Steamed Cheeseburgers

Believe it or not, I had the beer steamed burger at the Sunset a few weekends back and it was surprisingly good.

"No Reservations - Boston" premiere on Monday 4/18

It seems like the shows are bouncing back and forth between "food porn"(his words), like his recent tweets chronicling his end of an era meal at El Buli with Jose Andreas, and then he's eating curare based stew and fresh water sashimi(yikes) in the Amazon.

It's still good TV, but some episodes are feeling a little elitist. For the most part the Boston episode seems like they went for the non-elitist angle.

Something interesting for lunch today: Baza's house-made kielbasa

Slightly off topic, but did you happen to notice if they were making sushi again?

A couple of weeks back I was told that the sushi maker had left, which was a drag because I found the rolls to be fairly decent, and great to bring back to the office.

Where to buy steak

Another vote for Kinnealy's at the fruit center. It's probably a good idea to know exactly what you want when you go there. I often find that the guys behind the counter are pretty much high school kids. Very helpful high school kids, but they sometimes have to call for help for more than basic questions.

I love the Gallows

Another thumbs up, we went earlyish last night, started at the bar with Martinis and beer respectively, the bar was nice, good service, watched the end of the red sox, shared a ploughmans, with excellent quality cheeses, pickles.

Then we got a table, very helpful server, we had the smoked scallop app. Smoked scallops gratinee with a roasted garlic head. Very, Very good.

For mains we had the New England Boiled dinner(chef corns his own beef), Berkshire Pork and split the basic Poutine. Way too much food all very, very good.

Only coffee after, no more room. All and all very good service, nicely done room. Very well executed dishes with high quality ingredients.

The only thing I thought was lackin was the beer choices, Delerium, was probaly the high point, but they could use some better craft choices, too many bud, bud light,

Other than that, I'll be hurrying back.

88 Wharf and Abby Park any oppinions?

I ate at 88 wharf last night. Not great. Weak paella, weak salads, I had a short rib paetzl main that got a B. Service was friendly but slow, slow for a room that was 60% full.

The kicker was someone was got it their head to continually, adjust the dimmers over our line of table(by the window) so I thought I was entering the initial phases of a stroke ;)

Which Petit Robert?

Eating out this Sat night for a b-day and I've narrowed it down to either Petit Robert, south end or Kenmore.

I've been to the Kenmore location a few times and am perfectly happy with it, but If anyone has input on the S. End location vs the Kenmore, I'd love to hear.

Thanks.

@Guinness. I agree. (I meant to say there's not much unusual as far beer.)

BTW, is there any place in mass that serves Russian River beers?

THE LEDGE -- It's Not an Upscale Sonny's

From what I've seen, there's much unusual at Ledge for beer. Stella and something called LedgeBrew is as esoteric as the tap selection currently gets..........

BTW, way too many flat screens.

Suffolk Grille Milton/Canton line (138)

You can do better. Low grade pub food, big curry college hangout. The staff is very friendly though. Depending where you are you have townsends, Ashmont Grill, then all of Jp and roslindale.

Is Tavolo in Dorchester Open Yet?

I got 3 pizzas to go from Tavolo tonight. I got there around 5:30 in order to check the place out while waiting for the pizzas. The only negative I found came first off. Parking is going to be a difficult issue. Tavolo is extremely close to Ashmont station which will be a boon in the future, but during the current renovations, parking seems to be very tricky.

Once inside, the place seems to have tons of potential, large, modern, extremely friendly staff. There weren't too many customers but there was a definite feeling that it was about to get busy.
The menu seems to key in on simple food with top notch ingredients.Pizzas, Panini, 8-9 pasta dishes(Carbonara, Linquine w/clams etc.) and antipasti that they treat like tapas(small $2 portions)
I was very surprised by the large bar that probably seats 30(?) Decent beer selection,(no time to check the wine list.

I ordered 1. Fungi pizza(crimini, tallegio and rosemary) 1 Pancetta Pizza(pancettta, tomato, fontina, thyme) and a Arugla, proscuitto, and ricotta pizza. All done neopolitan style, 12" crust, thin. The pizzas could have been a touch crisper for my tastes but I'll chalk that up to eating them at home(10 minute ride).

All three pizzas were very good with the Pancetta and Fungi being the standouts.

Overall this place has tons of potential, I wish I could have stayed longer, but I had people waiting at home for dinner.

I have every intention of returning to try more.

Espirit duVin -- Lower Mills

Keith,(the owner) is a good guy and very helpful when it comes to pairings and tasting of both wine and cheese. For the size of the shop I think the selection is very good.

Hyde Park Update

Ate at Townsend's early Saturday night. Good service, decent menu, very pleasant people working there, but... something is a little off. It seems as though they are leaning towards more of an upscale dining experience. It might have been preconceived ideas that I had going in, but I expected something a touch more pub like. Again, the food I had was perfectly fine, hanger steak came out a little cooler than I liked, (not cooking temp but surface) but other than that pretty good. Maybe I'm having trouble reconciling the large and very good beer list, with a fairly underwhelming bar area. I just have a hunch that the target audience may have to be re-worked. I'm pretty sure that Townsend's is the only place in a 10-15 mile radius that has two different preparations involving duck confit.

Sage or Grotto for 2 person semi romantic bday.

I didn't think the prices at Grotto were bad at all. We had 3 courses and split the apple pie/rum raisin desert(which was excellent) our bill was around $85 before wine, taxes, tip. Given the quality of the food, I thought the prices were very fair.

Sage or Grotto for 2 person semi romantic bday.

We ended up going to Grotto, pretty much right on the money. Gnocchi, very good.
Duck, excellent. Fondue, very good. Service, noticeably quick, efficient, friendly. The room was good, maybe a little more crowded and loud than I had anticipated. Not really a negative, just not a little busier than I thought it would be. All in all very good.

Sorry if this has been rehashed before.

Trying to choose between the two for dinner tomorrow night.

Haven't been to either spot. I was initially leaning toward Sage, but it seems like the new local, isn't as nice.

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Ashmont Grill service question

I'm saying that I shouldn't have to ask at this type of venue.

Ashmont Grill service question

I ate at the Ashmont Grill two nights ago for the first time. Fig and prosciutoo app, Flatiron Steak and Cruste Cod for mains.Fries as a side. Meals were good, maybe a touch small and a touch pricey for what they were but not a big deal. Service, friendly, efficient. My gripe is this. Is it too much to expect new silverware when you've finished your appetizer or salad and the mains arrive? It kills me when the initial set up is 2 Forks 1 knife, you use the salad fork and knife for the app, the main arrives, and the used knife goes right back on the table. This might fly at a diner, but when you're charging between $15-$22 for a main, I don't think clean silverware is allot to ask.
