What can I do with "old" flour tortillas?
Shoot, I didn't read carefully!
I use corn.
What can I do with "old" flour tortillas?
Make migas - basically an egg scramble with leftover meat, some onion. Toss in the tortillas, torn up. Top with cilantro, sour cream, salsa, avocado....
One of my favorite brunch dishes.
Renton - any ideas?
Thanks so much for all the suggestions - will definitely be trying a lot of these! I'll let you know how it goes.
Dim sum at Tea Palace sounds excellent (it sucks in NY even in Flushing) and Naan-n-Curry as well. Don't think mom eats too much Indian food but she likes it. Five Guys we have out here and will definitely try to get up to Pike Place - I never miss it when I'm in Seattle!
Thanks again!

Renton - any ideas?
Will be in Renton for about a week, Tues-Mon visiting my mom.
Anything good in the area? I am pretty unfamiliar with the Seattle area in general so even if I have to travel a bit, would appreciate any suggestions. Hole in the wall breakfast spots, great sandwiches, nice dinner spots, etc.
I will eat anything/everything but would like to try foods that are unique to the area. Coming from Brooklyn.
Sorry for giving such a broad scope - I figure I'll have time to try a lot of stuff.
Thanks!
Group in Toronto with a couple of kids - I've already searched!
Jenna this looks great! Thanks for the suggestion.
Group in Toronto with a couple of kids - I've already searched!
Hi, I did a search but didn't come up with any results that met my needs. Hoping you can help me out. I will be in Toronto with a group of about 10 people. We're looking for something on a Thursday night.
Criteria:
* Most of the group will be staying at the Sheraton Centre, so something nearby would be ideal. I'm sure cabs/metro will be okay as well but I don't want to have to organize that too!
* We have a very picky 7-yr old (as in, her parents pack nutrition bars for her and she will only eat bacon or burgers) as well as a semi-picky 13-yr old so a kid's menu would be greatly appreciated.
* Pubs are okay as they seem to have the most variety (something for everyone). I've already got Beer Bistro on the list, anything else?
* No one is vegetarian.
For the rest of the trip I've got both Black Hoofs, Lardon and a Thai and pho spot on the list, and I can search for lunch recs. Just really need some great ideas for this dinner.
Thanks!

Dogs at Brooklyn Flea
Yes for sure they are. It's really fun eating a taco with a dog breathing down your neck.
Favorites at the brooklyn flea?
HNH BBQ - started by 4 friends from Houston. They really do brisket right. Best I've had in NYC. Also Mile End has a booth there now, and I daresay I prefer Montreal bagels to NYC's :-o
They are only at the indoor one because of the heat, but Liddabit Sweets is a year round favorite for me. They have awesome beer pretzel caramels and then this popcorn called breakfast of champions (I think) but it's caramel popcorn, bourbon, coffee, and BACON. Also their honey barley lollipops are a good little treat.
Huaraches from the Red Hook vendors as well - it's the same booth as the pupusas. It's basically a giant open faced taco but inside the tortilla are beans, and then they layer all the other goodness on top.
Also Brooklyn Grange sells produce there, all grown in a rooftop in Queens. They also make a fresh salad for $5 but it's not that great - they've got a ton of tomatoes lately. Yum!

Tusker Beer in Toronto?
I'm looking for either one. A group I traveled to Kenya with is having a mini reunion in Toronto so we were looking to have some Tuskers (we had both kinds on the trip).
And I'm looking for a bar or restaurant because I'm not from there so unless I want to buy it at LCBO and drink in my hotel room, that would be our other option.
Tusker Beer in Toronto?
Is there a bar or restaurant that serves Tusker Lager/Malt in Toronto preferably close to the downtown area?
Thanks!
Recipe organization? Need help with wedding gift.
Thanks! I did think about going this route and it seems the most practical. The plastic sheets will keep any food spatters off the recipes as well.
Recipe organization? Need help with wedding gift.
So my best friend is getting married and neither he nor his future wife cook very much. I got them a crockpot and want to also give them some recipes to go with it but need help in organizing them. An old-school recipe box would be ideal but I want them to actually use it later on and I fear they'll get lazy in trying to fill it with new recipes. Also his handwriting looks like caca.
Any ideas on other ways to put recipes together?
I want them to be recipes I've tried/invented myself so if anyone's got some delicious crockpot recipes, please pass them along so I can try them out!
Thanks
Kyochon - bummer!
We did this yesterday and walked right in and picked up our order - way disorganized for sure.
I thought the seasoning/flavor was good but wings sorrowfully small.
So, what're you cooking this week?
Sunday I made coq au vin in the crockpot so I've been eating the leftovers.
Tonight I'm making this http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/miso-vegetables-tofu-recipe.html which I can eat on Wednesday too, and then I'm not sure about the rest of the week yet.
Possibly something from the new issue of Saveur.
Long shot - Ming Tsai's Veggie lasagna
YES!! i totally forgot to check this thread. thanks so much!
need advice on pairing cheese with orange blossom honey
Agree with the ricotta cheese suggestion - ricotta goes with most fruit-based jams/honeys/chutneys.
If you don't want to go with a straight blue cheese, maybe a gorgonzola dolce? A little softer and milder.
Four Frozen Duck Leg Quarters in the Freezer... what to do?
what about doing a confit and then making cassoulet? it's a great stick-to-your-bones kind of cold weather recipe. and you can make it as spicy as you want! here's an easy confit recipe to get you started http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/easy_duck_confit/
the cassoulet sounds scary but it's not hard at all and it's great as a one pot dish.
Breakfast tacos; what is your favorite? Burritos too!
migas is awesome! i always have too many tortillas left over and it's a great way to use them up, plus a great way to use up leftovers.
i love chorizo in my migas and breakfast tacos.
Can anyone help me with a side dish?
In keeping with the Mexican theme, what about some black beans? I do diced onions, jalapenos and red peppers and sautee for a bit, then add black beans to the mix and season with salt and pepper. It's really easy and filling and good! You can top it with some chopped avocado before serving.
Long shot - Ming Tsai's Veggie lasagna
I had this recipe a long time ago and want to make this for some veg friends of mine.
It's got mushrooms, spinach and instead of bechamel he used plain yogurt - anyone find this online? There's also an onion sauce and balsamic reduction. I've done some searches but cannot find them anywhere! Even on the Food Network website. Were they pulled?
Can I freeze Chicken Satay and Gravlax?
i think gravlax will last a month in the fridge since it's cured. i wouldn't freeze it as defrosting would make it watery. you should be good with the satay and meatballs tho.
Canned 'octopus in garlic sauce' - what to do with it?
that sounds amazing - must look for it next time i'm at the store.
I need a broccoli side dish
http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/broccoli-crunch-recipe.html
i made this last xmas and it was absolutely delicious. i used cashew butter instead because that's what i had in my fridge.
Congee near Grand Central?
I'll have to give it another try next week - I wussed out and got wonton mee instead.
Congee near Grand Central?
Thanks! I doubt they'll deliver for a $3.23 order so I'll try to wrassle some people to go in with me.
Not going to die now.
Congee near Grand Central?
I will die today if I can't have congee for lunch. Anyone know of anything good near the Grand Central area? I'm on the east side, around Lex or 3rd Ave. Specifically I want pork & preserved egg congee. YUM.
Anybody been to Las Ramblas in the W Village recently?
Went on a weekday after work, at around 6-ish so I don't think that would help you. The food was just okay. We had the meatballs which were very dry, the duck sausage with quail eggs which were also very dry. The mushrooms were delicious though, they came to the table still sizzling and had lots of garlic.
It is a tiny spot so it might get crowded on a weekend.
El Paso recommendations?
Hi! I did a search and nothing recent came up. Going to El Paso to meet the Fockers this spring. Anything I absolutely need to check out? I am coming from Brooklyn and my BF is from El Paso but hasn't lived there in about 10-12 years so we are both pretty out of the loop. Trying to stay around $20/person tops and of course we must consume BBQ and Tex-Mex. I also would like to eat some authentic Mexican. I'm sure there's a lot. Please help me weed them out?
Thanks!
5 Day trip to New York - Where To Eat
To actually answer your question, here are some of my favorites:
Soba Totto 43rd and 3rd Ave - Japanese izakaya style dining. NYC has a lot of different kinds of Japanese food if you are into that. (close to GCS)
Ippudo - 4th Ave between 9th and 10th Streets - for me the best ramen in NYC right now.
Dovetail - West 77th at Columbus - the chef used to work at French Laundrey in Yountville. It's a little pricey for their tasting menu at $88 a pop but their sunday suppa is reasonable at $38 for 3 courses. (close to Central Park on the west side)
Momofuku Noodle Bar, Momofuku Saam Bar, Momofuku Milk Bar - all in the east village. I am not a fan of David Chang the owner/chef but my friends rave about his restaurants and NYC sure loves to hump his leg. If anything, try the Milk Bar for some interesting desserts.
Una Pizza Napoletana - I believe this is on 11th or 10th Street at 2nd Ave. For me the best neapolitan (thin crust) pizza in the city - go early because once they're out of dough that is it.
For tapas I'd suggest Boqueria - there's one near Union Square and a newer one now in Soho. This is pretty traditional Spanish tapas. I also like Sala 19 for this.
I would suggest Shake Shack at Madison Square Park for a fun outdoor experience but it will be freezing in January.
Barney Greengrass in the upper west side - real Jewish deli, delicious smoked fish.
Most of these are pretty affordable - hope this helps!
