I'm with you on Modern. It was great pizza and no waiting for a booth. Walked in and sat down. The place was crowded and the takeout was booming but the turnover was fast so the time I went, there was not waiting.
I did Pepe's and waited outside for over 30 mins. Not doing that again.
Nanking - JH's
I went last night for dinner. We ordered from both sides of the menu and thought everything was delish. I am definitely going back to try other dishes.
Indian Birthday Dinner in Jackson Heights
I went to Nanking Express last night. It was great food. Not large inside at all. Very sweet wait staff. Menu is half Chinese/Thai and half Indian. Delicious. On it's on 37th Ave. bet. 73/72 Strs.
new sushi coming to Jackson Heights
Yep, it opened today. HURRAY. I went with 2 friends. We ordered a TON of food: edamame, yakitori, teriyaki-chicken & beef, sushi (salmon, tuna, yellowtail & shrimp) and special rolls (king crab w/avocado and spicy tuna), veggie tempura, lots of beer and the grand total: $81.00 with left overs. WOW. Fish was fresh and tender. Chicken and beef was large portions and also tender (and not fatty which is a plus IMHO). Service was nice and friendly. Place was attractive looking (lots of wood that's either fake or highly varnished, red stained wood floors, booths and tables and chairs plus a sushi counter. SOOO HAPPY. And I wasn't unhappy with Happy Kitchen. They are a little more pricey but they serve larger pieces of sushi. Although Tomo's teriyaki portions were larger. It's just nice to have another option closer to my apartment. BTW, for the Grand Opening sushi is $1.00 per piece. COOL.
new sushi coming to Jackson Heights
I like Happy Kitchen although I usually get the teriyaki platters and only occasionally order sushi. But I've never found their sushi to be grocery store quality. The Tomo over by Queens Center mall doesn't look like much. I have a feeling it won't be better than Happy Kitchen. Hope I'm wrong since it's much closer to me living on 86th Street.
Five Guys burgers coming to Park Slope
I've only gone to the Five Guys in College Point, Queens but it's got great burgers and fries. And I like the looks of it inside with the boxes and buckets of free peanuts. Even though it's become a chain it doesn't have that vibe. It's casual inside but mostly it's about the burgers. You guys are so lucky. I'd love one closer or right in Jackson Heights.
Help an Englishman?
Georgia Diner in Elmhurst, Queens is probably the best diner in the boroughs. And it's open 24 hours.
De Mole in Woodside, Queens for Mexican.
Chinese in Chinatown: Hop Kee at 21 Mott or Shanghai Cafe at 100 Mott
Destination Non-Traditional Birthday Restaurant in Outer Boroughs
I was going to suggest Sapori also. It's got this oddly romantic vibe: it's small and pretty but also unusual because the tables are set up in the middle of an Italian deli. Plus on most nights, they have live music. I've been there on the nights when there's a guy playing old standards on the piano. And the food is good. They're moderately priced.

Sripraphai is romantic and lovely only in the back garden. Inside is like sitting at Ikea.
JH Restaurants to Impress?
Most people coming from outside JHs like going to the Jackson Diner. It's one of the best know Indian restaurants, good food (assuming you all like Indian food) and fun looking inside. And that part of town is very unique. Plus it's one block from the Roosevelt Ave. train station which makes it real convenient. If you like Thai food, there's Arunee Thai on 79th St. right off of Roosevelt. Both these places are moderately priced, have beers and are different looking inside. Do you and your friends like spicy foods? Cuz these are spicier than American food.
