What is the best Mexican Restaurant chain?

Mexican is one of my favorite cuisines, anything from gourmet to street stands as long as it is appetizing. I am quite particular on how things should be prepared and have been taken to just about every mexican chain.

The best are Pappasitos and Uncle Julios. These places you can get authentic beans and sides, not just scary gloopy refried beans and rice that I always skip. They both have all the gringo type dishes- burritos, tacos etc. But, we're usually more adventurous. Pappasito's has an amazing selection of grilled foods; shrimp, lobster, quail, and scallops. Those are my favorite mex chains.

For more middle of the road and america chains, on the border is fairly good for what it is.

Do you have a favorite I'm-alone-now-so-nobody-will-know favorite dish?

Thanks, but she made it up and i can make it with my eyes closed! It's bisquick, milk, coarse chopped gourmet pepperoni, diced green pepper, onion, mushroom, 6 cheese italian blend, and parm reggiano. Everyone I describe it too thinks is sounds so good, albiet lowbrow! Oh well!

Casseroles!! I wish I still let myself eat this, Bisquick Pepperoni Pie. My Mom made it up about 25 years ago and it is so delicious. It's nowhere near the ones they list on the website!. Also, tortilla lasagna! Indulging used to be so much fun!

Fave fast food guilty pleasure? [moved from Food Media and News board]

Fries! Either curly fries from Jack in the Box or steak fries with skins. Also, Arby's had these southwest eggrolls for a short time and they were awesome! I really should let myself indulge more...

Cheesecake Factory..I am being forced to go

Just went the other day, the first time in about 10 years. I used to love it! We split appetizers during their cheap happy hour. I fell in LOVE with their tempura ahi roll, hold the white sauce. Everything else was beyond bad. One nibble of the fried mac and cheese turned me off from everything else. Frankly repulsive!

We also ordered the chicken potstickers and quesadillas. The quesadillas were sent back because they do not have true salsa, only pico. Didn't try the dumplings, everyone said they were fine and straight from a freezer bag.

I used to love their salads, especially the asian chicken.

Best place for Lobster?*~

We ended up at Bonefish. For $27 we both got twin tails and two sides. The tails were better than average, about 4 oz each. But, we won't be rushing back soon for them. For sides we had the whipped potatoes and the au gratin. Yikes, when the whipped arrived they appeared to be a scoop of some freaky cafeteria concoction and those were sent back immediately. The au gratin were the very best thing I have had in years. We didn't bother with dessert or appetizers- couldn't even finish both lobster tails and didn't even get more than three bites of potatoes!

I think next we'll try the tempura lobster at flemings!

Beef Wellington in Phoenix?

Seen traditional beef and a salmon rendition on Salt Cellar's menu in South Scottsdale. Fleming's also has their own take on the dish- without the pate. Seems to be a great dish that is disappearing from menus.....

Thanks for the replies! I've actually had very good steak at steakhouses before.... upscale chain and privately owned.

Has anyone tried the lobster at Bonefish?

yardhouse pub???

Went to the North Scottsdale Location back in Feb. We started with the crab cakes- quite good with awesome fruity sauce. Shrimp Ceasar salad was fine and the Miso Sea Bass was OUTSTANDING. We've had this dish at many fine restaurants, and their rendition was on par. However, pricing did seem to be off. The sea bass was $25 and I paid about $27 for the same dish at Nobu!

Lobster in Indy?

Hello all,

It's time for a lobster dinner and we have no idea where the best spot in town is!! We've thought of Oceanaire, Fleming's, and Mitchell's. What do you all reccommend? Is there a gem I am overlooking?

Through a search on CHOW, I read Bonefish does a great lobster dinner. Any reports?

Thanks

PF Chang's - what to order?

We tend to keep it light with the Shrimp dumplings. Get them pan fried, they are so much better than steamed and the difference in calories is less than a stick of gum! We also enjoy the ahi. If feeling indulgent, Moo shu is very good too. We also love chang's spicy chicken and the crispy honey shrimp/chicken. Very removed from Chinese cusine, but still yummy

Chili's

I would consider myself quite a chowhound, but I really do enjoy Chili's for what it is. I actually enjoy the majority of their appetizers, yet no one will ever go with me! Their southwest eggrolls are delicious! Chicken crispers are perfectly battered, although sometimes super greasy. Nachos are simple enough with ample cheese. I even think they have a pretty good buffalo sauce and shanghai sauce for the chicken bites. I love the side of healthy black beans too. Their french fries are some of my favorites......

PF Chang --Disappointing meal

Absolutely ridiculous that you were charged twice, unless you made a large dent in each dish! Still, I would have said something. You really have no recourse now that we are a few days removed, although if you are still very upset it could not hurt you to complain.

From what I've gathered, you are sticking with vegetarian dishes. I have had a few good meals there, but every dish was fish, shellfish, or a lighter chicken dish.

Favorite White Pizza? (PHX)

How are we defining "white pizza" here? Anything without a red sauce base? I know there are quite a few interepretations, I just thought white pizzas lacked all tomatos, no?!

Your "go to" convenience food is.....

I was too embarrassed to say it myself, but BISQUICK! Behold the bible to my comfort food cravings. You can do endless things with bisquick, great one dish suppers!!

I also us store bought demi glace as a base for many different sauces.

Best French Fries?

Fries could possibly be my favorite food, I am not very keen on wasting calories so I don't indulge unless they are worth it.

Food Court finds: Arbys and Jack in the box make awesome curly fries when fresh! Love "boardwalk fries" and the skin on fries from "The great steak and Potato"

Casual dining chains: Chilis fries are nice and seasoned well. Claim jumper has wonderful salt and pepper shoestring fries that are so good dipped in salsa ranch!

Haven't been in years, but Eli's in Scottsdale is awesome. We've enjoyed salad and salmon sliders. They're known for their filet sliders. Amazing homemade dressings too!

Breakfast in North Scottsdale?

I am partial to LE PEEP at hayden and via de ventura. Great family owned joint and they do an amazing job accomodating all guests. I;ve been there with some ridiculously picky people, and the waitstaff makes every effort to please!

Looking for a place with great salads (PHX)

Z-TEJAS has some wonderful salads. I LOVE the southwest ceasar at ZTEJAS. I have them swap out the chicken for grilled shrimp! It's delcious! The jerk chicken salad with feta and a sesame vinagrette is also awesome. My friends also rave about the chopped chicken salad.

Favorite fast-food or fast-casual salad?

Years ago I loved the ceasar salad at Corner Bakery in Chicago, mind you it is actually much healthier to get a six piece nugget from McDonalds! I stay away from salads at those places now*~

Carrabba's Italian Grill

I have never been to Olive Garden, and haven;t been to Maggianos or Buca in years so the only chain I can compare it to is Macaroni Grill. I find the quality far superior, they use large shrimp as opposed to MG's medium sized ones. I also really think that carrabbas makes a great caesar salad.

What if you don't like the food?

It really depends on the situation and restaurant. Always mention it to the waiter within the first minutes, or management assumes you "trying to get something for nothing" and they are none to pleased with the situation. I have worked in restaurants of every caliber and whatever you do, do not send something back for a "Fresh" one or to be cooked a tad longer etc.Once that plate leaves your table, you don't want it back! Yikes! Always order something different, if anything at all.

This past Saturday I went with a group to an Asian Fusion "hotspot". When my spicy shrimp dish arrived it looked like popcorn shrimp with ranch dressing. I refused to $32 for something from Long John SIlvers and sent it back for the Ahi instead. If I'm at a restaurant where I don't expect much and my premonition proves accurate, I would still send it back but not order anything else. At that type of restaurant it's not worth the hassle and if they are still going to charge me thats fine, I'm just notgoing to waste my calories!

~*Eh Formaggio....Ehh not so much (Indy)*~

So, we have officially moved to Indy and our new home is just about to be completely gutted. One of the first things we needed to do was to line up a list of fabulous takeout joints. We get takeout pizza once a week regardless, so this was first and foremost.

We have heard rave reviews about Eh Formaggio on the west side and decided to place an order. Before jumping in to one of their specialties, we had to test the waters with our barometer. Extra thin crust with extra cheese and italian sausage. Prety standard fare, and the gent on the phone assured that it would be nice and thin and ready within 15 minutes.

We had heard that they made great thin style pizza and were Italian New Yorkers who knew what they were doing. When we arrived the first thing we noticed some gorgeous spanikopita. We made a comment like, "Oh, we didn't realize you also made mezes and spanikopita." The greek man who ran the joint told us, "We don't, thats a greek spinach pie." We couldn't help but smile, paid for the pizza, and left.

We were more than dissapointed to see that this was not a true thin crust pie. We're used to the amazing chicago style thin and have been spoiled with the gourmet pizzas of Arizona. It looked exactly like it came from Sbarros. It was much too doughy, there was no spice, and it tasted like they sprinkled green can parmesan around the thick edges. To be fair, it wasn't awful, but definitely not the way we enjoy our pie or worth the cals!

Is this the NY thin style or does this place simply not cut it anymore?

Zinc Bistro(Scottsdale) bad experience?

I've been three times, ordered all the "right things" and thought it was average at best. Honestly, nothing too redeeming about the place at all, except for the people watching!

The last time I was there, however, I had one of the most ridiculous waitress experiences. I had ordered a roast chicken salad and after about 10 minutes the waitress comes to check on us. She asked how everything was, and I had to tell her that my chicken was quite cold. She informed me that it was "supposed to be". I figured she knew the dishes better than I did, so I just smiled. Within a minute she returned with a menu and read the description of the salad to me, "Warm chicken salad.... You see, it's not going to be hot-hot." I was blown away and informed her that there was a grave difference between chilled--warm--and "hot-hot". She gave up and asked if I wanted another salad. I passed on the offer and will never return!
