High hopes for Pops:(
I'd add Petit Robert to the list of good value South End restaurants.
Best fried Calamari?
I love the calamari at 28 Degrees, with its 3 dipping sauces. $14.00 and well worth it!
empanadas in the Boston area
They're well flavored, even including peppers, onions, olives, and hard-boiled egg whites! Yum! However, I enjoy them with a little Cholula hot sauce!

Try Foodies on Washington Street across from the Cathedral for great take-out chicken and beef empanadas!
Domani
Had a pleasant lunch at the bar! Fried calamari ($9) and tagliatelle bolognese ($15) accompanied by a nice vermentino. Dessert, apple marzipan tarte, with a brachetto.
Word has it that Marisa and Rita, from Mare, Bricco and Umbra, are teaming up again with Rene at Domani! Sounds interesting!
Bouchee?
Had a pleasant luncheon on the patio! A fine Cote du Luberon ($30). Escagot ($10) untraditional, but good. Croque Madame ($12)rich and tasty. Friend had Brown Butter Trout ($13)moist and delicious. Creme Brulee ($7) and Tart Tatin ($8) both delicious. Service prompt and friendly. Will return.
empanadas in the Boston area
Foodies has beef and chicken empanadas to take out at various days of the week. Sometimes Wednesdays and Saturdays! Very good!
Best Steak under $20
PapaRazi at Newbury and Dartmouth
Fileto balsamico with roasted veggies: $19.95
Very good!
Also good bar and wine list.
Pleasant Lunch at Restaurant L
Haven't been in a couple of years. They've spent money on a update. Looks good. Needs color on the walls. Food very good! Sat at bar. Great service! Bartender very attentive and knowledgable. Trista?
A very pleasant Arneis with tuna, shrimp avacado summer roll and Laotian barbaqued ribs. Brachetto with goat cheese cake and pear reduction sauce. Very reasonable! $42.00 pre tip. Anyone else had similar experiance?
Caffe Umbra
Had dinner there Friday. Food great. Menu change with grat small plate choices. No word of closing, but the place was virtually empty. Why is it that, while other Wahington Street restaurants like Pho, Union, Stella and Toro are booming, Umbra remains almost unknown? Food is great. Bar used to boom, What do they need to do?
New Barbara Lynch place in the South End?
Living in the South End, it'll be far easier walking to Waltham Street than to Symphony, or depending on the Copley Square market. Something tells me that SE residents are not going to worry about Barbara's prices. They know the quality will be there.
The food - really - at 28 Degrees
I find that going to 28 Degrees on a non-weekend evening offers a better dining experience.
Lobster sliders are back! Also on the menu are crab louie martinis and seared yellowfin, in addition to the $1.00 Island creek oysters between 5:00 and 7:00. A great Chateauneu du Pape Blanc at $11.50 a glass! Tonight they also had a crab and avocado pizza! Good, but could have used less oregano.
The food - really - at 28 Degrees
IMHO, the food is above average, sometimes very good! Apps are good but small and rather expensive. Try the pizzas, the calamari, and the mini-burgers. Nice Italian wines! The hamachi, when they have it is excellent! Between 5:00 and 7:00 Island Creek oysters are available for $1.00 each. Service is excellent, as, I'm told are the cocktails. Give it a try!
First visit to Petit Robert Bistro II
After 3 visits, all at lunchtime, I've found the service attentive and courteous, the food above average, the air conditioning in the dining room comfortable, and the music pleasant but unobtrusive.
Today, had the escargot, mussels, and pate, all excellent. 2 glasses of Guigal rose, and tarte tatin, total befor tip approximately $47.00.
A very pleasant experience, reminding me of the old Au Beauchamp on Mt. Vernon Street on the Hill.
Bouchee?
I happen to like their wine list, which is above average for Italian restaurants of this level, the beef capaccio (sic), and the bifsteca balsamico. I can always get a seat, and the service is not offensive. I'm only referencing the Darmouth Street original, not the mall clones.
Bouchee?
Why would I say other than what I said? Abe & Louie's and Papa Razzi on Dartmouth are good restaurants, compared to other BBRG restaurants. I'm sure Tim will elevate this new restaurant as well!
Bouchee?
Come on, Penny, Abe & Louie's and Papa Razzi on Dartmouth do rise above their more pedestrian product! Let's give Tom a chance! Maybe Charlie and company will do it right!
The Butcher Shop doesn't care.
BTW, It's $14.00. For that you get a 100% house-made pork bratwurst, which, I notice, is many times enough for 2!

I'd suggest that you not cancel your reservation. Go and judge for yourself. I personally enjoy TBS, with whatever faults it might have. I hope you do too.
