JoJu Modern Vietnamese Sandwiches, Elmhurst

I think their sanwiches are getting better. The BBQ pork chop, spicy hits the spot!

SO I can say that the bulgogi sandwich is actually much better that the traditional banh mi (with the head cheese, ham, pate etc.) It's silly, it bucks traditon, but it tastes good so who cares?

One thing about this place is they don't really have the bread "down" the way Ba Xuyen does (my gold standard for NYC Banh Mi.) I think they use a regular cheap italian styel baguette as opposed so something rice-flour based.

That said, it's a tasty and cheap lunch. I also think they may work out the kinks (e.g. the aforementioned lack of spiciness) in time.

This place, the awesome Uncle Zhou and sweet yummy house are the holy trinity of food in this particular subsection of elmhurst!

LITTLE PEPPER College Point is OPEN!!

You like intense flavors, heat and spice? Do you fear pools of chile oil? If the answers are "yes" and "no" respectively, then just put yourself in the owner's gracious hands.

Cubana Social in Williamsburg

I went there late-ish one night for some drinks and ended having a cubano. it was pretty good, and the other food smelled good. Honestly, though, what I liked most about it was that it was a place that served booze and didn't have music so loud that I couldn't have a grown-up conversation.

fatty cue vs fette sau

ha! OK, you're right, but the sirloin we ordered was also pretty gnarly...

fatty cue vs fette sau

on the other hand! I went to FS last night, turns out thursdays are "Fat Pig Thursday" when they serve the smoked meats from a whole hog...sounds good, right? But! Three people, $70, and a whole lot of fat and bone from the cuts we selected (belly and sirloin).
Now don't get me wrong--I loves me some pork fat--but this was absurd.
Also annoying, the crowds, jockeying for a table (although everyone who eats there is pretty nice about this)

Anyone else there last night with a different experience? Maybe we just got unlucky...

Sripraphai overrated

I've found that the best times to go to Srip are during somewhat "off" hours, like around 3 o'clock on the weekend, or before the dinner rush on a weekday. I went last night and had the crispy watercress salad and Roasted duck in hot & spicy sauce (C-18 on the menu) and both were kind of lacking a certain something, that extra bit of tartness and spice, that I've come to expect in eating thai food....this was esp true of the duck dish, which I ordered spicy and not only was it not spicy, but it was missing that something, as if ingredients had been left out.

Last week I had a meal at Ayada thai that I would classify as awesome.

Best of Elmhurts

As a proud resident of "da hurst" I will give you these recommendations, some seconds of other recommendations:
Lao Bei Feng Dumping House on Whitney is an awesome and cheap place for pork and chive dumplings, $1.25 for 4. This is my go-to spot for a quikc, cheap snack.
For Indonesian, I like Mei Jakarta, but I also think java Village over on Justice Ave warrants a visit. And then, Sistema at the Village Voice had nice things to say about Bromo Satay House on Broadway--I haven't been myself but it seems well trafficked by the local indonesians.
Sweet Yummy House, also on Broadway, has some great sichuan food.
I second Ayada as being often of Srip-caliber--better than Chao Thai, to my own taste, which is also very good but sometimes inconsistent. But truth be told, most of the elmhurst Thai tends to be pretty darn good: Chao, Ayada, Ploy Thai, Nusara Thai Kitchen are the big four I think most people on this board would agree with.
There is also a Ramen-ish place that just opened on Broadway near Bromo Satay house that intrigues me, although I don't think it's a "authentic" japanese style ramen place. Anyone been to this one?
Limoncello, on Ithaca street on the corner of Baxter, is a decent red sauce italian joint. Good for the winter.
Ping's over on Queens Boulevard, has good dim sum, although of course the choices in flushing are better.
Lin's Taiwanese--this place is one of those restaurants that it might pay to go to with a native speaker--because I always feel as though the specials are not offered to English speaking customers and I always get plate envy from other diners, with their elaborate platters of claypot seafood dishes that don't appear to be on the menu; what IS on the menu is lots of stuff potentially challenging to the western palate, such "zesty intestines" and duck tongues, etc. But I do like the food there.

Bachelor dinner in w'burg

Funny, that was the groom's first choice, but I and others demanded a more formal, sit-down kinda establishment place. I do think Fette Sau is probably my favorite billburg place to eat--two of them sausages to go and I'm golden for 6 bucks.

downtown brooklyn lunchtime burger round-up

Been working on livingston street betwixt cobble-hill and downtown brooklyn/brooklyn heights for a while now and have been doing some lunchtime hamburger recon that I thought may benefit others working in the area (or on jury duty).

There are basically three paths one can take: montague street, smith street, and atlantic avenue. Montague street offers 5 guys burger and fries, which is admittedly a delicious super greasy bomb of a burger but a bit pricey for fast food IMO. There is also grand canyon and the happy days diner on Montague, both of which are decent but nothing to shout about.

Atlantic avenue offers the waterfront ale house, which is my #2 choice, as well as numerous non-burger options (banh mi at Nicky's, middle-eastern offerings at Sahadi's and waterfalls cafe.)

Smith street offers the "New" St. Clair diner which is a better diner burger than that of the Happy days diner on Montague and the New Apollo diner on livingston st, but lo and behold I discovered the best lunchtime burger is at Bar Tabac. Delicious, done to perfection on a light toasted bun with fantastic fries and salad.

I was surprised by this because Bar Tabac always struck me as the kind of faux-french clip joint that would be annoying and have overpriced/bad food, but for this purpose, anyway, it came out #1 in my semi-exhaustive study.

Anyone think of anyplace notable I missed within these boundries?

Hello, my good friend is getting married and we want to take him out to a nice dinner in w'burg. We screwed up and did not make reservations at Peter Luger, so I guess that's out, but can anyone recommend any choices beyond what's on this list (and express a preference from within this list if you have one?) many thanks!

anyone been to Bromo Satay House in Elmhurst?

Just opened last week, i think.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/bromo-satay-h...

Of places in the area, I think I like Java Village best, followed by Mie Jakarta. Minangasli I haven't visited since the new ownership.
Still haven't made it to Upi Jaya (and yes, i know I should go!). But actually all these places seem a bit different, which makes sense (perhaps they represent cooking from different parts of Indonesia?

)

Anyway, curious about Bromo ...

Best Authentic Latin Food in Woodside/Sunnyside/Elmhurst/Jackson Heights

In Elmhurst/Jackson Heights:
Mexican:
Tacqueria Tulcingo on baxter ave, esp for their Huevos Rancheros
Taqueria Coatzingo on Roosevelt
(although I prefer Tortilleria Nixtamal to both of these)
Columbian:
La Pequena Columbia on Roosevelt (might not be good to go with vegetarians, although I think they have some seafood on their menu)
Ecuadorian:
I have no idea--there's quite a few places, and I bet some of them are gems. Anyone want to chime in here? This seems to be one dominant immigrant group in the part of elmhurst I live.

Dining Near Ikea

It's not in red hook, but whenever I drive to Ikea I stop by Ba Xuyen for the best Banh Mi in the 5 boroughs. On a nice day, you can eat it outside somewhere in red hook (fairway cafe ?), or greedily gobble up those suckers in your car.
Delicious, and cheap.

Saltie sandwiches in Williamsburg

chompchomp,
As someone on yelp said reviewing this place: "Stuff White People Like #63: Expensive Sandwiches!"
I had the spanish tortilla sandwich with the red pepper aoili--I thought it was a great heavy starchy bomb of a sandwich to eat on a cold day. But not sure i would go back there...

I quite like it. It's certainly my go-to place when I'm in that nabe.
it's likely to be pretty mellow on a weekday, not so much on a weekend.

Chao Thai

Ordered some takeout from Chao recently and while the duck salad was as bigjeff described--delicious, I was profoundly disappointed by the Pad Prikh King curry with pork...the Srip version is insanely good, and I recall a previous order many months ago from Chao being very intense--but what was served up at this point was pretty much bad chinese takeout--no heat, very fatty and actually underdone (!) pieces of meat. Add to this that Chao seems to be more expensive than the others....(why is that, anyway?)
