I'm being gifted expired food.
Well now I'm obsessed.... it makes me ask myself the following questions:
Has boss witnessed OP eating nothing but obviously swiped packages of saltine crackers for lunch and worried about the nutritional imbalance of her diet?
Does boss see OP's lower body mass index and leap to misguided conclusions?
Is boss actually amorous of OP and the expired goods items merely an excuse to initiate dialogue?
Is boss a kleptomaniac who regularly robs dollar stores (which always have expired goods!), and is trying to offload the overflow of his efforts?
I'd ask him why! with a smile of course.
Top Chef Canada, Season 2, Episode 2 (spoilers)
I just don't even understand Mike Holmes as judge. Qualifications? "I like meat". "Too much garden in my drink". He isn't even entertaining! I agreed with Kunal, the pasta with grain salad? That menu was disjointed!
Best high tea experience for Mother/Daughter in Vancouver
if it isn't too late, noticed that faubourg has high tea from noon to five, The bistro area in the back is a bit cramped but at least it's foodworthy
Best high tea experience for Mother/Daughter in Vancouver
I second the underwhelmed comment. Was there a few months ago. Very average scones, the sandwiches were bland... it's a nice setting, but not food worthy.
Can you hounds help me out with some dinner party advice?
Late to this party, but as a parent of two insanely, mind-bendingly clumsy and destructive kids, family-friendly for me means: please, for the love of your chosen deity... leave the fine china behind closed doors, and do not serve water in your favorite handblown tumblers as I will feel compelled to buy a whole new set when my 50 pound three year old knocks it over with his sleeve!!! I have to bring my own chair covers when dining in my mother's cream-suede upholstered dining room.
Have You Ever Seen Real Korean Grown Rice For Sale Here?
Out of curiosity, why are you looking for korean rice in particular? Most koreans I know, my family included, all eat the american and japanese varieties. Is there something special about the korean variety?
Anywhere that sells decent butter for a decent price?
unfortunately I can't find plugra or kerrygold here. If you happen to go across the border, they have kerrygold at costco, and at trader joe's. They stopped carrying plugra a couple of years ago. The foothills has a clean flavor, but can't compete with the european style ones.
Pound cake: cream cheese vs sour cream vs buttermilk vs heavy cream
I have to agree. I tried a recipe with sour cream that looked promising, adn the texture was odd. Some people liked the flavor, but like ipse said, it just wasn't, well, pound cake!
Chinese Beef Brisket Curry in GVRD?
Don't feel qualified to judge the quality of the dish, but at Deer Garden Signature Restaurant ( or something like that), the beef brisket curry dish was full of beef, a less strident yellow, and not so heavy.
Nicli vs Bibo
well let me know if I am just giving naan a bad name :) For the record, i love naan. I would just rather eat it with makhni than mozzarella
Vancouver (3 nights) and Tofino (2 nights)
Santouka here usually has a line, and since you do have one in SD, I wouldn't think you would want to waste time in a lineup for it here. The poutine at Boneta is excellent, and they have a great, varied menu. You could kill two birds with one stone there with a nice dinner.I never found anything like it when I lived in SD.
Restaurant recs
Just to answer your question about Lupo, yes, it's really good. Full disclosure: I know the owner. BUT I truly enjoy the food every time I go. I have had everything from the lobster risotto to the grilled ribeye, and everything is delicious. I also like the atmosphere. A little less "old boys' club" than Cioppino's. I haven't been to La Buca though, so can't speak to that.

Nicli vs Bibo
The soggy center doesn't turn me off so much, in most cases. But when the dough becomes, for lack of a better word, slimy-ish under the ham, it's a little off-putting. But I am no pro... is it supposed to be like that? I just want to be able to chew my pizza, middle included :)
Nicli vs Bibo
Three pizzas in one weekend, yes, mildly obsessed. So many options now, so trying to find my favorite.
Nicli on Friday night: we were there at 6 pm, and it was already full! Seeing as how there is nothing but pizza on the menu, the turnover was quick, and service was good. We ordered a marinara, and a diavolo. The roasted garlic on the marinara was a nice touch. The fior di latte was really flavorful.
My issue was this: the whole time I was eating it, I was thinking "naan"! I felt like I was eating naan with italian flavors scattered on top. The crust had a nice char on the bottom, like naan, was pillowy with a slight pull, like naan, and no yeasty flavor with chew, like naan.
I did love the chili oil they bring you on the side, and I dipped the naan into it happily, as was everyone else around me.
Bibo on Sunday at lunch: we were there early, the only ones there, and oddly, service was slow. I guess the waitress had a lot to catch up on from her previous night with the co-workers. That was fine. Much more impressed with the pizza dough flavor, but it was decidedly soggy in the middle one bite into the proscuitto pie. Garlic was sliced and scattered (all in the middle) on the margherita, and it was nicely cooked.
the pastas were really well-received by fellow diners.
Campagnolo remains the one to beat for me.

Milk in bags ... Are Canadians weird, or are Americans the weirdos?
We don't have it here in BC either. I actually miss it. Don't ask me why.
Great deals at Costco
Just noticed some maple butter today. Smeared on honey wheat toast and butter, it was great.
Brownie recipes!
I love chewy brownies as well, and went on a two month brownie bender. The Taunton/Fine Cooking Chew brownie is the one to beat, in my opinion. If you can't find the recipe online, Iw ill be happy to post.
Top Chef Masters meets Mad Men
yes! That Gael Green was ghastly. Can' wait to see Ruth in action
Best sushi, biggest value, best taste in Vancouver... please post your favorites.
I know that Surrey hardly qualifies, but I checked out Tawara on Highway 10 as per a review in the Sun and was not disappointed. It is Korean owned and operated, but everything was fresh, the cooked items were very flavorful, and portions were surprisingly big. I can't stomach the BIG VALUE huge slabs of nominally fresh fish on hunks of mashed rice. But also can't pay out the arse for sea fresh fish on particle perfect rice beds either. This is the place that made me the happiest in a while.
How to make a decent cup of tea, following George Orwell's golden rules. on Slate.
Thank you, GC, for the link. I feel vindicated! my mother cursed me out as mad when I refused the tepid, already-boiled water in the kettle for my cup of tea.
THOMAS HAAS CAFE - do they make their own bread?
Just had a sandwich at their west end location, and the bread was perfect. When toasted under the panini press, it became perfectly golden, crisp and flavorful to boot. I tried asking a waitress if they make their own bread, but was basically given a silent, but distinct, "sod off". They were very busy. So was hoping someone here might know?
TC Just Desserts: Finale [spoiler]
HAHA!! oh my god, so true. I would rather fling myself over the TV to prevent my son from watching Morgan rather than Zack!
Asian food courts - that ONE great dish
sorry, maybe this is obvious, but what is RPM? thanks
help! dumb question: can I bake a pie in a tart pan with a removable bottom with no effect?
thanks to both of you. I will give it a go.
help! dumb question: can I bake a pie in a tart pan with a removable bottom with no effect?
Thanksgiving is upon me, I am committed to making two pies with only one pie pan (pyrex). One is a pumpkin, and one is a caramel apple pie. I have tart pans with a removable bottom, and shallow cake pans... would either of these do for a pie? And which pie would you bake in the actual pie dish? Does it matter?
Nelson BC - anything worth checking out?
yes please, planning to head out sometime soon. enjoy!
Nelson BC - anything worth checking out?
don't miss the kootenay co-op bakery... don't let the name frighten you, it isn't all granola and sprouted grain loaves. really delicious pastries.
What do you do with your food processor blades?
ok, don't mock me, but i actually sewed a little holder for the blades, like a knife roll. I used old placemats, sewed the compartments, attached a ribbon and now I can close it up, toss it in a drawer and not have to worry about severing a digit when I am digging around.
What I Like about the New Site 8/10/2010
I like the redesign a lot. All the red on the old one was very distracting/offputting to me. I don't mind readjusting the contrast or brightness of my screen when I navigate between websites. As the changes are in transition, I think it will just take a bit of time to adjust. Man, we CHs seem harsh! you would think someone took your puppy and had it neutered and tie dyed.
