Best Mussels on Smith and Court?
We went to Bar Tabac, and the mussels were....OK.
My wife MUCH prefers the mussels at Patois, we
have only been in the area 6 months, haven't had
a chance to hit all of the spots...
So far Patois is on top, with Robin De Bois in second,
and Bar Tabac a distant third... next up: Luluc and Quercy.
Best Mussels on Smith and Court?
that was my thinking as well, but I haven't found anyone who has actually tried them there...
Best Mussels on Smith and Court?
Yeah Bar Tabac kills it, I agree.
Pacifico? Find it hard to believe...
I'm sure Bouillabaisse 126 on Union has amazing Mussels,
but it's a little too far in the cold.
Best Mussels on Smith and Court?
OK, let's settle this: I'm talking classic French style.
The candidates:
Patois
Bar Tabac
Quercy
Luluc
Robin Des Bois
Thoughts? Anyone missing? We are going tonight...
thanks!
Has anyone been to Ivo and Lulu? Going for the first time...
well, Ivo and Lulu was... OK.
I don't think I will go back, and I would def caution people on going...
we had 3 apps, 2 entrees. I think all 5 were good ideas, but were executed
very poorly. Very heavy-handedm the Duck Confit survived, but the rest
we killed. Too bad, but we at least brought some exceptional vino!
thanks!
Has anyone been to Ivo and Lulu? Going for the first time...
Interesting... thanks for the insight, I'll let you know how it goes.
Has anyone been to Ivo and Lulu? Going for the first time...
curious what's good and what to avoid? On Broome St, BYOB.
thx.
Superfine Update?
Good spot, but the service is really bad, esp. with groups.
Food will take forever, at least 1 dish will come out 10 min
after everyone else, long waits for drinks, etc. Not worth the
$, in my opinion.
I would suggest 5 Front, just down the street? The vibe is not as much fun,
but the food is MUCH better, the service is solid, and pretty much the same $
I'm sure you and your friend will have fun no matter where you end up, so I'd
head to the best spot possible. enjoy.
Taking a chef to dinner near Cobble Hill tonite!
Chesnut is totally solid, and you will have a very good meal.
But for my taste, it's lacking in vibe and the menu has an odd balance,
it's very easy to have an awkward meal there (too heavy, or too light, etc)
Grocery is the way to go. Call, there are always cancellations.
If it's booked, I would suggest Bouillabaisse 126. It's excellent,
the vibe is super chill, and the Bouillabaisse, is well, the best I've
had in NYC. enjoy.
Vegetarian/Vegan Upscale
I would throw Hangawai into the mix?
excellent food, probably very different from
anything in Texas, and the Vegans will be very happy.
I really like the lunch there.

Chinatown delivery?
Most places in Chinatown don't deliver.... what are the best Chinese spots that do?
(also interested in Vietnamese/Malaysian/Indonesian, seems I need to expand my search.
I am on Broadway and Walker. Thanks!
the most intimate restaurant with great food
uptown, but Masa is the ultimate.
worth the trip (if you have the $)
Bouillabaisse 126?
I went to Bouillabaisse 126 on Friday night, and had a wonderful dinner.
they have a small, nice wine list that is solid, if somewhat typical.
All of the appetizers were very good, but the real star was the Bouillabase.
Excellent broth, perfectly cooked Lobster, Scallops, Oysters, and Cod....
really, very special. the $ was reasonable as well, I would def. recommend
this spot, worth the trip!
Help with Group of 12...Planning for late November
Tia Pol.
Best Tapas in NYC, they have a private room that will work for that many people.
66
Excellent modern high-end Chinese, on Church street in Tribeca.
The food is family-style, perfect for large groups.
30th Bday dinner for 10 people in Meat Packing District - Looking for a fun venue!
Spice Market, for sure. The food is excellent, and the vibe is festive, albiet a little yuppie.
I would make sure your table is upstairs, so you get the full impact. MUCH better than Buddha, Markt, or One Little.
For a more chill, intimate option, I would suggest 5 Ninth. Amazing food, wonderfull setting. Have drinks at the top floor bar (VIP often, but they will let you up if you have a res), and then dine on the floor below. You probably want to tear it up a little more than this, but a nice evening. Have Fun!
Best Sake selection in NYC?
Nothing touches Sakagura.
The absolute standard in NYC.
If you want "stylish", then I suggest the bar at En Brasserie.
A small, but well curated selection of sake, by someone
who knows what they are doing. But personally, I'd go
to Sakagura.
Blue Ribbon has a good selection to go with your food,
but not impessive enough to warrant a trip for sake.
Chibi's is very generic, lovely nieghborhood spot,
but not for sake lovers.
enjoy!
Bouillabaisse 126?
I am going to Bouillabaisse 126 for the first time this weekend.
Anyone been here recently? Any suggestions from the menu,
or is there anything I should avoid? Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks!
Best greek in nyc?
Greek is my absolute favorite as well!
This is my take Greek in NYC:
OVERALL BEST:
Avra.
Hands down. Everything on the menu is authentic and excellent,
with the fish being the highlight. The vibe is a bit Midtown,
but you get over that quickly once the food arrives. The $ is
acceptable for the quality and freshness.
EXCELLENT
Milos, Molyvos & Phylos.
Milos is as good as Avra, except that it is much more expensive.
I like to eat Greek food often, so I always choose Avra over Milos.
Phylos is very good as well, and I prefer its location. But Avra's
Mezedes and fish are significantly better. Molyvos is very close
to Avra in most regards, I just find that some of my favorites
(Octapodi, fava, tarama, lavraki) are better at Avra.
ALSO EXCELLENT
Agnanti.
Really good, the $ is the best on this list, the vibe is not ideal, but an excellent
restaurant. But it's in Astoria. I make it to Queens, like, 4 times a year.
And that's usually for Thai! :)
AVOID
Onera, Kellari, Greek to Me, Periyali
In my personal experiance, you can do better (see above)
Enjoy!
Henry's End - major disappointment
Henry's End is a good spot - by Brooklyn Hieghts standards. I will never understand how a nieghborhood full of $3M brownstones can be so devoid of good restaurants. It makes no sense. (I lived in Dumbo for 4 years, now on State St/Clinton) Henry's End should make any Chowhound's list of top 5 spots in BK Hieghts (not saying much). But no respectible 'Hound would put it in Brooklyn's top 5. Me, I've dined there probably 8 times over the past 4 years, and I would agree that the quality (of both the food and the service) varies, for sure.
For the $, I prefer to take a car service (round trip) to Park Slope or Fort Greene, than to gamble with my $ at Henry's End.
Craft vs Aureole vs other
Go to Craft! At, Aureole the food is very good, but the vibe and presentation is kinda pretentious. Perhaps a by-product of its location and clientele? Craft keeps its simple,
and wows on the plate. I've never had their tasting menu, but based on my previous meals there, I bet it's an excellent idea.
BTW, I checked out your list of places to check out. Looks like a great trip, although some of the choices are a bit "old school". I guess it depsnds on your motivation for going there (perhaps it's a place you always loved when visiting) and personal taste, but you have a lot of places that attract an older crowd: Chanterelle, Le Bernardin, Danube, etc. I'd suggest updating the list, throw in a Cafe Grey, or a Blau Gans, or some sushi? Just a thought.
The 3 spots on your list that I think you should DEF go to are 11 Madison Park,
Veritas & Peasant. Amazing each in their own way.
I would say skip Les Halles, there are many better Brasseries in NYC now.
enjoy your trip!
Dad's 60th birthday
Per Se, or Masa? Maybe L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon?
Depends on your father's taste, and # of people, etc.
Provide more info, and you will get more specific suggestions.
If you were picking one Brooklyn restaurant?
depends what you are looking for. The Brooklyn scene is much less flashy when compared to Manhattan. Some great spots:
al di la
the near-perfect casual Italian restaurant. no reservations, but they have a wine bar around the corner where you can wait. "Neighborhood spot" vibe. Excellent food, reasonably priced.

The Grocery
Small place, I think 10 tables? It can feel a little crowded, but amazing food, all about simple preparation and exceptional ingrediants. Often considered the best in BK.

Applewood
Another small spot, but with a lot of heart. One of my favorites.
http://www.applewoodny.com/
enjoy!
Any place to buy Iraqi or Egyptian Samoun (bread)?
I would ask at Damascus Bakery, or at Sahadi's. They will know.
highish-end vegetarian-friendly restaurant
I suggest Hangawi or Craft
Lovely atmosphere, and a wonderful menu.
I also suggest your friend studies the menu ahead of time,
it is the type of place where your meal can range from
exceptional to average, depending on what you order.
I haven't been there recently, so I hesitate to make menu
suggstions. enjoy!
http://www.hangawirestaurant.com/
Craft is veg-friendly. If you get a reservation, you can
call and discuss veg options available. yummy.
Best Prix Fixe Lunches in City
the best prix-fixe lunch in Manhattan is at Jean Georges.
I am a BK/downtown guy, but this is worth the trip uptown.
two-course lunch for $28, and it might be the best thing
you eat while you are here. Def. make a reservation.
enjoy!

Sirtaj Indian/Pakistani Restaurant
An important disctinction: "English" Curry can be VERY different from what you will find in the USA (or India). Ususal complaints are that the English versions are too "creamy" and the
American versions are too "greasy". I'm not looking to spark a debate (hey, good curry is good curry), but thought you should be aware of the disctinction.
Sirtaj is a solid Pakastani take-out spot. Dining there is dismal, but they have a handful of great dishes. I've always enjoyed their Navratan, but a bit on the heavy side. In that immediate area, I'd say they are your best bet
More to the east, Copper Chimney is a great suggestion, but it's not a Curry House.
But you will find many options in this hood, depending on what you're looking for.
BTW, the only spot I know for English Curry is in Brooklyn:
http://www.curry-source.com/
enjoy your trip!
Peasant vs. The Orchard?
I agree with brownie and dkstar1. If I had to choose between the 2, I'd probably side with Peasant beacuse: 1) The wine bar downstairs and 2) impressive consistency.
need indian suggestions
I have to agree with Dave on Devi, I've also been there twice, and disappointed both times.
Both times, I regretted not going to Tamarind. For Indian fine dining in NYC, I believe Tamarind is the overall best. Tabla is very good, but not really Indian. Devi is trying to be Tamarind.
I also agree with Peter (above), Vatan is the best place for Gujarati thali.
And Saravanaas is great food, although I find their dining room quite uncomfortable.
Enjoy your trip.
K
Private Room for 18- Indian, Chinese, Mexican or Tapas, serving great food.
Tia Pol (best Tapas in NYC) has a private room in the back.
I think they say it's for 15 people, but call and find out.
