One Night In Bardstown, KY
We have one night in Bardstown in early June. Circa looks pretty perfect for us, but is there another choice I should be considering? Thanks in advance.
Driving From Lynchburg, TN to Asheville, NC -- anything good to eat?
For sho' -- one of the first reservations we made was lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's -- looking forward to it!
Corbin, KY?
Thanks so much for the ideas! Will re-think the KFC thing -- it was only for historical reasons were were considering it in the first place. We will have plenty of time to try Bubby's, Depot, Basil, and Weaver's.
Grand Ole Opry Post Show Dinner
Good suggestion -- Kayne Prime at 10 p.m. it is! Thanks!
Grand Ole Opry Post Show Dinner
We are attending the 7 p.m. Grand Ole Opry performance (which we are told lasts about 2 hours) at the Opry House on a Saturday. Is it possible to get to a 9:30 p.m. dinner reservation at Watermark after the show?
Corbin, KY?
We are staying two nights at the Cumberland Falls Resort in Corbin and need to know where to eat. Apparently NOT at the resort? I have chili buns at Crabtree's Root Beer Stand on our list, as well as the Harland Sanders Museum and Cafe. Any other must eats in the area? Price, atmosphere and food style are all open -- we just want straight-up good food.
Thanks in advance,
AmySue
Driving From Lynchburg, TN to Asheville, NC -- anything good to eat?
Hey Littleman -- after reading up on the places you suggested in Crossville, we changed our reservations from the Holiday Inn Express in Harriman to the one in Crossville. We want to try one of the BBQ places for lunch (Big Boy's probably) and eat at the Brass Lantern for dinner. The menus at both places are CLASSIC! Thanks for the tips!
Driving From Lynchburg, TN to Asheville, NC -- anything good to eat?
I had feared that Harriman was a chain-only situation. And it's hard to imagine myself in a town founded on temperance! We'll just have to suffer through Cracker Barrel or Shoney's or some such nonsense for one night. And thanks also for the road closure/alternate route tips. Hopefully by the end of May things will be cleared up.
Driving From Lynchburg, TN to Asheville, NC -- anything good to eat?
Cosby looks like lunch a good spot for lunch on the last leg of the trip. Thanks for the suggestions!

Crossville looks like the place to stop for lunch on the first leg of the trip. Thank you for the suggestions!
Driving From Lynchburg, TN to Asheville, NC -- anything good to eat?
We will be taking the 55 from Lynchburg to the 40 all the way to Asheville, NC with a stop overnight in Harriman, TN.
We are hoping to avoid corporate chain food if at all possible and are open to anything chowhounds might suggest. Our goal is always to find where local people would go for straight-up good food. It might be a roadside chicken shack, a back-country barbecue joint, or the place you go for a birthday or anniversary.
Thanks in advance.

Campanula on New Year's Eve?
We got bumped from our long-standing reservation for New Year's Eve dinner and found a spot at Campanula. Our original plan was dressy and very French, but it looks like the food at Campanula could make us very happy. Anybody eaten there recently?
New Year's Day Dining
We are looking for a place open for dinner on New Year's Day. Tried Zuni Cafe, Perbacco, Frascati, and Boulevard with no luck. This list gives you an idea of the kind of place and price point we are looking for. Need to stay in the city -- our hotel is just off Union Square. Any suggestions much appreciated.
Sunday in Florence?
Sostanza is there because I saw recent, positive reviews here and on other sites. If it's a no-go, please tell me and why. I'll definitely check out the other suggestions.
Thanks,
Amy

Rome in Two Weeks: The finalized plan?
Vinoroma,
Thank you for all your good advice. My plan is to have the hotel concierge make my reservations for me. Also, thanks for the tip on upstairs at Roscioli. Is there a room or floor I should request at Antico Arco?
Best,
Amy

Sunday in Florence?
Hello everyone,
Now that my Rome plan is pretty well set, I'm on to Florence.. The list is:
Sostanza
Vini e Vecchi Sapori
Casalinga
Cibereo Trattoria (not ristorante)
One problem is that we are there on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Anybody know a good Sunday dinner spot? Are there any reasons to get rid of any of my choices above? Any places I should look at further? We are looking to spend 40 euro or less per person and are interested in solid, seasonal, fresh, typically local food with good value wine.
Thank you for any suggestions,
Amy

Rome in Two Weeks: The finalized plan?
Hello everyone,
Thanks to all your help and lots of reading, the plan is as follows:
Thursday dinner: Roscioli
Friday Lunch: Palatium (over La Campana for wine selection)
Friday Dinner: Antico Arco (with the knowledge that the good food will be worth the price and the possibility of tourist Siberia seating)
Saturday Lunch: Pizzarium (will be in that area)
Saturday Dinner: Colline Emiliane
I still am wondering if Ditirambo might be a good option for one of the dinners. The suckling pig on the menu has got my attention....
Should I reserve for lunches? I'm thinking 9 p.m. for dinner. Am I there yet?
Thanks,
Amy

Rome: Studied hard, need some tutoring
@tavoleroman: Thank you for the explanation. For dinner we do prefer something warm and relaxing and quiet. So, for dinner you would recommend Antico Arco, or La Gensola? I think Settembrini is too fishy for me? I really appreciate your insight. Thank you.

@tavoleromane: why would Palatium and La Campana be better for lunch? Others advise for dinner, but I am really curious about the difference between lunch and dinner. Just when I thought I was getting it all figured out...

Thank you to everyone! I am going to recalculate according to your advice and suggestions. Between my plan and the Eat Rome app, I think we will be in good shape. On to Florence...new post.
Best regards,
Amy
Rome: Studied hard, need some tutoring
My bad -- I was thinking of anything that gets pulled out of water as one category. I think we are more talking about seafood. On a trip to Venice several years ago he was enraptured by such dishes as seppia and squid in its own ink . Are we still in the financial stratosphere on those sorts of items? Is there a place where I could get pasta carbonara, he could eat creatures, and we would be on budget?
Rome: Studied hard, need some tutoring
Got scared of fish in Rome due to the truly unmanageable prices mentioned in other posts. Figured since we are headed to Riomaggiore several days later, he could get his fish on then. But if there are places within our budget where we both can be happy, please share.
Rome: Studied hard, need some tutoring
Hello RomaHounds,
We are spending 3 nights (Thurs., Fri, Sat.) in Rome mid-May, staying behind the Pantheon on Via Santa Chiara. We are eager diners, he a fish lover (the more suction cups, tentacles, whiskers, and eyeballs the better) while I am more of a land animal eater. We will happily spend 40-50 euro each including wine for a simple, tasty meal of a shared appetizer, a pasta each, and maybe a shared secondi. We are completely uninterested in being punished for the sin of being tourists (seated in the basement or attic, charged extra, etc.) no matter how good the food might be. Unless there is new information, that leaves out Grano and Antico Arco.
We don't mind eating at the same place twice, and understand this might be an advantage. We don't need a variety of Italian -- fresh, simple, seasonal is perfect.
Good value wine is important to us. I'm a recently-graduated sommelier, so I know it doesn't have to be expensive to be good. Unfortunately, my teacher was dismissive of Italian wines; part of my mission on this trip is to fill in the gaps in my education. But it doesn't have to all happen in Rome as we are headed to Tuscany and Cinque Terre later.
We hope to take in one major sight in the morning, eat a good lunch, take a nap, and head out for a decently late dinner -- we LOVE eating late Euro style.
Based on what I've been able to discern from the staggering number of posts on the topic of eating in Rome, I've got a pretty small list. Please correct me if I have the neighborhoods wrong or it's not walking distance -- and add something if you are truly called to do so. All comments are appreciated.
On our first night we thought we would wander around the immediate Pantheon area and have dinner in the neighborhood or close enough to walk. I've narrowed it down to:
Armando al Pantheon,
Roscioli
Osteria Enoteca al Bric
Ditirambo
Friday lunch near the Colosseum:
Hostaria de Nerone
Enoteca Cavour 313
Friday Dinner near Spanish Steps:
Palatium
La Campana
Saturday lunch near Vatican:
Trattoria Lilli
Pizzarium
a picnic from the Mercato Trionfale
Saturday Dinner:
A repeat maybe or a place we didn't hit on Thursday or Friday
Thank you all,
Amy

Clarification: Santa Barbara Birthday Dinner
Hi glbtrtr -- I did see your post, which was the inspiration for my clarification. I really appreciate your ideas... I joined Julienne's mailing list and they are a contender. Thanks!
Clarification: Santa Barbara Birthday Dinner
I am trying to decide where to be treated for my birthday dinner Halloween weekend in Santa Barbara. I like Buchon, having been there on many occasions. I am interested in Stella Mare, and Julienne has recently been suggested. Money isn't an issue. I want great food and wine -- where you stop talking and close your eyes because it tastes so good -- pleasant and knowledgeable service, and a convivial atmosphere. Any reason I should choose one over another?

Birthday Dinner -- Help Me Choose
My birthday is this weekend and I can't decide where to go for the big dinner -- Buchon or Stella Mare's. I have been to Buchon many times and always enjoy it and I have no doubt they will make me happy. I have never been to Stella Mare's but I adore French bistro food more than anything. Anybody have any opinions that could help me decide one way or the other?

Nice Restaurants in FQ with non Seafood Options
Mr. Bs, Emeril's and Brigtsens all have excellent options for non-seafood eaters. Emeril's is pretty spendy, a bit less so at lunch. A gentleman won't feel out of place without a jacket at lunch. I adore Brigtsen's (have taken many cooking lessons from Frank Brigtsen), which has probably the best duck in town, and is pretty casual for a New Orleans fine restaurant. But, it's a long streetcar or cab ride Uptown. I have had really positive experiences at Galatoire's (pre-K) and a couple of very unhappy ones (post-K). As far as the menu goes at Galatoire's, there are plenty of options both seafoody and not and it's all delicious and very representative of New Orleans cuisine..but we caught an attitude the last couple of times and have been reluctant to return. Galatoire's is more formal -- all the men will be in jackets and the ladies in dresses or dressy pantsuits. Even dressed correctly we were given the worst table in the house when others were open, ignored for 30 minutes (not even bread or water), requested another table, were made to wait longer, and then were ignored at our new table for almost 20 minutes. If someone is not a foodie and doesn't want to dress up, I'm not sure Galatoire's is worth it. Just my experience.

Donna's Bar & Grill: Say It Ain't So
Thanks, roro -- Offbeat was actually the first place I looked for a story but nothing came up for me...it's a shame about Donna's anyway.
First timer in New Orleans at Christmas
Last time I was in New Orleans around Christmas time I had the Reveillon Dinner at Upperline. Reveillon (French for awakening) was a grand breakfast served after midnight mass on Christmas Eve during the old Creole Days. Now the tradition is updated and restaurants serve a multi-course dinner echoing the feasts of New Orleans' early days. I took my mom and we both loved it -- the food was good as ever at Upperline and we loved learning more about New Orleans history.

Donna's Bar & Grill: Say It Ain't So
During pre-trip research I saw on Donna's Bar & Grill website that they are gone for good. I know that they were mainly a music venue but Charlie did a nice job with the late night bbq. Anybody got the story?
