Dinner at Soley!

Been wanting to try this place for a while. Read a pretty decent review in the Morning News and was definitely curious to try this Mexican/French. I have to say dinner was amazing. We started with a selection of ceviches and tartares. The scallop ceviche was fabulous. The fennel worked perfectly with the basil and orange. Our whole table agreed this one won. Light and delicious. The salmon tartare was our second favorite. The calamari ceviche and the shrimp were good but not as memorable as the scallop. For appetizer, I had the chile en nogada. This is a chile relleno stuffed with duck confit. Really terrific, especially the walnut cream sauce with little pomegranite seeds. Friends had the onion soup and the soley salad. The onion soup looked rather unappetizing while the salad looked very good, but I didnt try either.

For entrees we tried the snapper with risotto and the ribeye. The ribeye was a massive bone-in and seemed to be cooked a little on the rare side. But it was tender and well marbled. The snapper was crisp and very moist and my wife and her friend raved about the jalapeno-cilantro risotto. I ordered the waiters recommendation, the ancho pepper pork chop. Good call on the waiters part. The chop was perfectly cooked. Very juicy with a very flavorful dusting of ancho spice on the crust. A "truffle corn puree and tequila demi-glace" went perfectly with the chop. One of the best pork chops I have ever had.
Presentation on everything was very good and everyone cleaned their plate and wanted more.

The only negative I have is the wine list is nothing short of embarrasing. Pitifully few selections, and while the malbec by the glass I had was acceptable, the chardonnay from mexico my wife and her friend tried was truly horrid. (This was replaced by the waiter with 2 glasses of a decent australian chard not normally available by the glass) For the quality of the food here, the very short list of wines by the bottle is quite a shock. I was also amazed at the lack of people in the place on a saturday night. 7pm and there were only a handful of tables occupied. Amazing given how good the food was. The wife and I will definitely be back.

Thurs night foodie spot for wife and I

Coming thru SF on our way to wine country and not sure when we will make it in to town. So no reservation. Looking for good date spot with great food, good glass of wine. Dont mind eating at the bar. In fact we often prefer it! Other SF spots we love for reference; Bar Crudo, Rubicon.
