May 2012 Openings and Closings

And practically across the street from Artisan Bistro so that ups the naming confusion

West Bridge - Kendall Square

I stopped in last evening and liked every bit about this place. The menu is definitely a bit meat heavy, but the dishes are small enough so that you don't feel too overwhelmed. The proseco on tap wasn't ready last night but the cocktails and wine list kept me happy.

First Soft Shell Crabs Sighting

I believe it was sauteed but I could be wrong. The menu says 'crisped soft shell crab w/ white almond romesco, radishes & bitter orange'.

First Soft Shell Crabs Sighting

The soft shell crab was so good at Scampo that I will have a hard time restraining myself from going back every night from now until the end of the season.

BEACON HILL. CAMBRIDGE ST (BOS) maybe FAN HALL AREA

Depending on timing, Villa Mexico is still open. If you are looking for food to bring back to the hotel, you couldn't do any better than a burrito from Villa Mexico.

February 2012 Openings and Closings

Fins Sushi and Grill looked open for business last night after the game. I just called and they confirmed they are open - shortened hours tonight and standard hours tomorrow on which are roughly 11:30-10 or 11

Cheesecake in and around Cambridge

Haven't had in awhile, but that ricotta pie at Gran Gusto is fantastic!

January 2012 Openings and Closings

You are right, didn't read that far!

January 2012 Openings and Closings

Burdick's in Back Bay opens Monday the 23rd

Late night slice

I like Felcaro's too but I think they are only open late thurs-sat. I have walked past mid-week and seen them closed up by 11.

Post Your Three Favorite Things You ate in Boston in 2011

Three favorites in Boston 2011 would be:
Beef carpaccio at Scampo
My first soup dumplings at dumpling cafe
Selection of meats, pate, mousse and cheeses at the Salty Pig

LOBSTER ROLLS: DOES SIZE REALLY MATTER?

Going with the idea that a good lobster roll is a treat, try Lydia Shire's lobster popovers at Towne on a day you are really deserving of a treat.

December 2011 Openings and Closings

As well as Gridler's Burgers (per sign on door yesterday) on Cambridge St.
Fin's; however, is still quiet, anyone with any update for them?

ISO of a hip new restaurant with good drinks, hipster vibe

3 Little Figs opened today in Somerville

I need a one-upper

Throwing out some random Cambridge places that might fit the "have heard of it and want to go/go again"/somewhere not in the usual rotation that I always forget about when put in a similar situation -
The Druid in Inman Sq; Technique at Le Cordon Bleu; Green Street Grille, one of the Brizilian spots in E. Cambridge like Muqueca

Looking for stylish dining options for a DC Foodie

These suggestions (Island Creek, Coppa, Scampo, Bistro Du Midi, Eastern Std and Craigie) are great and fit the desire for both good food and fashionable spots. I will add Woodward at the Ames Hotel. If you truly want fashionable - hit up Scampo on Thursday and then head upstairs to the Liberty Hotel's "fashionably late" fashion show.
Craigie would be great for brunch or go to Russell House in Harvard Square followed by a stop at L.A. Burdick's for Hot Chocolate. The Beacon Hill Bistro does a nice brunch if you feel like staying closer to the hotel or couldn't resist going to Craigie for dinner already.
By the way Eastern Standard and Island Creek are basically next door to each other so it makes it a nice back-to-back for food and drinks.

Cambridge Street - Beacon Hill - Frustrating!

If a good take-out Indian like punjabi Daba in Inman opened at The Federal I would be happy. As for fins, I am tracking the progress daily. I have tried to like Ma Soba but I just find it pretty stale. The soup and sashimi are fine but I stay away from all maki there.
I agree that you should take advantage of Scampo, it is fantastic.

September 2011 Openings and Closings

The Federal on Cambridge Street was all papered-up and closed today. A sign on the door said The Federal is closed. Thank you for your patronage.

Looking for a restaurant with a very nice "relish tray" and good shrimp dip, too.

Check the website for 75 Chestnut. I think it would appeal to all in your party.

May 2011 Openings and Closings

As noted at the end of April, Phoenicia has closed. The permit on the window notes the addition of a sushi bar (and a restroom). anyone heard details on a targeted opening date?

Some lunch recs in Cambridge to complement my Boston trip?

Good call on the fish sandwich at the Druid.

If you want something very close to the hotel, you must go to a little fish shop a couple blocks away called Louies' Alive N Kickin' Lobsters. They will make you a lobster sandwich. There is no seating inside, just lobster tanks and a fish case, but there are a couple picnic tables outside in the parking lot if the weather is ok. It is so close to your hotel that you could always stop by and pick one up to eat back in the room. I'm not sure of the times though, Give them a ring first to make sure they are open: (617) 876-0451

After East Coast, hit up Christina's for Ice Cream.

Best Cheese you've had from Formaggio Kitchen/ Wine and Cheese Cask

After reading through all of the great thoughts on this thread, one thing I would add would be to mention when you plan to actually eat the cheese that you are buying. If you are in Huron Village on a Wednesday and decide to shop for your Saturday night dinner, you will buy a different cheese then if you are racing home 5 minutes later to enjoy it with some crusty bread.
Personally, I couldn't say what my favorite is... my tastes vary by the day so I shop to suit my current desire not trying to recreate a past perfection.

Solo Diner Visiting Boston - ideas?

You could take the T one stop "inbound" to the Charles/MGH stop and walk down Charles for a taste of Beacon Hill. There are a handfull of nice options on and just off Charles Street starting at the Liberty Hotel with Scampo and Clink and then heading down Charles towards the Common - The Paramount, 75 Chestnut, Beacon Hill Bistro.

Please help organize my bar crawl...er, I mean short visit.

You are describing my kind of day in a new city.
If you are near Fenway, stop into Eastern Standard. They have some great starters and very good drinks. The atmosphere is nice too.
If you are walking through the financial district, stop into Mr. Dooley's for a good pint and you might catch some music. They also serve up massive portions of Irish comfort foods in case you are really hungry or to share.
For the game on Sunday, The Times isn't too far from South Station. It is right on the Green Way. I caught a couple World Cup games there and really liked the clam chowder.
Have fun

September Openings and Closings

walked by Finagle A Bagel in Harv Sq last night and it looked closed with signs in the window. I don't usually pay attention to the space so I don't know if or how long it has been closed. I searched around here and didn't find any mention, but yelp notes it as closed which leads me to believe it has been closed for awhile.

Dinner ideas for Saturday Night in Cambridge

I would also add Casablanca

Cape Ann CSF

The fish is great and so fresh. I have had to take a little break because of scheduling reasons and not having enough mouths to feed at home so I am off of the email lists. If anyone is signed up in Cambridge and can't make a pick-up, I'll gladly pick it up and send you a check to cover the weeks share. I look forward to signing up again for the winter shrimp or spring/summer share.

Need help with rehearsal dinner for ~25 guests on a Friday night

Too bad about Gran Gusto... How about Russell House downstairs. I've seen a couple private parties down there. They have a screen type curtain to pull around a private party or the sectioned off area to the left of the bar at the bottom of the stairs. Or Dante
