Recs around Lexington Hotel

Thanks for all the info Kathryn. Yes we are staying at the Radisson. We are not opposed to riding the subway, but like I mentioned in my original post, we would prefer some places close to the hotel. Type of cuisine really doesn't matter, we like all kinds. Just looking for some good recommendations by locals so we don't waste any of our few meals there on places the locals would avoid.

Recs around Lexington Hotel

NYC Hounds,

I am a longtime Phoenix hound, recently transplanted to Seattle. My wife and I are spending the weekend in NYC, staying at the Lexington Sat and Sunday night next week. We are looking for recommendations within walking distance (lets say a half hour walk) from the hotel for any meal. We are adventerous eaters, especially like authentic ethnic food. More interested in quality food versus being part of 'the scene' so we typically lean towards smaller, family run places. Because of my Phoenix background, I was disspointed to hear Los Dos Molinos closed. We were planning on making a run there.

Thanks for your help ahead of time.

Seattle hound that has just checked in to Liberty Hotel, looking for good places to eat within walking distance of hotel. Not looking for fancy high end, but rather good quality local food.

Wow me!

ONLY in Seattle - specialties and restaurants

I made my first trip to Sitka and Spruce last Friday for lunch and loved every bite. I can't wait to go back and also to try the Corson Building, owned by the same people. For pics and a brief write up on my journey check out Tao of Chow.

Agate Pass Cafe

We took our maiden voyage to Agate Pass Cafe for Sunday brunch and I will have to say we got mixed results. We showed up at 11:00 and the place was only about half full. We were greeted with a smile, seated right away and poured some excellent coffee. The waitress took our order and after she left, I commented to the rest of our party (there was four of us total), that I am always impressed by someone that doesn't write down the order, but is able to memorize everyone's wishes. I also qualified that with I am impressed if they get it right.

Then the wait, and the wait and the wait. Keep in mind there is only 10-12 table tops in the place and it was half full when we got there and I would say we waited at least 45 minutes for our meal. After about four cups of coffee, our meals finally showed up and wouldn't you know it, they forgot one of our breakfasts. Now amazingly, they were able to whip that out in five minutes, which makes you wonder what the other 40 minutes was about earlier, but I digress.

The food itself was pretty good. Two of us got the Polenta Pancakes, one got French Toast and the order that had to be whipped up was the Vegetable Ragout. The food is good enough, that I could probably convince my fiancee to give it another try, but I sure hope we just hit an off day in the service dept. Our side of the water, so needs good, high quality, independent destinations, I hope Agate Pass can rise to the occasion.

What's good in Kitsap?

I concur, Hales is a hit. I like their beer selection and all of the food I have tried has been good, highlighted by what I will call the best wings I have had in this area. Hales added to Silver City give our side of the water a couple of good Brew Pub choices!

Moving to Seattle SOON, looking for some things

Bax,

I too am a Valley of the Sun transplant. I miss Bianco's Pizza and Sandwiches as well. For Pizza, the closest I have come to his is Serious Pie. Haven't really found a Pane equivalent yet. I also have been Jones-ing for some Richardsons (which I heard burned down), Los Sombreros or Barrio Cafe gourmex food. The closest I have come in that space is Pesos, but it was well below what the Holy Trinity provided in AZ.

Something I have enjoyed up here, that I didn't experience in Phoenix area is GastroPubs. Try Quinn's and Spur, they are exceptional!

Romantic / Special Occasion Dinner Vancouver this Saturday night

Not so much set on any one type of cuisine. We are very adventurous eaters, but more looking for quality, service and intimate/romantic setting.

Romantic / Special Occasion Dinner Vancouver this Saturday night

The innkeepers recommended a new place in West Vancouver called Fraiche. Anyone have any experience with it?

After surfing this board, Jules French Bistro was leading the pack. Will this fit the bill? We love all kinds of food. Are there better suggestions?

Thoughts on Pesos?

Went to Pesos a couple of weekends back and enjoyed outselves, although I felt like they just missed the mark a little when my carnitas were a bit over fried and dried out. Other then that, the rest of the meal was fabulous.

What has been everyone else's experience?

Any other GourMex recommendations? For more details on our visit as well as me waxing nostalgically for the Mexincan food in the desert southwest, check out my post in Tao of Chow.

The New Flower for Valentine's Day, Poppy

I thought a lot about my post over the weekend and I have a little different slant on why Poppy gets such mixed reviews. I think consistency could be an issue like I posted above, but I am wondering how much the fact that Poppy really is so unique and the fact it tries to present you with some many different flavors in one dining experience. I have seen comments about how the food doesn't seem to go together. While some people might find that a distraction, others might find that intriguing. Anyway, there is no real definitive answer, but just like any real form of creative expression, the lense that someone looks, listens or tastes it through are as much of the equation as the experience itself.

Weekday lunch suggestions in Downtown Seattle (Pioneer Square/Financial District)?

I like Natalie's Seattle Deli recommendation. I love their Banh Mi. I also like Pho Bac for good cheap Pho. I have also been really enjoying Elliott Bay Cafe for a creative menu executed well. A few other tried and true lunch spots for me are Samurai Noodle, Bakemans and Cafe Zum Zum.

The New Flower for Valentine's Day, Poppy

I guess the theme I would pick up from the differences in our experiences is Poppy lacks consistency. I hope it is something they realize and work to remediate, because when they are on (like they were for our visit), it is spectacular and I would hate to go and having experienced the bar as high as we did, be dissapointed with mediocre!

The New Flower for Valentine's Day, Poppy

I was a little nervous tackling our maiden voyage to Poppy on Valentine's weekend, since it is such a different experience and although the reviews are generally positive on Chowhound, I saw mixed reviews elsewhere. Most of the complaints centered around service and price/value.

Luckily for me, I have an adventerous foodie as my Valentine and we enjoy the out of the ordinary and unique experiences and to sum it up succinctly, Poppy surpassed all of our expectations and we had an incredible experience.

To immediately address the two most common concerns I had read about, our service was spectacular. Friendly, attentive, curteous, funny and knowledgeable. We did not have to ask for anything, all of our needs were handled proactively including the always challenging keeping Irena's water glass full! Yes the whole meal experience took close to 2 hours, but we knew that going in and we were ready for the deliberate pace. As far as value for the money paid, Poppy ain't cheap, we spent close to $150 bucks for two, but I don't mind spending that type of money if I feel like the experience warrants it and we thought it did.

Now to the food. I can honestly say I don't think I had one dish, with the exception of the scrumptious fresh baked ginger cookies on the dessert Thali that I had ever had prepared the way the Poppy chefs did. So just from an adventerous perspecitve it was awesome. From Pecan encrusted Lamb, Lavender Duck, Cauliflower spread for the Naan, Chiogga Beets with Honey and Walnuts to Carrot Walnut Cake with Roasted Pineapple and Cream Cheese Mousse, every dish was a new epicurean discovery.

Even the cocktails were amazing. I had the spicy Papi Delicious and it blew me away.

Poppy jumps to the top of our dining list and a place we will happily take our other foodie friends!

okonomiyaki in seattle?

I had some okonomiyaki at Kushi Bar and I would put it in the 'decent' category. Not as good as what I got in Japan, but still enjoyable. The overall experience at Kushi Bar was fun.

Serious Pie

Maybelle,

You will love the Sprouts and Pork Belly starter. What was cool is the preparation method for the Brussel Sprouts. They weren't boiled or steamed to mush, instead it looked like they were peeled apart leaf by leaf and possibly quick fried. They were still firm, but cooked. Very delish!

VP,

Wow, a lot different crust experience for us. Ours was not greasy, a very good combination of light and airy with just the right crispiness. I think I could have eaten a whole basket of crust pieces and been happy!

Serious Pie

Hounds,

We took our maiden voyage to Serious Pie Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Four of us split two pies, a Buffalo Mozarrella/San Marzano Tomato and a Chanterelle and Truffle Cheese. They were awesome. The toppings were fresh and spectacular and everyone of us raved about the crust. We also had a delicous Brussel Sprouts and Pork Belly starter and the dessert Cannolis.

Price was very reasonable as well. Tab cam to about $65 bucks and all four of us were satisfied and full!

We will certainly be going back many times.

Interesting Dining on the Kitsap Peninsula

If you haven't already, check out the What's Good In Kitsap Thread. Been going for over a year with a lot of good info.

I live in the mountains above Belfair and Bremerton and my local favorites are Suzy's Korean BBQ in downtown Bremerton, Nattamit Thai in Silverdale and Hakata Sushi also in Silverdale.

Nattamit Thai

From a recommendation buried deep in the "Whats Good in Kitsap" thread, we made our maiden voyage to Nattamit Thai in Silverdale, WA. This little gem was awesome. A one woman show, that transports you into what feels like the dining room of your long lost Thai family friends.

If you are ever in the Silverdale area, be sure to carve out some time to check this place out.

What's good in Kitsap?

Sounds like a good time and you have convinced me to go back for another try.

We just gave Nattamit Thai a first try on Saturday and loved it! Basically a one person operation and you feel like you are eating in her dining room. Even had my hero Al Bundy on the tv behind the counter! The food was sublime and we definitely will be going back often!
