Local recommendations-Columbia SC
I've posted here before, but would like some local recommendations of some of the must eat at places in Columbia. I'll go from dives to semi-fine dining. LOL I say semi-fine because I hate the type of places that just decorate your plate with a few pieces of food and a drop or two of sauce. i'm loving discovering on my own so many of the local places like Lulu's for hot dogs, and Mr. Friendly's for a laid back wonderful "new" Southern dining in a nice establishment. Come on folks, I'm here for the long haul, so don't let me down. Thanks in advance.
Best Burger, Columbia SC, 2010 and beyond
Even though the Mousetrap is only a few blocks from me, I haven't tried it yet, but will do so sometime this week. In the meantime I've also been looking for the best hot dog in the city. LOL I love comfort food. Tried a place out on Two Notch that I think is called Jimmy's Market? It's a gas station/convenience type store that sells dogs and even has a small sitting area. The chili dogs were good, but they were boiled/steamed. However at $1.88 a piece they were still pretty good. Even better were Lulu's, which is on Devine. Their dogs were grilled, and were very good. I've seen ads for Sandy's and will probably try them next. Any other suggestions? Oh and as I said I just moved here from Alabama and it is SO refreshing not to live in a "chain city" In Montgomery you've got your basic BK, MCD, Wendy's, Taco Bell, etc., on every corner, and for more "high class" dining there is also a Ruby Tuesday's on every corner, literally. I am so enjoying the huge choice of locally owned establishments, or small Carolina chains previously unknown to me.
South Carolina burger law
I have heard that in SC you can order a medium rare burger if you are over the age of 18. Not sure if the meat has to be ground on premises though.
Best Burger, Columbia SC, 2010 and beyond
I'm new here in Columbia and dearly LOVE a good burger. Have tried Pawley's and found them to be wonderful. However, I just stumbled across this web site last night and would like to share. Would like to know what the real locals on this board have to say about these folks' picks

Moving to Columbia, SC and need restaurant recommendations
Thanks Sister. Since I made my original post I've found several threads concerning Columbia eateries. Appreciate your recommendations!
bao in birmingham?
Dax, I live outside of Montgomery, AL, and have lived here for some 45 years. I also have always thought I lived in the Southeast. Guess you've got to have some Atlantic Ocean in sight to be in the Southeast anymore :)
Private Room in restaurant for potentailly disastrous wedding party
Oh I just realized that I will have been dirvorced by my husband of 28 years when y'all are tying the knot. Since our honeymoon was going to NO to watch Alabama play Miami, and lost the national title that year, I should have realized what I was getting into! I wanna come I wanna come :)
Moving to Columbia, SC and need restaurant recommendations
Howdy y'all! I am soon to be divorced and am moving to Columbia, where my elderly parents reside. As a new 55 year old single woman, I do enjoy a drink but am NOT into the bar scene. I will be living off of Forest Drive, past Richland Mall from the direction of The Laureat. I am very familiar with Mr. Friendlys, as this is my parents to go to lunch place on Wednesdays and LOVE it. They used to go to Motor Supply, but a few months ago they said the food and service fell off, so now they usuall go to Za's on Friday for lunch. I'm not especially into 5 star dining, LOL especially when I'm paying the bill. I like a nice relaxed place with good food that's reminsence of the old TV show Cheers. I currently live in Alabama (ROLL TIDE #1) where we are chain restaurant city. One thing I LOVE about Columbia is all the independent places you have there. So any recommendations in that aspect will be apprecited. Unfortunately my palate runs to American type food, so I'd like to know more about restaurants in that food range. Thanks in advance!
Hamburger Honeymoon
OMG the Vortex in Little Five Points is awesome! LOL if you want to see God, order their Bloom Shroom burger, at least that's what their menu says and I can attest to :)
I come to NOLA, fork in hand....if it passes curretn FAA carry-on regs.
While I'm not an LA native (although I did live there a good deal of my childhood) my brother lives in Lafayette. There's a grocery store there, sort of along the lines of Central Grocery, that gets rave reviews for their po-boys. I'm thinking it's called Old Thyme Grocery? I have eaten there 2 years ago and it was GOOD. Y'all help me out if that is the wrong name and/or if the quality has declined since my visit. Oh and BTW GEAUX SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, this is the best Chowhound post I've ever read. Is your family kosher? That could only add to your delima. LOL and your partner's redneck family is afraid of your urban Jewish family? Usually it's the other way around. Seriously I wish you all the luck in your lives together.
Help me avoid tourist traps!
Edible, please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is/are veal cheeks? I'm thinking the obvious, cheeks of the veal critter. Am I right?
10 worst dining trends of the last decade: Cupcakes, Kobe, Foam...
Thanks for the article Maria, it was very informative. I liked the chef's reply about "deconstruction" However, I've seen chefs on Chopped and The Next Iron Chef make dishes like this. It's not my cup of tea either.
Looking for budget dining in blue jeans
I just nuke mine for a few minutes. And I do prefer mine warmed up as opposed to cold. It's just jucier that way, at least to me. LOL all they really have to do to please me is put some of that marvelous olive salad in a bowl and give me some chips :)
What to order at Antoine's??
Although it's been a long time since I've actually been in NO, I've always found that most waitstaff in the older fine dining establishments in the Quarter to be rather rude. I thought that was part of the charm of the city.
Kenny Mayne: Worst Iron Chef America judge ever?
I saw that show too and I thought it was just me, but I guess that it was really just Kenny. However, in his defense, I too am a very picky eater and I'm not sure I'd like to try some of those dishes and would never had tried anything from the original Iron Chef show. But I also would turn down an offer to be a judge because, as someone above said, if I wasn't going to taste the entire dish I shouldn't be a judge. Oh and I loved the giggling actresses on the original Iron Chef "Oh this groundhog eye soup is just delicious" ==:)
Food Itinerary for New Orleans Trip in October
It's been a long time before Katrina since I've been in New Orleans, but I've always loved K Pauls. Definitely regional LA food and excellent service. You might check that out for Friday night, but the folks that actually live in NO can probably give you an update on how it is post Katrina. Also I just LOVE the Napoleon House's muff. I know it's heated which is not Central Grocery traditional, but I prefer mine warmed. It's a neat place to be whatever you eat there.
TNFNS final spoilers
Actually the contestants were asked several times what their culinary POV was and most of them already had titles for "their" shows in their heards. Jeffery's was Cooking without Borders, Michael's was Global A Go-go, Debbie, did you know she was Korean?, was Soul to Seoul, etc. But of course the PTB at Food Network knew better than the contestants what "their" shows should be about
TNFNS final spoilers
Melissa's show, originally titled Kitchen Survival Guide, is now $10 Dinners. So, she went through all the contests and competitions just to end up with a show telling folks how to prepare dinner for $10.00. Oh, and of course Food Network doesn't have anything similar to this concept in their lineup already (heavy sarcasim here). If you haven't read the 2,000+ posts at Bob's Blog on the Food Network site, people either hate the idea of the show, or they love it. I'm thinking the ones that love it are the newbie cooks and that concept will definitely appeal to that audience. And there is speculation and rumors also over there that the show, or the concept of the show, was already decided prior to the start of this year's episodes so the judges kept their eyes open for the contestant who best fit this type of show and it was Melissa. LOL I can just see what would have happened if Debbie, did you know she was Korean?, would have been the finalist and then got stuck with that lame show! Anyway I wish Melissa the best of luck and am waiting for Jeffrey's show to debute soon. Yes I HOPE Food Network is smart enough to give him his own show.
TNFNS #8 (spoiler)
Could it be that the Neely's together with Sunny (can't remember her last name) were there because they work for FN? I'm going to have to watch last Sunday's show again, because over at the FN board someone said that sometime during the evening Pat Neely is shown asleep LOL. Debbie had to go, she was a liar, manipulative and just a pain in the behind. She told some sort of untruth in every episode except for last week's. But you could see the judges favored her, probably because they wanted an Asian cooking show. I like both Jeffrey and Melissa, it will be tough choice next Sunday.
Next FN Star - Episode 3 - since no one's started one yet... [spoilers]
That's exactly what I was thinking, that Paula used sweet onions. Now I think that would have made an excellent dish with the watermelon and feta cheese. Also I think Eddie went WAY overboard on the amount of onion he used. Even sweet onions can overpower a dish if there are way too many of them.
Next FN Star - Episode 3 - since no one's started one yet... [spoilers]
And the Oxyclean guy passed away yesterday I think it was. Strange things going on it Hollyweird these days.
Next Food Network Star..ep 4 "spoilers"
Oh I so agree with you on the "healthy" cooking lady. I'm surprised she has lasted this long. At the end I think it will come down to Melissa and Jeff, with Melissa winning. What I'd like to see next time is a Food Network Star where all the 2nd place folks return, like Jag, the black gay guy, etc. I think that would be very interesting. Even though Jag dressed up his resume, it didn't hurt Irvine much :)
Where to purchase muffeletta's online.
I'm going to St. Louis next week to meet up with some online friends and I usually purchase a couple of real NO muffs to be delivered at our meeting place. The web site I used, neworleansgrocer.com seems to no longer exist. Their muffs came from Progress Grocery. Does anyone know of any places that ship already made muffs and if so the URL? I would be most grateful for any advice.
Man Vs Food
Suzy I agree with you, I like this show too. Gives me a chance to see restaurants that I know I'll never be able to go to, kinda like Guy's DDD. I like Adam and I do find him entertaining. And it IS better than those vacation shows. I watched one last night about the top 10 Carribean resorts. Yeah, I'd stay at one if I had Bill Gates kind of money.
Fiction books with recipes?
I love Joanne Fluke and her Hannah Swenson murder mystery series. Hannah is the owner of a cookie store/bake shop, who keeps finding dead bodies and then solving the murders. They are quite entertaining reads, and very clean language. I don't think I've even seen a "damn" in one of her books. And all of her books contain recipes for the cookies she refers to in each book. You can find out more about her books at www.murdershebaked.com
Parasols?
That was what the owner was saying, that their roast beef po boy was THE BEST, and durn if it didn't look it!
Parasols?
I was watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network and they were doing a "best of" kind of show. One part was when they visited a place in New Orleans called Parasols. The place didn't look too big and the folks eating there looked more like locals than tourists. Both the owners and the diners said this was the best place in NO for po-boys. I haven't heard it mentioned on this board so was just wondering what y'all think of it.
Rachael Ray scares us, er, announces again she plans to open a burger restaurant
Didn't know she was dreaming of opening a burger bar, but I have seen commercials recently for her own brand of dog food called Nutrish. Hmmmm burgers...dog food...burgers, the mind boggles :) But seriously if I lived in NYC instead of Alabama I would give her place a try.
Feasting on Waves
Oh man I completely forgot about it. I was having a Dog Whisperer DVD marathon via my DVD player. Oh well, I'm sure it will be repeated some time this week or next weekend. I do love Alton's "Feasting" seriesl
