Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - May 2013

I've bought yeast packets at TJs before, but it was likely around the holidays. I'm unsure if they carry yeast year-round.

I like the 10-minute farro, and 10-minute barley, as well.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - April 2013 [OLD]

I am a Puffins fanatic, and the boxes at Trader Joes are larger and cheaper than those at most other grocery stores.

I usually purchase the regular, but recently "rediscovered" the cinnamon. On my second box. I don't notice the pumpkin spice flavor, but I love pumpkin pie so maybe it's undetectable to someone not averse to the flavor.

The peanut butter puffins are tasty as well, but don't pack as much fiber as the other kinds for some reason. Barbara's also makes Chocolate Peanut Butter Puffins, but TJs doesn't carry that variety.

The Multigrain Puffins didn't win me over, and I've never repurchased them.

I like Barbara's Toasted Oat Squares too. Hearty and full of whole grain goodness. A bit more sugar than I like in my cereals, but they don't taste overly sweet.

I too love the smoked trout, but I consider it a splurge at over $3 a can. I treat myself once in awhile. The can has two servings, but I always manage to polish it off all at once.

The smoked sardines were a major nay, though I love TJs boneless/skinless in olive oil as well. The smoked trout is in a different league than the lousy smoked sardines.

Topped my salad with the balsamic grilled chicken breasts -- delicious! Thank you for the recommendation. The flavor worked well with my salad ingredients and dressing.

I used to love these, but slowly became averse to their flavor -- now I haven't bought them in months. I don't know what exactly put me off, but the taste and texture started to seem too processed (for lack of a more descriptive word).

I picked up the fresh balsamic roasted chicken breasts that another chowhounder recommended in the thread, so I'll give them a try for a quick protein option.

Nay -- Turkey club wrap. Not a new item, but I was looking for a non-messy handheld dinner to eat at a baseball game. Generic sliced turkey, hard bacon bits, way too much mayo, and some lettuce shreds and tomato cubes. Bland -- but satisfied my "non-messy" requirement at least.

I hope not -- it's my favorite ravioli. It's been MIA at the two Trader Joe's I frequent, but I haven't asked the staff if that variety has been discontinued. Fingers crossed it's just a stock hiccup.

The frozen multigrain croissants are gone. However, the associate said the status ("making room," or something like that) means they should be replaced by a similar product in the future. I hope so, as they were tasty and didn't require the overnight proofing time that their other frozen varieties do.

The Trader Joes brand frozen veggie breakfast sausage patties. The ingredient list was much less scary than the Morning Star Farm version. Sad to see TJs version go :(

We bought the pre-cooked corned beef for the second year in a row. Lean, flavorful, and nitrate/nitrite free. Definite yay.

I'll have to try the canned minestrone soup. Sounds like a winner!

I love the canned lentil soup. It's flavorful, hearty, and perfect cold-weather food. I typically add lemon juice, hot sauce, feta, and sliced avocado.

Yay: Gone Bananas, one bite at a time. What's not to like about dark chocolate covered banana slices? Nice sweet treat that feels pseudo-healthy. The 4 slice/130 calorie serving size is portioned just right to satisfy my sweet tooth.

Has anyone tried the veggie, grain, and cheese stuffed poblano peppers in the refrigerated prepared meals section? They caught my eye but not enough to purchase them...yet.

The frozen dried persimmons have grown on me, making them a belated yay. Defrosting made a big difference. Very satisfying when I'm craving something sweet. Despite the $3.99 price tag I couldn't resist picking up a second box after the first was gone.

Yays: 10 minute farro and barley; canned lentil soup; frozen sablefish/black cod.

OK: Frozen dried persimmons. Sounded delicious, and I love persimmons, but I the flavor was a bit lack-luster. I tried the persimmon straight from the freezer, as recommended on the box. Maybe I'll defrost my next one a bit as the frozen/chewy combo was a bit odd. A pack of 4 cost $3.99; I won't be in a hurry to spend $1/persimmon again after this pack is gone.

Question: January's thread had numerous yays for the "Honey Tangerine" juice. I've spotted fresh Tangerine juice in the refrigerated fresh juice section, but nothing called "Honey Tangerine." Am I looking in the wrong spot? Did I miss my chance?

I almost didn't buy the Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli based on your nay, but I'm glad I gave them a shot. We balanced the sweetness of the ravioli by topping them with olive oil, parm, red pepper flakes, black pepper, and sea salt. I didn't find the filling overly sweet (I think there are 7g sugar per serving), but it was spiced with pumpkin pie-esque flavors. We had them for dinner twice last week :-)

Disclaimer: I love most things pumpkin

The spinach pizza is on weekly rotation in our house. I believe it, and the pesto pizza, are repackaged TJ versions of the Amy's brand. I am not as convinced that the TJ roasted vegetable pizza (no cheese) is a simple repackage of Amy's: while I love the Amy's version, the TJ's pie just didn't taste the same. Maybe I have to give it another try to compare.

We also enjoy the Pizza Parlano, TJ's version of a supreme pizza. It's on the salty side, but I am not sensitive to salt so it's not an issue for me :-)

I regularly cook the Trader Joe's Brown Rice Medley, and our household enjoys this mix. I like the different textures and grain varieties: it creates a lively side dish. I think the medley's identity crisis is an asset, not a detriment ;-)

I also use the frozen brown rice medley that Dommy referenced -- perfect for a quick side dish.

You Snooze - You Lose: Antojitos Carmen - gone from 2510 E Cesar Chavez

Yep, same thing happened to me. Went Sunday night only to find the space closed. When my boyfriend called the line, the person on the other end said the restaurant has a new name and new hours. Bummer.

LA Neighborhood of the Month (Sep 2012) - East LA/Boyle Heights

We attempted to go to Antojitos Carmen for the first time Sunday night, but they were closed. My boyfriend called, and someone answered and said the restaurant has new hours (now closes at 6pm on Sunday) and a new name?! Anyone know about the restaurant being gone/under new ownership? There's a Yelp comment saying the restaurant was sold, but the Antojitos Carmen website is still up.
