HEB Fresh Bulk Salsas
I was blown away by these HEB salsas, better than any other fresh salsa on offer in town IMHO. I bought them at the E 7th St. HEB and assumed they had some special elves making them fresh in house. I make a special trip now every week for salsa and Cafe Bustelo. Dirt cheap and food stamp eligible.
Where is the best Spicy Fried Chicken in Austin on par with Prince's in Nashville
If we're talking spicy chicken, I've got to give a shout-out to the Korean Fried Chicken at Somunanjib Korean Food and Drinks on North Lamar. Amazing flavor and hot as hell (or sweet if you're not into the spicy). No relation at all to Nashville style, but it might fit the bill nonetheless. If they let you order any less than 20 pieces at time, I'd be there all the time.
CHOW Tour Austin, Your Thoughts On Where to Go?
I'd add Mr. Natural to the vegi restaurant list, too. Funky, diverse, super-austin-y, vegetarian Tex-Mex. It's on Cesar Chavez not far from downtown. And maybe Swad, too, in North Central Austin for dosas and idli. It's the only restaurant in Austin that approximates my experience of southern india food.
Today's Austin Food-Related Groupon
Does anyone know why it listed as a "$65 value" when their weekly delivery is $37. Is it an extra big box of organic produce, or are they just exaggerating the value?
Need Fresh Oyster Advice Please - Post Oil Spill
Quality Seafood has definitely upped their oyster game post-BP oil spill. I went with my oyster-loving family this week and they had 6 different oysters to choose from: the Gulf (san antonio bay), Virginia, Connecticut (Blue Points), Washington State, and PEI (Malapeques). They ranged from 11.99/dz to 14.99/dz -- and they threw in a few extras to boot. Love that place.
Free Range Heritage Turkey
for what it's worth, the White Egret Farm bourbon red heritage turkey was amazing. It tasted like a totally different animal from any turkey I've eaten before and the skin was crisp, lacquered and glistening. we cooked it low and slow as per their directions (300-325 for 4.5 hours for a 16 lb bird) and my mother-in-law, who's done thanksgiving for the last 30 years, said we knocked it out of the park. so I guess I'll probably brave the 2 hour wait again next year.
Free Range Heritage Turkey
Picked up a pastured Bourbon Red heritage bird from White Egret Farm way down FM969. They're selling them for $4/lb at the farm, with the full flock and bird-catching staff in full view (though not the slaughtering and de-feathering). The only catch was that we had to wait in line for them to prepare just the right bird for us, which in our case took 2 hours! Other people waiting on line swore it's the best turkey they've ever eaten; I'll have to report back after T-day.

Need help lighting vintage gas stove
I need some help. I bought a vintage O'keefe and Merritt stove a little while ago for my house, which is nearing the end of a renovation. It was reinstalled and the gas is working fine - the burners can be lit - but I'm not able to get the pilots lit.
I have vague directions from the last seller - press a red button, light pilot (where?) - but I'm failing miserably and we need it to work for our final inspection this week!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What are your favorite ethnic markets?
Phoenicia Bakery on Burnet Rd is the tops.
6 types of feta (including salty bulgarian and french sheep's feta), an olive bar half the price and twice the freshness of Central Market, freezers full of middle eastern and central european delicacies, and Austin's best homemade pita. Plus the people who work there are great.

The Rebirth of the White Swan
Great scoop. Has anyone else heard this news? If it's true, does anyone have any idea whether he's planning on opening soon or just holding the property until the area turns around? (I live two blocks away, and a new Rio Rita in the hood would make so very happy.)
Soups in Austin
Khao Soi (northern thai spicy noodle soup) at Madam Mam's.
Shrimp wonton soup with duck at First Chinese Barbeque (Chinatown Center).
Buying paneer
I was suprised to see that the freezer at Phoenicia grocery on Burnet Rd. has paneer. It also has some of the better/cheeper cheeses to be found in town. The French sheep's milk feta (not to mention six other kinds of feta), goat cheese and good oil cured olives are other reasons to check this place out.
