College Park/Orlando Mexican

My husband and I tried Emilianoz for lunch one day right after it opened and it was terrible. We had such high hopes upon entering the restaurant but the food quality was very poor. I thought maybe we hit it on a bad day but we've heard from friends that have had the same experience. The only edible thing was the free salsa on the table. It really is a shame because you can tell the owners put a lot of love into that space.

Pre-theatre recommendations

We are going to see "In The Heights" on Tues 8/5 @ the Richard Rogers Theatre. We are looking for recommendations for either Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian or Korean restaurants in the area. We are open to most price ranges.

Also, we'd like to go someplace after the theatre for dessert and drinks. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

We only have 1 night in NYC and want to experience cuisines that are not readily available here in Orlando. We are staying at the Hilton in Times Square but we're happy to venture away from the area for great food.

Thanks!

Orchid in Winter Park

Has anyone been recently? We've been meaning to try it out and might make it over there this weekend. I'd love to know if it's worth a visit.

Thanks!

Ft Myers Beach Recomendations

My parents live there and they just told me about The Sandy Butler on the way down to the beach. It's a restaurant & gourmet shop...she said it has many take away items as well.

If you venture away from the beach into Ft Myers, the Cantina Laredo is a great mexican restaurant. It's next to the Bell Tower Mall on 41.

Both places are kid friendly.

Orlando/Lake Mary Catering?

Thanks...I've done Bubbalou's a couple of times and they were fantastic, but I was looking for something a little nicer than BBQ for this get-together. I'll look into the places you recommended.

Anyone ordered from Puff n Stuff catering or Enzo's on the Lake? Any restaurants that do catering that you would recommend?

Orlando/Lake Mary Catering?

I'm looking for someplace that will cater a cocktail party for about 30 people at our home here in Lake Mary. I'm not looking for anything extravagant or too fancy and I don't need wait staff or anything like that--I just need good food.

Any suggestions?

Help me choose from these Orlando Restaurants

I definitely do not recommend Manuel's on the 28th. It used to be amazing but has seriously slipped in their food quality. We dined there in December and it was awful--every single item we ordered was disappointing. This is one restaurant that is past it's prime.

I will agree though that the atmosphere on the 28th floor is amazing.

Spice Modern Steakhouse - Central FL

That's because the food at fishhbones is not-so-great. My husband and I will only go there for drinks now because we've just been disappointed too many times. The atmosphere is nice--especially the back patio. Most our friends will only go there for drinks or appetizers too--it's just not worth the $$. When they first opened you couldn't get a seat in the place for weeks...now you can pretty much walk-in whenever you like.

I have to say that there's just not many stand-outs here in Lake Mary. The restaurants in Colonial Town Park & Park Place are good--but not great by any means. I think they have a great location in Lake Mary but they just aren't good enough to keep people coming back for more. Colonial Town Park & Park Place are actually just around the corner from most of the huge neighborhoods....and most neighborhoods have been sold out for a while now so there's not much construction left to be done here in LM. It's the quality of food that's an issue here, IMO.

If I want a good meal--I head to winter park or downtown. I wish I didn't have to, though.

Spice Modern Steakhouse - Central FL

I live in Lake Mary and dined at their spice location once. Everyone in our party was VERY disappointed. I don't remember all the specifics, but I remember leaving and thinking I would never go back again. Most people I know that live here in Lake Mary have had bad experiences as well and most will never go back. I went to their back patio for drinks one night and was even disappointed with that--they charged $15.00 per martini and they certainly weren't good enough to warrant that price tag!

The shame of it is that they closed Manny's to open the Lake Mary Spice (according to Bob Mervine a while back). I loved Manny's & had a fantastic meal there every time I went. I'm not sure why they didn't just move Manny's to the Spice location??!!

Any Sushi Fans? Orlando

Shari Sushi in Thorton Park is fantastic.

Amura is another favorite--they have a downtown Orlando location but I've only been to the Lake Mary location.

Sea World

Yes, that's exactly what the restaurant was like. All the tables face a huge aquarium that has sharks and fish swimming around while you dine. That part of the restaurant is extremely nice. I was just giving feedback on the food quality. It's worth the visit for the atmosphere. Just don't expect a "fine dining" experience. I think entrees were $20-25 per person.

Sea World

We've dined there once. As far as quality--it's about as good as a applebee's or chili's. It's probably the best dining choice in the park but don't expect to be blown away by the food quality. The atmosphere is nice and it's great to sit down and relax with a glass of wine after trudging through the park all day.

Orlando - Valentine's day suggestions

I highly discourage going to Manuel's on the 28th. My husband and I had dinner there right before New Year's and the food was average, at best. It does occupy a beautiful space and the atmosphere is very romantic...but the food was not worth the money at all. We had pistachio crusted scallops as a starter that were flavorless...the lobster bisque was fishy (we used to love their bisque!)...and both of our ahi-tuna entree's, which the server RAVED about, came out well-done & dry.

I complained to our server who gave me a bit of an attitude and then the manager came over. He said he agreed that my tuna was overcooked, tried to give me a free dessert (which I did not want) and then only refunded HALF of my entree. It is clear this restaurant is no longer at it's peak and is seriously lacking in quality. We have dined there many times since we moved to Orlando 8 years ago and always left extremely satisfied...but no more. My husband said he never wants to go back ever again.

I suggest finding something other than Manuel's for your valentines day or any other special occassion.

Looking for delicious food in the Orlando area

Primo at the Marriott (which is right next to the Ritz) would be an excellent choice for Friday night. There are several reviews about Primo on this board if you do a quick search. Also, downtown Winter Park has some great choices--Bosphorous, Luma, Cafe De France, Park Plaza Gardens...

The good word is definitely out because the place was mobbed on Friday night.

You're very right--it was worth the wait!

The Ravenous Pig in Winter Park -- great new place!

We dined at "The Pig" on Friday night and had an amazing dinner. We had an unusually long wait that night--we had a 9PM reservation but weren't seated until after 10PM. Fortunately the manager was extremely kind and apologetic and took great care of us. If it wasn't for him, we probably would have walked out and written the place off (which my husband wanted to do several times but I forced him to wait it out. The reviews had been too good to walk away!). We were glad we stuck it out--the food was fantastic. We had the lobster taco and the lamb mezze to start...we shared the hunter salad...I had the flat iron steak and my husband had the scallops...and for dessert we had the piggy tails. Everything was amazing. Our server was even kind enough to bring me a side of the tomato tart (since the rib eye was sold out). I was worried the place might not live up to the chowhound hype--but it did!

We will definitely go back--just a little bit earlier next time. We were pretty annoyed that night about our wait, but I can think of worse things than sitting at the bar having a drink with my husband. Like I said, the manager took good care of us and tried to make right of an unfortunate situation. He even went out of his way to approach us as we left to apologize again. He really is a huge asset to the restaurant and knows how to keep his customers happy.

Oh, a couple of things to note--the rib eye is now an entree for one. Our server said it was so popular that they decided to make it a single serving entree. Also, on Saturday morning I got a mass email from the restaurant saying that they were no longer taking reservations--it is walk-in only from now on. I'm guessing we weren't the only ones waiting over an hour for a table on Friday night!

I highly suggest giving this place a try!

Orlando area: ethnic gems and a fancy place?

For your fancy dinner---at the JW Marriott there is Primo, which is excellent. . There is also Norman's at the Ritz (which is right next door to the Marriott). Both are perfect places for an expense account dinner. If you do a quick search on this board you will find much more info on both of these restaurants. There were several discussions on them recently.

Citrus Restaurant (Orlando)

We tried Citrus this past Saturday and our experience was decent. We thought the restaurant was beautiful and the food was good, not outstanding.

We were seated in a small hallway type area to the right of the hostess stand and the noise level was normal where we were. My only complaint was that we were squished into our table, but we found out later that it wasn't the restaurant's fault, it was because the table behind decided to push their table into ours before we arrived to give themselves more leg room (which they had plenty of to begin with) so we were cramped. The waitress apologized for this after the other table left and moved their table back to where it was supposed to be.

As for the food, we shared the steak flatbread and the tuna tartare with the table. Both were decent, although the sauce on the flatbread was overpowering and I never tasted the steak. I had the citrus salad and the bacon wrapped scallops and my husband had the exact same thing. Both were good but neither were outstanding. What I really loved was the banana cheesecake dessert. I would go back again just for this. It was delicious.

We dined with another couple, whom we don't know very well. The wife (who apparently isn't much of a hound) ordered the wedge salad and the filet mignon--butterflied and well-done! UGH. It just sounded disgusting...but that was entirely her fault. She raved about how fantastic her steak was (one of the best in her life) and that the wedge was THE best she's ever had. I can't say as though I trust her judgement. I really obsessed about her entree all weekend--it really disturbed me. I had heard of people who ate like this but I never really knew anyone that did. Anway, back to the meal...The huband ordered the caprese salad and the strip steak with chimmichurri sauce and said they were both great. They shared the "cup" cake for dessert but said it was mostly whipped cream and just a tiny bit of cake.

I should mention that our waitress was fantastic and very attentive.

We will go back again, but probably not for a while.

favorite little gem winery in Sonoma?

I have to second this recommendation. The Dry Creek Road area was our favorite part of our trip to Sonoma.

We had an excellent lunch at Ravenous (which someone above mentioned).

If anyone is looking for a place to stay in Sonoma--we stayed at the Gaige House Inn on three separate occasions and it was amazing every time.

Orlando - Hanamizuki or Amura? please help!

I have to agree with Bob--Shari Sushi is MUCH better than Amura. I've never been to Ichiban or Hanamizuki so I can't comment on either of them.

I really like Amura, but SS is definitely a few notches above.

Customizable Dessert in Orlando?

I live in Lake Mary...the choices here would be Publix (which makes an amazingly good cake for a grocery store-the buttercream frosting is delicious) and Coldstone for an ice cream cake. Publix prices are pretty reasonable.

South Beach Trendy - Where to Be?

Ok, I tried to make reservations at Social, but they only have 8PM or 11PM. So now we're between Vix, O Asian Grill and Table 8. What is best for a Sat night (our only night in South Beach)? Is there anything else I should look into that hasn't been suggested? I saw Nobu on the list but haven't looked into it. Should I?

Thanks for your help!! The girls put all the responsibility on me to pick a place and its a lot of pressure!! Especially since I've never been to south beach before.
