Three Muses open
Went to Three Muses on Frenchmen on Friday night. Shared lobster egg rolls, rabbit empanadas, a cheese board, and a korean platter. The empanadas and korean items were standouts, though the rest were very good, too.
The place was full but not overly crowded. We listened to Raphael Bas and an accordionist play. Very pleasant.
Next time we go, I think we won't order things all at once, as they came out pretty much at the same time. Affordable wine list, friendly staff. Well priced. We'll be back!
For fun - New Orleans Insider's Guide - Tell us what we missed
Of which Liuzza's do you speak? I am curious.
My favorite G is Green Goddess, and I am waiting with anticipation for Three Muses.

For fun - New Orleans Insider's Guide - Tell us what we missed
Hi everyone –
I thought I’d share something my firm is working on that seemed just up the Chowhounders' alley.
My firm (Zehno Cross Media Communications) created an insider's guide (http://www.zehno.com/insider) that highlights the best New Orleans has to offer, featuring our ultimate pick for each letter of the alphabet. For five special locations, video clips (http://zehno.com/insider/sort_video.html) take you right into the action.
Eats we included:
Hansen's Sno-Bliz (if you can believe it, I've lived here 10 years and only made it there for the first time last week -- more of a Pandora's girl myself)
Jacque Imo's
Kim Son
Leah's Pralines
Rocky and Carlo's
Now, we’re inviting you to submit your own nominations for New Orleans sites, sounds and eats to feature. Come on, tell us what we missed -- I know that this board has an opinion.
In the spirit of the board, we can debate the picks here, but please also submit your ideas to http://www.zehno.com/insider/yourpicks.html. YouTube and/or Vimeo video responses should use the @ZehnoNOLA keyword in video titles (and it doesn’t hurt to send a notification from the submission page when you post).
And no, “B is for Bourbon Street” will not cut it.

Visiting next week from MN
Mandina's might have the whole shootin' match at the right price. Great turtle soup. Great New Orleans neighborhood experience.

Searching for duck legs and fat
I think you can order duck leg/thing quarters individually. But I had to buy a gallon of the duck fat. And you can call and then pick up.

Oooo! This is a new find. I will call them tomorrow. I don't mind freezing things for later.
help with four meals in 1.5 days
If I had 1.5 days in NOLA, I would not spend a precious meal at Brennan's. IMO it's horridly overpriced. Dante's Kitchen (across from Brigsten's) does a great weekend brunch. You could take a cab with your luggage, and then keep going from there.
For breakfast Saturday, check out Croissant d'Or on Ursulines. But beware, next Saturday is the Crescent City Classic. The Quarter is going to be packed with runners in the a.m.

Searching for duck legs and fat
Oh! And I need to make a bunny cake (white cake with sticky frosting and coconut). Whatever happened to packages of boiled icing mix? I looked/called everywhere last Easter -- no one sells it. Help!?
Searching for duck legs and fat
Greetings -
I am planning making some homemade duck confit for Easter. My only problem, where to buy the duck and duck fat? I've found an expensive online source (levillage.com), but does anyone know of a place that sells it locally?
I've tried to call Hong Kong Market, but they don't answer their phone.
Thanks for any tips.

Search for Gold (Luster)
I'm hosting my annual cookie party in a few weeks and will be making sesame cookies. Does anyone know of a New Orleans purveyor of gold luster (edible)?
My last similar pilgrimmage was for dragees -- I ended up buying them online from a place in Montana. Was obsessed by then and spent $20 to buy and ship to myself. Cookies looked nothing like the picture in Martha Stewart Living. :-)
Any help appreciated!

Post-Christmas trip to Istanbul, Cappadocia -- reccs for New Year's Eve?
Greetings -
We'll be making a trip to Istanbul shortly after Christmas. We'll spend 5 nights in Istanbul and 3 nights in Goreme/Cappadocia.
I've read recent posts to the board about both locations.
I'll post a report after we return, including a culinary tour I signed up for through the Istanbul Culinary Institute (www.istanbulculinary.com)
One thing I'm curious about -- we'll be in Istanbul for New Year's Eve. Any reccs on some place to ring in a fabulous New Year's?
Preserved porcini mushrooms
I'm looking to buy a jar of preserved porcini mushrooms in oil for a dinner party I'm giving on Saturday. Anyone know off hand where I might find? Planning on calling Whole Foods in the a.m. Perhaps Central Grocery?
Pork belly
I bought an 8-lb belly from Cochon about 6 months ago and cured it into bacon. Delicious -- but pricey at around $8/lb. They did offer to cut it for me if I brought it back. Good to know that HKM has bellies as well.
Lazaro's Report
Went to Lazaro's on Banks last night. They've been open since May. Said they had a slow summer. This is the space that has housed a Chicago-style hot dog shop, a Thai place, and others.
My friend and I ordered a T-Bird Special. Pepperoni, sausage, chicken, asparagus and red peppers. Delicious thin crust, great ingredients, and a huge pizza! I had thought I was going to stick to my diet and have just two pieces, but I had 4. We killed it between the two of us. Only $17.
Atmosphere is not fine dining, more like a family-run neighborhood joint. Waitstaff was friendly.
BYO, or pick up drinks at the Banks Street Bar next store.
Check it out! This may be just the replacement for those of you who miss the old Mid City location of New York Pizza, or dare I say Sugar Park in Bywater.
Taking the bus to Parkway for a Po'Boy?
I would qualify that to say that public transportation is not used by the majority of people with means. Public transportation is something that many of our residents depend on. Sorry to get political, but it's kind of ridiculous how bad our public transport is when so many people depend on it.
Gregory & Pete's (?)
Gregory and Pete's is pure New Orleans -- familiar plate lunches and diner food. Friendly service. Food is nothing to write home about, but I'd happily go there any day. Also check out another diner/plate lunch spot -- Leni's -- just up the street on Baronne.
Vegetarian- friendly recs?
Praline Connection does not put pork in its beans or greens (at least the last time I checked).
Panda King Fine Dining
Hong Kong market is on the West Bank on Behrmann. http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=hong+kong+market+new+orleans&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&view=text&latlng=9300911786482664776
Best Vietnamese Dishes in NOLA
Just returned from a lunch at Sao Mai Banh Mi. Tasty and delicious. Exceedingly inexpensive. All meat handmade. I had the combo special with all 3 kinds of meats. BF had shredded pork. Also tried the Thai sweet corn. Not so sure about that. Watched Chinese TV with Vietnamese overdubs. Owner enjoys conversation. It's the full package.
Cochon de lait po'boy - worth going to Walker's?
Alas - your trip has probably come and gone.
For those who may be researching...
Walker's is great. It's a hike -- meaning you can't walk and it would be a pricey cab ride. Phone first to make sure they are open. Neighborhood is nice.
Top 5 PoBoys
Holy cow! How could I have forgotten...
the cochon de lait PoBoy at Walker's? It's doubly delicious because it's elusive -- served at Jazz Fest or when Walker's happens to be open.
Banh Mi - known as the "Vietnamese PoBoy" served at Hong Kong Market on the West Bank. Also available at Pho Tau Bay and most likely other various Vietnamese locales.
Top 5 PoBoys
5. Caprese PoBoy at Parkway
4. Grilled shrimp PoBoy at some place on Magazine -- name is escaping me. Also at Mandina's.
3. Calamari PoBoy at Crabby Jack's
2. BBQ shrimp at Liuzza's BTT
1. Thanksgiving PoBoy at Parkway
Tony Angelo's
This chowhound just returned from her first trip. The atmosphere is sublime, the food pretty good, and no wait whatsoever. We'll be back and recommend to others. It's a quintessential New Orleans restaurant but on a different wavelength.
Would you buy a fish at Pike Place Market
I'm in town until tomorrow morning and am toying with the idea of buying some salmon at the Market to take home with me.
Is it worth it? Suggestions on the best purveyor?
Large Group Dinner
I find Muriel's Jackson Square to be a wonderful location, ambiance and price point for large groups. You can rent out the upstairs. http://www.muriels.com/html/privateparties.html
Boucherie
We went for dinner last night. Couldn't believe how inexpensive the offerings were! Was hoping to see the po-boys on the dinner menu, but alas, no. We shared the boudin balls, shrimp and grits and fries for the small plate, and the pulled pork entree. Despite being packed, service was reasonably fast. And there's no corkage fee. This will now be on the shortlist for a reliable night out or a place to take friends for good southern food.
