

Anyone?

Peach Buns? Baozi? Shou Tao? Where can I find them in NOLA or surrounding cities?

I have no idea, but the Hong Kong Market on the westbank has a very large selection of asian produce, groceries, etc.

Short Drive from New Orleans into Mississippi

Wow, this is great! Thanks for the advice, guys! My husband and I will definitely try to check out one of these places. Southern Fried Rabbit sounds particularly intriguing.

Any good breakfast places? I'm especially looking for early morning breakfast places.

Short Drive from New Orleans into Mississippi

Nikinik,

Thanks for the reply!

What kind of food is available at those restaurants?

Short Drive from New Orleans into Mississippi

I live here in NOLA, and my husband and I are headed out of town for a weekend in fabulous Columbia, MS. Does anyone know of any good restaurants (particularly for breakfast, but other meals are needed, too) in or near Columbia or Hattiesburg. While you're at it...what are your favorite restaurants in Mississippi in general?

There's not a board for Mississippi nor for a town there, so this could be very informative!

New Orleans Rehearsal Dinner

I had an awesome rehearsal dinner at Mother's. They have a private room next door. It was fabulous! Quality New Orleans food. We even had an open bar and it was affordable!

Healthier eating in Nola (midtown)?

Suzy, I don't disagree with you about anything you said!

I love living in New Orleans, and I love eating in New Orleans. I hope you don't take offense to my prior comments.

You can't get as many organic options at the grocery stores you listed as you can at Whole Foods, though. Especially if you are looking for something like grass or grain fed beef.

I eat all kinds of unhealthy foods in New Orleans, and I completely agree about it coming down to choices. That being said, there aren't nearly as many healthy, informed choices, and definitely not as many affordable choices as there are in SF or other healthier cities in the US.

Yes you can get grilled chicken or shrimp, but how many times can you get it on whole wheat bread or with a guarantee of no trans fats? How often do they tell you where that chicken or shrimp came from? Not too often.

Believe it or not, nowadays in other cities they do share all of that info and have a whole grain option in addition to a healthy protein.

Healthier eating in Nola (midtown)?

I know what you mean, enzosf! I grew up in New Orleans, left for 10 years, and came back a year and a half ago. After living in other places, I came to realize that the definition of "healthy" is different down here! It's hard to find foods as simple as brown rice, organic, or farm raised in restaurants down here!

I live off of Whole Foods (or Whole Paycheck as we call it) and cook all the time in order to keep the diet that makes me happy!

That being said, we've learned to make do down here. There's a great little hole in the wall called Cafe Bamboo at the river end of Esplanade near the quarter that has great veggie food.

You'll find a lot of chinese and japanese restaurants can sub brown rice.

Also, like others said, there's healthy options at a lot of restaurants (you may just have to redefine healthy). Try not to think tvery hard about sodium levels or added ingredients.

I hope this response is helpful.

The very BEST King Cake?

Do you work for them? This is an old thread and Paul's isn't even in New Orleans.

Mardi Gras Day Packages

Does anyone know of any good packages along the uptown parade route on Mardi Gras Day? I'm looking for something along the lines of: somewhat affordable with food, bathroom, drinks, and spot to watch the parade.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Bread Bakeries!?

I hate to admit this, but in a pinch I'll run to La Madeleine's for some bread. They are obviously a huge chain, but the artisan breads aren't half-bad.

I typically get bread from Whole Foods the most often because I'll be buying some cheese there, as well.

La Boulangerie has the best pastries in the city, in my opinion! I haven't bought bread there all that often.

Also, I agree with what people are saying about the New Orleans style french bread being what you'll mostly find places, and I think for that style, it doesn't get better than Hi-Do on the westbank.

Although, I'm definitely going to try Chez Pierre.
