Where to find Jaffa cakes?

Aldi's carries raspberry & orange jaffa cakes (10 oz for $2) -- made in Germany -- they're good

Where to eat goat?

how about wrigley field? i've been promoting a goat roast for a long long time

What is your city's specialty and why is it the best?

Western NY also has white (hot)dogs and whistlepigs (which are francheezies) -- additional to some Canadian specialties, like that 7 gazillion types of fudge -- the cranberry opera fudge is haunting.

Foodie on a Budget Visiting from Toronto

I'm glad you enjoyed Chicago -- there's a difference between LITTLE 3 Happiness and 3 Happiness restos -- Little 3H gets the raves -- 3 H mediocre -- little 3h is a hole in the wall on the south side of cermak; 3H a larger affair on the north side

Foodie on a Budget Visiting from Toronto

There's a 3 and 5 day pass (cheaper than $20) and will fit your schedule better.

I think you want to go to Chinatown and wander -- Little 3 Happiness generally gets fab reviews -- but soak up atmosphere;

also check out Pilsen/Little Village, again wander around soak up the atmosphere

3rd -- do a devonathon and again check out the 'hood and the restaurants -- Indian mostly, the Cuban grocery/resto La Unica is light on the wallet & has memorable flan, take lots of pictures --

I haven't done the middleeastern Kedzie crawl -- but that too should be inexpensive and very rewarding

Ice cream makers

NYTimes today (aug 6) had a great article on bag ice cream, using plastic freezer bags for both salted ice and milk/cream mixture -- 40 minutes to complete a quart

Best coffee maker under $100

I LUV the aeropress ... it's cleaner than a french press -- the hockey puck of expressed coffee goes neatly into garbage and the press just needs a rinse

Best coffee maker under $100

Aeropress ... doesn't meet criteria 1, but it's only $30 & the only coffee better is arguably the clover -- i've been roasting and grinding my own beans and this aeropress coffee is the best i've had

breakfast, lunch and dinner near palmer house hilton

Boy -- are you in luck -- there are a splendid variety of restaurants around the green mill -- next door you have the gay sports bar crew -- a little north the fat cat lounge across the street silver seafood keeping to the east side of b'way, north of silver seafood in the mall there is a inexpensive and good vietnamese restaurant, farther north again, thai pastry --- still tending north, there's the tank noodle at argyle & b'way -- if you wander down argyle a gamut of good asian (vietnamese/chinese mostly) restaurants

good eats near riviera theater?

You are so in luck -- this area is loaded with fabulous restaurants -- Demera, an ethiopian restaurant at B'Way & Lawrence, slightly north Silver Seafood Crew -- a gay sportsbar restaurant across the street, as is Fat Cat and Marigold -- this less than 5 minutes walking from the Riv. A bit farther north, Thai Pastries then the glories of Argyle Street -- with the Tank at the corner and too many fine inexpensive restaurants to name.

Which is a better foodie/restaurant/bakery area- Lincoln Square or Andersonville?

Both are areas of great character ... Lincoln Square is sooo gentrified -- but again, such a heady alchemy of Chicago ethnic w/the German & incredible Thai, but I think the Andersonville, Edgewater Uptown triangle totally toddlin ... with Marigold, Fat Cat and the upscale Ethiopian on rock n roll corner, then the plebian glories of Argyle Street and Shah on Sheridan La Fonda is white tablecloth & so is Sheba and Cotes du Rhone and Pepitones and That Little Mexican Cafe capped in Big Pink with the piss elegant charm of the restaurant therein. And I just walked on by Mei Shung's white tablecloths and Panda Panda's formica booths -- up to Granville's rib joint right across the street from what may be the best cuppa joe in town at Metropolis -- big secret -- this is the area where Hillary Clinton was born -- and we all know she won't carry her ward because she's never never done latte with Alderman Smith at Metropolis. There's a recent condo development 5700 block of Winthrop just east of the el called "Rodham Manor"

Not quite buffalo -- but righteous wings nevertheless at the sixty five restaurants -- 3 huge wings -- last time I went it was 2.65 -- no breading, simply fried naked -- standard amerchinese sauces -- but, hey, bring your own blu cheez & celery, but as an upstate noo yawker by birth, it'll work.

Air Poppers/Coffee Roasters

All the air poppers mentioned at sweetmarias are no longer sold ... presto makes the redenbacker that looks similar ... but I don't know if it is side or bottom vented, which apparently makes a big difference

"Chicago Style Pizza"

I read in someone's food blog the other day and interesting definition of Chicago Style pizza which was not contingent on the deep dish but rather the fact that the cheese covers the other ingredients ... even a thin cracker style crust can be Chicago style if the cheese tops it all

Chicago Tipping

group i used to go out with -- standard then being take the pretax total and multiply it by 1.25 -- the result would be one's total bill -- then city taxes went up, so the new standard is something like 28% of the pretax total

Never been to Chicago, need your help

Toronto is so sophisticated foodwise w/such an international polyglot base ... Chicago's Mexican cuisine, including varietals -- is arguably the best in the country -- Rick Bayless -- or, if you are adventurous, plan a day in Pilsen, first going to the Mexican Museum to get your bearings. Wander our Chinatown (Cermak station on the red line) stopping at Little Three Happiness, a local hole in the wall of epicurean standards -- and wander down Argyle Street (on the redline) for Vietnamese & other Asian -- and Devon Street for Indian, some Cuban.

Suggest you check out the lthforum.com and download their list of great neighborhood restaurants.

O -- ribs -- Chicago's got great ribs -- Honey 1 is accessible, but there are southside rib havens for the more adventurous.
