Mexican Restaurants in Bergen County
i'm in total agreement with Bosmer on this one...it's a winner!
German Restaurants in NJ
Pilsner Haus had the best mussels I've ever had EVER. I love this place and my only regret is that it isn't closer to where I live.
Mom's Day Present - Tour of Jersey's Farmers Markets and Ethnic Supermarkets

If your mom's into gardening & food, I just saw this Asian plant center on Ruth Reichel's new PBS show. It's in Riveredge and I can't wait to go there myself

Baked Farmer's Cheese where to buy???
I saw it at the fairway in Paramus last week...never heard of it, and frankly i didn't think it sound appealing, but yes, it's there
I'm a newbie gardener in N.J. (7a, not a parkway exit but our zone)
i gotta question about lasagna composting/sheet mulching.....i always hear about it being done in the fall, not the spring. I'd like to give it a go in beds i'm planting seedingings in to reduce weed growth... i'm thinking of doing this on already established beds as a way of adding organic material & limiting weeds
1. how many layers of newspaper do you lay down?
2. how much compost do you heap on top?
3. do you just cut a hole in the newspaper & plant in the plant?
4. what exactly is a fish emulsion??
5. I'm planting potatoes soon & thinking of using this method- your thoughts?
Sorry for doing an uber brain pick, but thanks so much!
Red Wolfe Inn, Belvidere
This place is my dude's #1 steak place- we'll drive the 1+ hours from Bergen county to get there. Very good steaks using great cuts of meat and always done perfectly. Cosy atmosphere and great beer selection. Not overly pricey.

Weehawken or thereabouts
we went to the Pilsner Haus Biergarten in Hoboken, less than a mile a way from my friend's hotel...AWESOME....we had the BEST mussels I've ever eaten, a fabulous steak tartar, giant pretzel & and various wursts...Great vibe.. I'm kinda in love with this place & my only regret is it's distance from my house in Bergen county. I heartily recommend this place & will be back myself

Weehawken or thereabouts
I've got a friend coming in from out of state staying in Weehawken this week & I'd like to take him out somewhere nearby although I'm not familiar with the area at all, Not into crossing the river. Open to all sorts of eats, particularly ethnic, reasonably priced, BYOB or not.
Looking for all you can drink brunch

both are greek/Mediterranean grocery stores on Kinderkamack. Arek was somewhat destroyed by a fire started 2 doors down...Hope he opens again, as he's got the freshest pita/cheese/phyllo this side of patterson.
Saratoga Springs November 2-5
ok, so maybe a bit $$, but I sorta love these places (And I do think Beekman's pretty hip- cool vibe, neat local art, good local products....)
How's the food at the wine bar now with a new chef...we'll be coming into town this weekend ourselves & planning a visit
Saratoga Springs November 2-5
Beekman Street Bistro is one of the restaurants my dude and I hit up every time we go to Saratoga. They've got an amazing tasting menu, uber-local meat/produce, and a hip atmosphere.
Also- surprised that there's been no mention of the Wine Bar. I kinda adore this place & wish it was in my hometown.

I finally got through & was able to secure a reservation...she said they don't have a fax line & it's a Verizon issue that they've had for the last year...(grrrr- that's gotta hurt them) Hope it's good (it's an anniversary dinner) & i will report back
is Lorena's in Maplewood closed?
I've been trying to make a reservation for the last 3 days, though I can only get the fax machine to pick up. I've emailed but no response. Doe anyone know its status?

Lula's Latin Cuisine- Dumont, NJ (Bergen County)
My dude and I at there a couple of days ago. We wanted to sample their offerings, so we ordered way too much food, all of which we enjoyed. We split a cuban sandwich and I gotta say, as much as I love El Caney in Bergenfield, this one takes the best cuban sandwich award. Awesome.
I had the mofungo with chicken. I'd never had it before, but it was something I had been wanting to try since seeing Anthony Bourdain's tour of Puerto Rico. Mofunogo was supertasty (how can you go wrong with fried, then smashed & seasoned plantain?) and chicken was great. My dude had the oxtail- very good- along with yellowrice and blackbeans. Also very good (though in a head-to-head, I think El Caney's win the black bean award). We shared a plate of tostones- good, but I wasn't super crazy about the mojito sauce served with them.
Lula's makes its own hot sauce- good stuff- very hot!
All that food, and I think our bill was less than $30 (plus we had lunch for the next day). We'll be back.

Decent Lunch in South Hackensack?
Pollo Mario (or Mario's Pollo?) - downtown hackensack by the courthouse- does some amazing columbian chicken/beans/chiccarrone. Great prices as well
I've heard good things about the Indian restaurant further down main, though I have yet to sample their wares.
Green Papaya in Riveredge can be decent, esp. their tofu dishes

Moving to Demarest (near Tenafly) from NYC Need lots of advice
Agree w/Picnic chef on Tenafly's farmers market (and have to add a good word for her restaurant Picnic in Fairlawn...Very good stuff comes out of that kitchen & it's only about 20 minutes away)
Moving to Demarest (near Tenafly) from NYC Need lots of advice
wow, doxy!! while it's no manhattan, there are some decent eats around town, assuming you like ethnic eats (and have a car)
Tenafly: Simply Vietnamese- review just ran in the nytimes last week. Decent, though not the best vietnamese (and more expensive than most viet. places i'm used to)
Axia Taverna in Tenafly;
Nisi Estuario in Englewood: I'd say both are some of the best upscale greek you'll get anywhere (even compared to those in the city (e.g. molyvos). Both are pricey and both are not BYO, definitely worth it
El Caney: Bergenfield- Cuban take out...Very good, very cheap and very busy
Marios's Pollo: Hackensack- Columbian-Fantastic roasted chix, beans, chiccarone, ect
Amici's: Bergenfield- GREAT pizza and old school sunday sauce (BYO)
La Maravillas De Tulcingo : Englewood- Authentic (no, really) mexican. BYO
Tommy fox's: Bergenfield - makes a hell of a burger
Unidentified Flying Chicken- tenafly & Mad for Chicken-Bergenfield: Korean Fried Chicken
That's my list thus far- Welcome to BC!

wings
K-style wings REALLY ARE the most amazing style i've ever had. I'm partial to UFC in Tenafly (i like the sauces and pickled diakon they give you), but my dude likes Mad for Chicken in Bergenfield. We are blessed with a multitude of K-fried chix here in N, Jersey that it seems like a shame to go back to "regular" style buffalo wings.
Attention Pastry Chefs: Rheinland Bakery (Mt. Clemens, MI) needs a baker!!
Don't think so :) ...however, I believe that Steve and Corinna are the main movers of the bakery being a German bakery (emphasis on German) and not just another bake shop. After tooling around for quite some time, they were able to procure the special flours they'd need to make said breads (I spoke with Corinna about this- apparently German flours have a certain percentage of potash/protein/ect. that's hard, if not impossible to replicate with American grains).
Again, I beg you to pass this chowmessage onto your Baking and Pastry chef friends (even out of the area)...Bakeries like this do not come around often.
Attention Pastry Chefs: Rheinland Bakery (Mt. Clemens, MI) needs a baker!!
Got this message from Steve, the owner of the Amazing Rheinland bakery in Clinton township, MI (Macomb County)....They are planning on shutting down operations due to the lack of someone to step in as chief baker...
"Steve here from Rheinland Baked Goods. My wife, Corinna, and I just wanted to thank you for all your kind words pertaining to our bakery. We really try to sell our stuff as fresh as possible. Unfortunately, our baker received a better offer, and since my wife and I are not bakers, we are forced to close the bakery. We hope to still do some farmers markets, but I can't even say when that would be. If you know of a baker who needs a job please send him our way. "

Please please please pass this message along to all your professional pastry friends...this place much too good to lose, Detroit!
New Mexican in Englewood- La Maravillas de Tulcingo 3- anybody been?
I think we were on PARALLEL wavelengths yesterday, as my dude and I tried the restaurant yesterday as well (it was part of our explore Englewood day: hit theFarmers market, then walk over to the restaurant)...
I, like Tongo, was quite impressed with the place....Very clean, well lit, and with a family atmosphere...I'm used to the likes of Mi Pueblo in Bergenfield for authentic Mexican, but would prefer taking newcomers to REAL mexican food to this place (not to mention that I think Mi Pueblo has gone downhill in a major way since 2007, but I digress....)
First impressions:
I was immediately wowed by the fact that the menu goes beyond "la favourites" and really gets into so regional antojitos that I"m so fond of....namely:
1. huaraches- large, bean stuffed masa topped with sauce, protein, crema & cheese
-My dude had this one...masa was good, but pork was just "meh"...I'd try it again, though with another protien
2. Tlacoyos - I had to look this one up on my Iphone...Kinda like a bean stuffed Huarache, but smaller (2 per order) and tastier with green & red sauces + steak..
-I ordered this one and am in love...will be trying the kind with chicharone next time
He had Agua de Jamica (Hibiscus Juice?) and I had Horchata...both were fresh made and perfect...
Can't wait to try other things on the menu (authentic Gorditas????) and will certainly be back to sample their tamales.
Thanks for the headsup on this one, Tongo...Looks like Bergen County FINALLy has got good mexican and on the books.
