Dinner @ Market Table - what to order?

We loved everything they put in front of us there, a couple weeks ago. We both ordered fish, the char was great, a heavier, grilled dish and the Halibut with pea shoots lovely light and the exact opposite of the char, both great. We had the oyster app and the crab cakes are the best we have had, not to be missed. They split stuff for us without us asking and the wine was good. We didn't get it but the lamb shank looked amazing. Have fun. We really enjoyed the whole experience.

Where to gather for low key b-day?

It is my friends 30th and she wants to have a casual get together with food and drinks for about 10-15 people. Maybe a place with small plates/tapas as she wants to keep it inexpensive for her friends.

West Village, SOHO, Chelsea area. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Chelsea vs. Tribeca

So, my husband and I are attempting to choose between two different apartments in two different neighborhoods. As eating out is important to us, the neighborhoods restaurants will be one of the deciding factors.

We just moved to town and have been subletting in Chelsea. What we are looking for are casual but great places for dinner. The kind of place you can spill out of your apartment and get a lovely, not terribly expensive, but interesting meal. One of our favorites at the moment is Le Zie on Seventh.

The neighborhoods are Chelsea and Tribeca. What do you think?

Where to get lunch @ 54th and 10th Ave?

Just relocated to NYC from LA. My new office is on 54th between 10th and 11th. Don't have much time to run out and get lunch, so I can't walk too far, but I would love to find some great, food close by. I am very open to what type of food. Carts, ethnic, sandwiches, inexpensive and quick is good. Thanks so much for the help!

BEST MEAT IN LA

Just tryed Marconda's at the Farmers Market on Third Street. Wonderful, more helpful then the other butcher there, Huntington's. They really take great care and pride in their cuts.

BEST MEAT IN LA

Bristol Farms is much better quality meat then Whole Foods believe it or not. And the three butchers in the Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax are good. They each have many unusual cuts and kinds of meat such as elk, venison, squab, etc.. if you are in to experimenting or trying any of Mario Batali's recipe in which he often used things such as beef jowl and you think to your self "where in the world am I going to get that!"

recommendations for beverly hills, west hollywood, santa monica

Do you have any specfics? Dinner, Lunch, Breakfast? Likes, dislikes?

A few of the best places in town for dinner are:

Providence-pricy, but worth it, try tasting menu
Opus-much less expensive and better the Providence, great tasting menus
Jar-wonderful meat dishes, try the pot roast or any shank

Skip Hatfields and Mozza both are overrated and Taste is only OK.

Really, LisaStick, we need to talk, Toast and the Griddle?? Do you LIKE food? These places are like waiting in line at a night club for a plate of eggs. Over priced, insuferable crowds, for mediocre food!

The little door next door is an very sweet, european wine, cheees, pastery place, great for breakfast, lunch or late afternoon snack.

BLD is excellent, for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner.

Milk is fantastic for dessert. Best ice cream in the world.

Let us know what your taste is and how long you will be here and if you are driving and we can be more specific.

Milk on Beverly. Can't believe no one has mentioned this place. My husband and I concure that this is probably the best ice cream we have ever had...in our lives.

Chef pan/Saucepan cook differently?

Is there a significant difference between the way a saucepan cooks and the way a chef pan cooks? Can they be used interchangably? The shape is different clearly but I am curious about the cooking differences.

Thanks!

The one restaurant you resolve to try in 2007?

Oh writer girl, what a difficult question. Just one? Hatfields. One cause it sounds devine and two because I haven't been able to get a reservation the last three times I called!! On principle and growling stomach I will persevere.

Everyone should do the tasting menu at Provedence.

Never tried Saddle Ranch, is it fun and good?

Need BEVERLY CENTER dinner rec's.....nothing fancy

Just reread your post. You said dinner. Joan's is open till 8. Who's On Third and Alfredo's Breakfast/lunch only. Everything else should be fine. And Joan's can be pricy for what it is. There is a Chipotle in the Bev Center near Grand Lux that is great.

Need BEVERLY CENTER dinner rec's.....nothing fancy

There are a ton of places if you walk east on 3rd from the Bev Center. With all the great spots I wouldn't eat at the Center. You have Mishima (Japanese) good, causal, in small strip mall on 3rd just east from La Cienaga. Zen Grill (not my favorite, but the people seem to like it). Joan's on Third maybe perfect, it is around Kings Road and 3rd, European Deli with great gourmet salads and sandwichs, wonderful sweet treats. Farther down, Who's on Third (Salads, sandwiches), Doughboys (salads, sandwiches, great sweets, red velvet: great) Alfredos.

There is so much in this area, you should be able to satisfy any craving you all have. FYI Bread Bar is great, it is in the other direction then the listed above (west on Third) The omlettes are amazing. But know that is is only open for breakfast and lunch, I believe and the menu is mostly Bread.

Water Grill is it good?

I have been underwhelmed by The Water Grill. Over hyped I believe for the price. Having not been there yet (have reservations this Sat.) Providence is by all accounts wonderful.

Good place for raw oysters?

Been to the Hungry Cat for Oysters and more, pretty good, although over hyped. Wondering where the best places in town for raw oysters would be.

Thanks!

Where to buy the best proscuitto in LA.

The cafe at Surfas in Culver City has a nice little selection of very good Proscuiutto and cheeses. The head chief there is very knowledgable and hosts cheese tasting on Sat. afternoons I think. One afternoon though, when I was there. he did a meat tasteing it was wonderful, he has great taste.

The cafe its self is terrfic as well. Great Pannini's and Salads and cheese plates. Cookies good too.

Best Thai food in LA?

Probably been covered a million times. But I have not been in to Thai until my recent trip to Vancouver (where the Thai is amazing). I am coming back to LA with intense cravings but no idea where to go. I live in Hollywood, but am willing to drive. What are your top picks?

Authentic Italian food in Los Angeles?

La Buca, was only mentioned in the first post. If you are looking for authentic handmade pasta and perfect thin crust pizza go here. The guys who run this place are wonderful, they brought their Mama over from Rome to cook, she is always in the kitchen with a cap on that says Mama. Every one of their pasta's are great. For the pizza they have choices of regular cheese with red sauce or white pizzas (no red sauce) and red pizzas (no cheese), so many delicious choices. They are tiny, but are expanding, if they aready haven't. Very authentic, no pretention.

Great food in Vancouver-review

Everyone has been so incredibily helpful in their suggestions of where to go and what to try. I wanted to tell of some of the great food this city has to offer. It is pretty incredible, I have yet to have one bad meal, or even one bad dish, really.

Go Fish - Hard to find, but so worth the trip! Small fish and chips shack just at the end of w. 1st ave. right on the water off the bike path at fishermans wharf. There is no sign, but there is a sign to buy fresh fish from a small wharf and Go Fish is right there just above it. We did not actually order the fish and chips, although many (and I mean many, people love this place, small as it is) were enjoying them. But we did have the oyster po'boy and the fish tacos (tacones they call them). The best fish taco I have ever had! Made with salmon, perfectly grilled, great flavor. The po'boy, is very different from any you've had before. But it melts in your mouth with big, plump, juicy oysters and a sauce that
is heaven. Very rich and buttery. It was a Sat. and very crowded, but worth the wait. Owned by Gordon Martin, who is the chief at Bin 941 and 942 (both great tapas, wine bars with wonderful atmophere and energy).
Go Fish

Stepho's - Greek restaurant - This place gets a line out front every night, all evening long. But the line moves fast and the portions are huge for the price, as well as being delicious. We weren't sure at first, being so chaotic and busy. First we got an marinated octopus starter, which was meaty and rich. Big hunks of octopus. Not your typical octopus salad, very good. Try their specialty drink the Ceaser. Salty, spicey goodness and goes well with the octopus. They bring out great pita bread with the orders, fluffy and warm. The roast lamb is amazing. Huge shank of lamb that appears over done but is in actuality perfectly chard on the outside seeling in tender, perfectly cooked, gently flavored, delicate meat falling of the bone. This is on top of a huge amount of rice, great vegetable gulash, that is tomato based, good lemon roasted potatos and greek salad. Even better the next day when I had the left overs for Lunch. We also tryed the Pork Souvlaki which had a lot of flavor and is also served with huge amounts of rice, etc...
The house red was fine, good with the meats.
Address: 1124 davie street
Phone: 604-683-2555
Directions: Davie street, lots of personality on this street

Well I have more but I must write more later as the day is ticking away.

Vancouver picks [moved from Canada board]

This is terrific! Thank you so much for all the ideas. This is exactly what I need as I have never been here and don't know anyone here. I did venture over to Granville Island and bought some fruit (amazing rasberries) but now I have some places to look out for. I definitly will be going to Longsdale market and Grouse Mtn. How did you know that cheese is my favorate food! I will definatly be stoping in there. Quilting is something I know nothing about so what a perfect opportunity to start learning. I will let you know how it all is. Thank you.

Vancouver picks [moved from Canada board]

I will be in Vancouver for the next five weeks and need some suggestions of where to eat. My husband will be visiting this weekend. We are flexible on price, so high end to budget is fine. We like Italian, seafood, steak, tapas, mediterranian, indian, not so wild about asian food, but like trying new things, so we are pretty open. I wouldn't mind a few vegan places either for myself. I went to Bin 942 last night and had a terrific time. The wine and the atmosphere are tremendous, the guy sitting next to me let me try his order of the duck with cranberry reduction and a potato, asperagus, goat cheese tower of bliss. It was terrific I can't wait to go and eat there myself.

Cheebo - I wanted to like it...

I have always loved this place. The apple pie is amazing!. Never had the pizza, but the tuna tartar with avacado is wonderful and the salads are good. The salmon as well. Can be very crowded and busy, but always had great service.

aoc - disappointing

It seems to be hit and miss with this place. Have gone mutiple times and always love the idea of it, the reality never quite lives up. Overseasoning is a possibilty. Although I do have to say just from reading your order it sounds devine! Definatly would agree with above about the "Luques" experience especially Sun. night farmers market menu. They have never been wrong about the wine pairing at AOC when I've asked for advice. But even the cheese plate falls flat. Get a better one down the street at Joan's on Third. I still love the bar and the NYC feel of AOC though and it pays to try it a couple times, usually there is one thing that is tremendous.
